Building for the future

Everyone is bitching about Bobby going with KAY and not Fife. Perhaps he accepted this years position and decided to use this game to start to “develop “ a QB for the future instead of depending on the transfer portal? Thats been his downfall…inability to develop a consistent QB! Who knows… instead of depending on the portal maybe this could work?

I hope it’s that. What I have an assumption that it is is that Bobby and Fife hate eachother. Bobby knows Fife is leaving. And Bobby is a salty asshole so no way in hell is he giving Fife another game to play.

Specially over AhYat who I assume is much more passive and accepting of coaching from this staff.

It wouldn’t have mattered either way tho.

I suspect Fife is all but gone. I’m also just not sure AhYat is the answer either.
It really seems this coaching staff has a hard time recruiting QB’s that stick. I mean look at some of the QB’s that EWU has recruited in the past decade. Absolute ballers.
Look over the hill and Tommy M.
McCoy when he was at Idaho. This kid at SDSU.
Granted I know not all Freshman can start right away.
But we have not been able to have one QB play 3 years it seems for what seems like forever.
I think its next to impossible to expect to get a portal QB that can take you all the way in what could be there one and only year.
I hope I am proven wrong and AhYat can light it up next year. But just not sold on that.
All I know is a lot of improvements are needed all around the Griz right now.
Hopefully we don’t loose a bunch of guys to the portal. But I fear we do and next year is even more of a struggle.

If that was the case Hauck failed again. Ah Yat should have played the entire season, period. Getting the equivalent of 3 or 4 games total this season is pathetic.

Hauck has no credibility when it comes to the QB position. He had Ochs and passed that talent away too.

And good luck convincing any Transfer with a pulse to come in and compete after how they handled the QB situation this season. Hell we may have trouble keeping Flowers and Huot at this point, why would they stick around when they are pushing so hard for AhYat to be the guy.

I hope and want to be proven wrong but it's the only thing I can think of why the coaching staff did what they did this season.

If his goal for the season was to develop Ah Yat to be the guy you are absolutely correct. However, my days of believing Bobby is playing 3D chess while everyone else is playing checkers have been over for a long time

Ah Yat is Daniel Britt with a legacy name. That is all. We ain’t winning shit with him at QB. Now OR in the future.

Edit: in fact, Ah Yat stats are measurably WORSE than Britt in every category. But there’s that legacy name thingy…

Explain please. Ochs was damn good with Hauck as coach. I'd happily take Ochs like qb production here.

Next spring will bring an open competition for QB, something too many qb's lately wouldn't accept. I want the QB with confidence he will win the job staying. You can have the whiners.

Next spring, next fall, next year. Anyone else tired of 'next?' Building a program is one thing, but progress is required. This was Bobby's 7th year. 'His guys' have come and gone, and gone, and gone.
Gawd, I hate to say it, as I like Bobby, but maybe, after the QB and other problems, is Bobby the problem?

I don’t mean this as a complete endorsement of KAY, but more as a little bit of a reality check. Some Griz fans seem to have expected him to have come in and light the world on fire from the beginning of the season. He didn’t, but he showed some flashes of talent that are very intriguing to many Griz fans. The reality check, though, is this—he is just a redshirt freshman. Did Dave Dickenson or KAY's father light it up as freshmen for the Griz? No, neither of them played more than a few snaps as freshmen. Yet many expect KAY to come in and be all world. There are a few quarterbacks who can come in as true freshman, or redshirt freshman, and light it up, but that number is pretty low. Personally, I think KAY is still a work in progress, and may grow into something very good with more training, study in the off-season, and reps. Just a thought. And having an offensive line that doesn’t have him running for his life on virtually every play would also be nice.

People love to look at NDSU, SDSU, and say, "We should be able to have quarterbacks like what they have year after year". Well... NDSU and SDSU can actually develop quarterbacks because they have OLines that protect their quarterback and do a damn-good job at giving their QBs time to develop.

We need a strong O-line at Montana like we used to have. Everything else will then likely fall into place.

Brian actually got a lot of reps as a true frosh, because back then the Griz were such a high scoring team Dave was usually pulled before the 4th qtr. The Hauck strategy of getting up by 10, playing field position and grinding out the clock doesn’t allow backup qb’s to get meaningful in-game reps.

Well, Brian got a few reps, as you note because the Griz often got up big early, but Paffhausen was the first backup off the bench in '95, so he got more (he was 31-45 [68.9%] with 0 TDs and 2 INTs; Ah Yat was only 11-27 [40.7%] with 0 TDs and 2 INTs). Did we know BAY was a future hall-of-fame member based on his freshman performance? Not by a long shot.
