BSC taking bids for neutral site championships

The regular season still is important in regard to seeding for the tournament. It sucks that the conference winner doesn't get the automatic bid to the big dance, but the next best thing is to lock in the top 2 seeds, thus only having to play two games to reach the big dance. I too would prefer the regular-season champion be the one to host the tournament.

Then again... teams like Sac State or Portland State would have the opportunity to host. I remember when Northern Colorado hosted in their cute little gym a few years back...
AJ leading the Griz to a win over Weber at Weber on national tv was a great moment for the BSC...Sac State hosting Eastern Wash in, what resembles, a basement gym at a junior high, will not be.

I understand why you would be embarrassed.......YOU WON'T BE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.....and by the way....the tournament, if Sac wins the conference (big IF), WILL NOT BE PLAYED IN SAC STATE'S HOME GYM......please try to keep up with the times...it gets a little old having to repeat what most fans already know....OUR GYM SUCKS, IT IS TOO LITTLE TO HOLD THE TOURNAMENT IN, THE TOURNAMENT WILL BE HELD ELSEWHERE IF SAC STATE WINS THE REGULAR SEASON.....geesh Hope you guys beat EWU this week, that is what you should be worried about

Like a lot of Griz fans, I was miffed with the officiating in the game the other night....and of course the Sac State gym is insufficient....but I'm starting to find all the Sac State bashing a bit tiresome....

I'm pretty sure the conference will find a good spot for the tourney if Sac State is the regular season champ....

Lots of games left to be played. I guess in the mean time this issue gives something for people to talk about.

Wow, didn't know Kevin Johnson was the mayor of Sacramento. Fun player to watch when he was in the NBA. Hopefully he'll find something better than a ball room for the tournament to be hosted in if you guys do win the regular season title :P

Think there's any hope after a good year by Sac in basketball that you guys might start looking into a bigger arena? Maybe after the best year you guys have had at the D1 level it'd be time to revisit trying to get funding for that.

What about the Kings arena? Is it too big at 17,000 seating capacity? Maybe they could block off upper deck and have everyone sit in the lower bowl? Sac State has one of the largest student enrollments in the BSC at ~30,000. Combine that with the large Sacramento market and a "first time ever" vibe and who knows how much support they could actually get just for their team if the seating was actually available.

I noticed the BSC tourney is scheduled March 12-14 and the Kings play on the East Coast during that time (3/11 @Charlotte, 3/13 @Philadelphia, 3/14 @Washington). Or do they fly back between games and would need to use their own facilities for practice, etc?

Eh, the tourney will probably be in Cheney anyway (since Sac has 5 of the last 7 on the road).

KJ summed it up perfectly: “Oh we’ll find a venue, don’t worry about it. If they do their part, we the City will do ours.”

This is the same guy that bitch slapped Seattle and wrangled deals to get a downtown arena built that ultimately kept the Kings in Sac. Finding a venue to seat about 5k somewhere in Sac (if we can hang on to 1st) would be a Sunday morning stroll for this guy. :coffee:

It's gotta come from private sources. We passed an arena vote in 2004, then an arena vote failed miserably this past fall (would have been over $400 a year fee increase, it never had a chance). With a new president coming on board next fall my hope is that person can actually get something done regarding this issue.

Just out of curiosity, how do folks here feel that the tournament would be received in Billings? Would you consider Billings a "basketball town"? It seems like the arena is way to big for such an event with seating of 10,000+ for basketball. What would you expect the atmosphere to be like?

I feel it would be great there. Quite a few GRIZ fans in Billings and Eastern MT. Many would drive from all over the state to support the GRIZ and the dreaded Cats. Pretty easy for UND, UNC, Weber State, and ISU as well. Then again, does it really matter? Not many fan bases travel well for the BSC tournament no matter where it is at. The only given is, SAC and Portland State on campus facilities are not capable of supporting the tournament.

Pretty much like it is for any BSC game not in Ogden or Missoula:

I would travel to Billings for the tournament. I actually think it would get support there.

It would get a few thousand Montanans, half of whom would leave when either the Griz or the cats were eliminated. If either (and by that I mean the GRIZ) were not in the title game, there'd be an announced crowd of 1600 for the championship, with maybe -- and here I'm being generous -- 1000 of those actually within shouting distance of the building. Let's be honest: people aren't going to BSC games now when they're a 10 minute drive away. They're certainly not going to fly to see one, or drive 7 hours.

The neutral site idea sucks. Yeah, I get the cost savings thing. But to me, that's just another reason to get the eff out of the BSC. If a team can't cobble together a few thousand bucks to fly to Missoula or Ogden or SacTo, they probably shouldn't field a DI BB team. (Or, the BSC can do the right thing and limit the tournament to the top 4 teams, eliminating most of the problems. But then, that would be good for the student athlete and the universities, and wouldn't line the conferences pockets, so we no THAT ain't happening).

I would travel to both Billings or Spokane. Both are excellent venues.

Would you travel to Reno? Or Fargo? Or Sac? Or Portland?

And would you if you weren't a hard core hoop junkie?

Billings probably puts more butts in the seats for HS games than the majority of BSC schools. There would be good crowds if the tourney were held at the Metra, regardless of how Everett feels.

I am a hard core hoop fan. Living 8 hours from Billings, I can say I would probably make that drive if the Sioux were the #1 seed but that is about it. I would probably make the trip to SLC, Denver, or Vegas under the same circumstances. If it must be neutral site, I would think SLC would be the best choice. Major airline hub and proximity to Weber should help attendance. The Billings idea is growing on me, but I honestly prefer the current setup by far.
