Whitefish/Kalispell, Flathead Lake, Missoula, Big Sky/YC, Red Lodge, Paradise Valley, Ennis/Jefferson, etc. As well as Bozeman.

Seriously, when is the last time you spent a substantial amount of time there? Traffic is ridiculous. Lines everywhere. Cost of housing is absolutely atrocious. Cold and expensive to recreate. Beautiful surroundings? Yep has them in spades. Culture for a city. Terrible. I respectfully disagree. Especially when you consider a coaches salary. It’s called bozangeles for a reason. I don’t blame any coach for leaving to advance their career. I just don’t see Bozeman as the destination you claim it is.
Weren’t cat fans saying Daly was going to ascend as the head coach when Coach Sixx took his rightful place as the WSU Head Coach? Wasn’t Daly rumored to bleed blue and yellow?

I know a lot of people that do not like Bozeman because the housing costs are sky high, including apartments. It is no wonder Bozeman's homeless population is surging.
And while it may not be the only reason, the high cost of living in Boz Angeles plays a role in the exit of so many coaches from MSU--tough to live there on what an assistant coach @ MSU makes !!!
And Coach Vigen's cupboards are lookin' pretty barren and empty for next year !!!

They had some pretty high standards set by the previous group but you know what they say in Bozeman, their backups are better then their starters.

You guys are all pretty much right. Bozeman is probably the biggest destination city in the state. Which is making it shittier and shittier.
I've been here for 40 years. There are still many great things about the area. But I find myself disliking it more and more each day. Housing is ridiculous. traffic is worse. Downtown has lost it's character. Hundreds of dog parks but one 60yr old bowling alley. Nothing for kids to do in this town. One movie theatre. Can't even make a tee time at a public course unless you do it a week ahead of time. Then can expect a nice 6 hour round. I could go on and on.
Funny thing I grew up hating Billings. Thought it was gross. Now I'm there for work as much or more than Bozeman and it's so much better than Bozeman in so many ways. It may not be a "destination" city like Bozeman; but it has so much more to offer the regular person and not just those with 7-figure bank accounts. I'm currently looking to winter outside of the state but the more my wife and I talk, the more I think our primary house will be in Billings and not Bozeman. I'll drive over for Cat games and that will be enough for me!
I now live in Missoula again and love it. Grew up in the eastern side and have lived all over the state. I do think Billings gets a bad rap. A lot of areas that people think are shady like Montana Ave are really pretty fun areas now. I'm the wrong one to ask because I just stopped going because of that reason. Everywhere you go, places are packed. Bars, restaurants, hiking trails, rivers, grocery stores, you name it. But I haven't stepped foot in our one crappy theatre in probably 15 years!
The only thing that would keep Great Falls out of the #7 spot is Howards Pizza
Damn. Sounds like AMC needs to get in there with a new one.
I have only been over to Bozeman a couple of times in the last 10 years, but that is generally how it has felt. I've had some really good meals (thankfully avoiding the Murder Sushi), and perfectly pleasant nights, but the parking absolutely sucked and it felt like everything took forever.
I get the perspective that Bozeman is the most desirable place to move to for whatever reasons, but gosh, I'll take my less desirable Missoula with our still thankfully short wait times and weird local vibe that exists if you get even slightly under the surface. I know we are next to undergo the changes Bozeman has experienced (and to a lesser extent the Flathead), but I'm really going to try to enjoy this time before that hits.
And, as an added bonus at that price point for both locations, it will come with some "fixer upper" type repairs!

In my 48 years on Montana I have lived in 4 of these cities and close to the other 3. Ranked in order, worst to first.
7. Bozeman. For all the reasons listed above and because it has the worst weather of them all. The fact it is where MSU is located would sink it lower but that doesn't figure into my rankings. It really is the land of confusion.
6. Great Falls. Wind and weirdos. Nothing special about anything there. Lost Eddy's Supper Club and that was it.
5. Billings. Crime capital of Montana and getting worse every day. City has been horribly mismanaged for decades. Lost the Windmill and that was unforgiveable. Sorry, but the only thing the new Windmill has in common with the old supper club is the name. Great Breweries but not enough for a better rating.
4. Helena. Boring, cliquish, snobbish where people who want to be important go to pretend they are important. Having Carroll College and the Marysville House keeps this town at .500.
3. Kalispell. An almost town. Drab winters, horrible traffic patterns. Has some redeeming breweries and boutique eateries but its almost Whitefish, almost on Flathead lake, almost the gateway to Glacier.
2. Butte. The town, the people, the atmosphere, and Lydia's. The ability to hit -50 is the only thing holding it back from #1.
1. Missoula Three rivers, best breweries, The Ranch Club, Missoula Super Club (this one is new, folks) Mo Club, even El Cazador. Fantastic downtown night life across all spectrums. So much close to walking distance to offset the horrific traffic, but even then, ultimately, worth the long waits at lights.
This is so, so well put. I had never been able to express this thought clearly enough, but you nailed it.
Billings is the best town in Montana to live in as adult. Best economy and more affordable than the other major cities. Art and food scene is also the best in the state.
Two things that would make Billings #1 by an even wider margin.
1. More walkable downtown
2. Residents more willing to spend money. We need a better rec center.
We did just get a Lava Island. It is awesome for the kids.
