BSC competition

I watched, on tv, EWU give Wash State (PAC 10) a good game.

And I also watched NCU defeat Hawaii (WAC) for the title in Hawaii's invitational tournament. Granted Hawaii was playing without their suspended 7'0" center. The score 52-50 when NCU went on a 19-0 run. Hawaii was falling behind and forcing up horrible looking 3 pt shots. The NCU coach was smart and had went to a zone defense, knowing Hawaii is weak from the outside. Hawaii went full court press, got some steals and started hit their shtos, even 3 pt'ers. They got it to within 2 pts very late, but NCU sealed it at the free throw line. Pretty entertaining game.

Both NCU and Hawaii are predicted to finish in the middle to lower half of their conferences...NCU I think I recall 6th, after having finished 5th last season. But the ESPN announcers, Carter Blackburn (formerly of CSTV) and I forget the other guy's name, kept saying how the BSC now has a new favorite (in NCU). They mentioned Weber and Montana as the favorites, but said that NCU will compete VERY favorably in the BSC. It was mainly the other guy (color commentary), more so than Blackburn.

While NCU is 3-0 and look pretty good, I don't think they will finish 1 or 2 in the BSC. I do think the BSC is a stronger league this year however after seeing some of these lower predicted teams.

Right now, barring injuries here is how I think the BSC will be this year. As I watch more games I will reevaluate this.

Weber State
Montana
UNC
MSU
Portland State
ISU
NAU
EWU
Sac

At this stage I really am only confident of 1 and 2. For me there is not a surefire cellar dwellar and 3 through 9 can go any way.

I do think PSU may not be as good without Bone and Dominguez, would not surprise me to see them drop to 6. ISU and NAU are always middle of the pack. I am confident in UNC being top 4. Montana State is once again unpredictable, but I do think they will have a lot of confidence from the way the ended the year, either MSU or UNC could take the 3rd. I have a feeling PSU will be disappointing this year due to recent years success.

I feel EWU and Sac will be much better this year, but just do not see either making a huge splash in standing, but I will be surprised if we have any conference team win less than 5 conference games, meaning I expect a dog fight this year top to bottom.

I have not seen them play, so you have an advantage on me. I will watch the griz live at denver this thursday, at CSU and UNC. Like I said, I will reevaluate, and part of that is taking the word of other fans. Based on what you think, it is possible for me to elevate ewu to 3 or 4. In basketball, I think the best time to evaluate the BSC is mid December to get a somewhat accurate read on it at least.

I said EWU gave Pac 10 Wash State a good game, and you place them 8th in the BSC :?: Interesting.

Then WAGRIZ echoed your sentiment. Both you have good reputations and come off as intelligent thoughtful posters, so that is enough for me to reconsider my thinking at this stage. Regardless if we agree or not on any one team this year, the best time to evaluate is as conference begins. It is crapshoot before that, being most us cannot watch every team play.

I will be honest, last year I was not one bit impressed by EWU, they just seemed like a football team in basketball gear. They appeared to me last year as a whole as unathletic, and cumbersome or slow. In fact at year's end I thought they overachieved. Any team any sport can change the next year for the better or worse. So far the little we have on them, it appears they may have changed for the better.

We will all see as the season progresses.

I don't know if you should look too much into the EWU-Wazzu game...it's a rivalry game (they're basically neighbors), much like the UM-ISU football game where the Griz came in heavy favorites and ISU had nothing to lose and ended up making it interesting.

UNC is listed as 25th in the Mid-Major top 25 with 99 votes. UM had 6 votes :).

And I'm left wondering how a team that beat a Pac-10 school doesn't even get a vote....

Ok, it is almost January, time to reevaluate the conference. Here is how I rank them now. This conference is going to be a fight this year. However after reevaluating since this thread started, EWU turns out to be struggling after a few encouraging games early.

Montana
UNC
Weber State
MSU
Portland State
NAU
Sac State
Idaho State
EWU

I am confident of the top 4, but not sure of the order. Fairly confident on PSU and NAU. The bottom 3 is up in the air.

Why isn't UM getting ranked in the mid major? Tinkle, vote for your team, man!

Here is my guess with January almost here.

1 of these 3 will host: Montana, UNC (not NCU), Weber State
4/5 seed: MSU, Portland State,
Last team in: NAU or ISU if they can pull their heads out of their arses - 8 seniors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not getting in: Sac State, EWU. I really wish Sac can make it though. Its nice to see them finally doing some good things, its been 5-6 yrs. I think maybe next yr they'll be in.

Did EWU's game at BYU change their opinion of this team? That was an embarrassement to the whole conf. I don't care if BYU is good either.
