For example... UConn last year.. 8-10 in their conference. They didn't win their conference tournament either, yet they got a 9 seed. West Virginia finished 9-9 in conference last year, lost in the first round of their conference tournament and got a 10 seed anyway. Pure bullshit for teams like that to be rewarded with a trip to the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately it'll likely stay that way.
In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see them expand the tournament even more to make more room for at large bids from big conferences, and force more mid-major teams to play in the play-in games.

Reverse those outcomes, MT Jack:
Air Force dumps the Cats 86-72, Utah beats ISU 57-46 (here come the Utes!) and Wyoming beats NCU 69-60 in Greeley. Plus, Southern Utah struggles at home to a 10-pt win over Carroll & Eastern Washington ekes out a 75-70 win over (eek!) 1-4 South Carolina Upstate (???). Portland (losers to the Cats by 18 earlier this week) is pummeling Portland State by 21 at the half.
Ugh.

I am really starting to feel sorry for the GRIZ and Weber State. Here is to hoping rest the Big Sky programs get better soon. It looks like the GRIZ and Weber State may be in a 2 team race again.

It might be even worse than last night's scores indicate...
Sac State, fresh off of a 74-71 "upset" at Utah, gets beat by 11 at home by UC Davis, which had just lost on their own home court (85-83) to Northern Arizona... you know, the team most picked as Big Sky cellar dwellers in the preseason. In truth, the Jacks look like an upper-tier Big Sky team right now.
There's more than one reason why the College Insider poll is giving NO love to the Big Sky Conference.
We'll get an idea of Weber State's and Montana's relative strength after this weekend. The Wildcats travel to face a beatable Utah State squad (ranked 20th in the Mid Major poll, but over-ranked, in my opinion) before heading east for a tough challenge against Dayton (ranked around 85th by Sagarin & Kenpom).
If the Griz can handle San Diego (no pushover) at home, they'll face 13th (CI) ranked BYU and then travel west to face San Francisco, a team that's down a bit this year. Can the Griz win 2 of 3? If so, then...

Right now, Montana -- playing WITHOUT Will Cherry -- looks ok in the Big Sky. But they're probably going to have to win one or more of the games they're expected to lose (BYU and/or South Dakota State) to get any attention from College Insider voters... even those coaches who are familiar with the Griz.
If they do that without WC, I'd expect to see them at least get mentioned in the College Insider poll, particularly when Will returns to action.

I havent read or heard much about Will and his recovery and what they plan to do with him. At what point do they put him on the shelf for the year and bring him back next season? Are we looking at mid or late december for his return?grizzlyjournal said:

GOOD! thats not so bad. I was thinking if it was too late it wouldnt be a horriable idea to hold him out...but maybe im wrong...WOW i cant wait to get a look at these guys sat night! missed the minot game cuz i had some stuff going on but....gunna be nice getting back in there watching the guys get after USDmtgrizrule said:

You know i was in the military and kind of out of the griz hoops loop for the 08-09 season, but i guess i didnt realize this was WC's 5th year...i thought he started as a true freshman in the 09-10 season....Guess ya learn something every day, if he didnt use his redshirt was he on the team in 08-09 but injured?EverettGriz said:

Correct. Will still has his RS to use. I think we're all saying the same thing. Obviously I wasn't real clear in my post, but I stated that it's great that UM still has the flexibility to use his RS. I was simply stating that if he did not still have a RS available, it might put UM in a bind, either to play him at less than 100% or take a chance on getting granted a 6th year (if he sits out this year, next year would only be his 5th year). But -- as I stated -- fortunately it's not an issue, and that's GREAT!

The only way Will Cherry redshirts, is if there are unexpected drawbacks from his injury. He will be ready by conference play, hopefully a few games before then.
