ANACONDA — For the first time since the 1980s, Anaconda has not one, but two NCAA Division I basketball commitments.

Brother and sister Tyler and Ali Hurley have announced their verbal commitment to attend the University of Montana’s basketball programs.

Tyler, an explosive 6-foot-7 senior forward, averaged 23 points per game and more than seven rebounds per outing in leading the Anaconda boys to within one game of the Class A state tournament.

Hurley was named to his first All-State squad this year along with being crowned scoring champion and all-conference first team in the Southwestern A.

Tyler was being courted by other college programs, Carroll College among them, but said he knew deep down that playing for Montana has always been his dream.

“I didn’t want to wonder 20 years from now if I could have played Division I,” said Hurley, who stands in eighth place on Anaconda High’s all-time scoring list with 1,061 points. “I have always wanted to play at Montana. I’ve always liked Coach (Wayne) Tinkle and look forward to getting started.” The choice was extra special for Tyler’s high school head coach and ex-Griz Allen Green.

“I was excited to see that Tyler followed his heart and will be playing for Montana,” Green said. “Tyler really expressed himself as a player this year. He’s very impressive off the dribble and has the whole package. He can shoot, he can rebound and he can pass. I can see Tyler playing some big-time minutes for the Griz in the next couple of years.” For Ali Hurley, the soon-to-be senior at Anaconda, her verbal commitment allows her to focus on basketball and leave behind the rigors of the recruiting process.

“I had a lot of great schools and coaches recruiting me and want to thank them for their interest,” said the 6-foot Hurley, who is widely regarded as one on Montana’s finest girls’ basketball recruits. “But my heart lies with the Griz.” See TALENTS, Page B5 Hurley helped lead head coach Maury Cook’s Copperheads to a combined 65-8 record over the past three seasons, compiling three Southwestern A all-conference and Class A All-State awards along the way.

“I’ve attended Griz camps since I was 5 years old,” said Hurley, whose 1,402 career points and 20 points-per-game average has landed her in fifth place on Anaconda’s all-time scoring list. “The coaches have always been fantastic to me and couldn’t imagine playing for anyone else.” Both Grizzly coaches could not comment on the Hurley’s due to NCAA rules, but have expressed relentless interest in both players during recruiting.

Ironically, the last Division I athlete signed from Anaconda was Tyler and Ali’s father, Scott, who in 1983 signed with Montana State University.

It wouild seem that the sibling bond between Tyler and Ali is stronger than ever, especially now that it looks as though they will spend the rest of their basketball careers together.

“My brother and I are very close,” said Ali. “It’s awesome that we will be at Montana together.” ALL-TIME SCORING LIST IN ANACONDA HISTORY Career Points 1. Ed Kalafat 1,614 2. Rob Hurley 1,531 3. Scott Hurley 1,516 4. Wayne Estes 1,440 5. Ali Hurley 1,242 6. Jim Cordial 1,240 7. Cory Huot 1,169 8. Tyler Hurley 1,061 9. John Cheek Jr. 1,158 10. Zach Parks 1,098 11. Clint Rouse 1,040 12. Bob Hurley 1,035 13. Rochi Estes 1,018

Although there is a discrepency in the story about Ali's point total (1,402 in the body of the story and 1,242 in the stats at the bottom) it looks as though she could become the all-time leader in Anaconda bball history. I hope she gets it next season. And I hope both Hurleys have great careers at UM.

1st of all, Welcome aboard Tyler and Ali. I look forward to cheering both on in the near future! :thumb:

On Egriz alone, I learned these 2 are very closely Knit. Ali more than put many here in place when there was so much negativity here about her brother. I applaud  her for that. That could not have been easy for her to do.

As for Tyler, we all know he can score. It is good to hear from him that he made his decision in not wanting to wonder if he could have played 1A ball? That is thinking with foresight. If it is true that he is walking on, that is a sign he is willing to be unselfish, and confident in his abilities.

Both are very talented players, I hope and wish the best for both here. Ali go get that state title now that the decision is made! I have no ties whatsoever to Anaconda, but will be pulling for the girls to win the title, knowing I am cheering for a LG!

BTW, how many other people told ALI recenty they hoped we get to see her play for the LG. She was score keeping at an AAU tourney at Sentinel over a month ago. I briefly spoke to her, asked her how the recruiting was going. I could tell she was enjoying the process, but knew it was a difficult decision. I wished her luck, and jokingly ended with "FWIW, I would like to see you wearing maroon and silver. " She laughed and ended with "BTW they are very much in the running."
Glad to see she followed her heart.

Tyler walking on puts him in pretty good company of guys who thought they could play D1 and wanted to prove it. Kirk Walker, Mike Warhank are two that come to mind that worked their tails off and became all conference players at the D1 level.

I liked Ali's comments about how she has been going to LG camps forever and really is excited about being a Lady Griz. I am hoping that is what happens with Ms Joselyn Tinkle as her decision nears. That could be a special group of players under Selvig.

It is a good the be a Griz! :thumb:

Had a pretty good scouting report on Alexandra Hurley on the following:

http://girlshoops.scout.com/2/628704.html

"Hurley stands out for her scoring and relentlessness in working the offensive glass, pulling 2 - 3 boards in single sequences. She won the national 'Hoop Shoot' free-throw shooting title for 12 - 13 year olds, sinking all 25 shots in regulation, then all 10 in overtime. Hurley earned all-state anf Great Falls Tribune Super State honors...,she was among the state's top scorers and three-point shooters."

For the sake of family unity, I hope this girl stays on the girls' team. If she gets it in her head to try out for the guys' team, I'd bet a dollar to a doughnut that she beats out her brother, making for a HORRIBLE Thanksgiving at home!

Kevin Criswell was a walk-on as well, although perhaps with the promise of a scholarship down the road. Tyler dominated at last years Griz camp, by far the best player there.

Im never shocked to find one :moon: in the bunch. We have two great kids who have decided to be griz and then they read a comment like that . I will take your bet and I would bet so would Ali if you have read anything on these two she is the first to say what a great player her brother is. I dont think you have to worry about family unity because it is pretty clear Tyler and Ali stand together.

we all know she could start at Sac State though, on either team.

Interestingly, hoopgurlz.com has both Ali Hurley and Kirsten Tillman, who is going to Oregon St. next year, rated both three stars on their National Rating system just recently.

But the girls have their own team to play on. Why would she play on a men's team? It would be very courageous of her to give it a shot; she'd probably get the Brian Kontak award for courage in breaking down barriers in sport.

BTW: which one is Ali

Is Tyler really 6'-7"? I didn't realize he was that tall.

BTW: Since this thread has been resurrected:

If Tyler is 6'-7" then:

.....I am 6-3
.....Bobby Howard is 6-10
.....Cameron Rundles is 6-6
.....Matt Martin is 6-5
.....Andrew Strait is 6-11

and
.....Allie Hurley is 6-5 (Great catch Robin)
