Broadcast quality?

Cats beat Lady Griz 73-59. The teams shot about the same, poorly, but the LG were only 3-13 from 3 and 16-28 from the line. Rebounds were about even, but LG had 5 more TO. Fatkin had 24 points on 10-15 shooting. The LC looked better than the LG and then much better in the 2d half.

The LG seem better this year, but haven't played the best competition. The LG are 12-5 and 5-3 (tied for 4th), compared to last season. The LC are 6-2 (3d) and 11-8. It looks like the LG have 4 more at home, and 6 on the road. The LG were 12-11 and 9-8 last year.

So which is it (see below)?

The LG are better this year, due to the new coach,

or due to the returning players getting a year better, 2 new good frosh (recruits by prior coaches) arriving, and former player Fatkin returning?

and, would this have happened under Petrino, OR

The LG didn't have the talent to compete in the conference last year and prior years, so had to bring in a new coach? But all of the players contributing now were recruits of the prior coaches, except for 1. She played 5 minutes tonight. No other recruit of the new coach played at all tonight, and they have't been playing. So, where are the new coach's great recruits? Yes, Fatkin was allowed to come back. Would Petrino have allowed her back? OR

The LG are not much better this year? If so, why didn't the new coach upgrade the talent, and why isn't he coaching better.

I don't pretend to know the answers to any of these questions, except that the team looks better. I worry about being able to beat the better teams in the conference, but I'm hopeful.

From looking closely at player comments in articles, it seems that they like the new coach, or new coaching staff.

I'm not close to the program, so would be happy to see comments from others who are. Also, does anyone know why Fatkin left the program earlier. She always seemed like a good player to me. I assume there was a Shannon problem, but I have never heard anything.

These are all pertinent, observant points, mthoopsfan. Some can no longer be answered (similar to a question I ask: How Mike Petrino would be doing if this were his second season as H.C.?). Other aspects/questions you raised... will obviously be a part of the program and the process going forward. I didn't see much difference in talent between the teams last night. I DID see a difference in team culture and high kudos to coach Binford on the culture she's built at Montana State. It's a known fact/concept in college coaching that the process of building a program commonly takes five years (not 3 as some believe). So coach Holsinger is working with players who've been coached for up to 5 seasons (etc. etc) by two former coaches, one of whom had an impossible task, given the dreary circumstances of covid. I listened to coach Hosinger's extended comments in his post-game radio interview with Riley Corcoran and he took 100% blame (repeatedly) for the loss, explaining that he was simply not prepared for how mentally "beaten" (my words, not his, which were much longer) the Montana players were before the first minute was played. He cricicized himself for not being prepared as a start. It will be interesting to see how the coaches and players respond. I do not think it was as bad a loss as the "atmospherics" suggest. Montana lost for two general statistically indicative reasons, I believe: 57% shooting from the free throw line (12 lost points), and NOT locating and defending two identifiable perimeter shooters in the 3rd quarter who proceeded to make 6 treys over a 4-minute span (that should be on the coach!). Otherwise, this Montana team has a solid rotation that's still shuffling. They have the ability to finish conference play in the upper tier. Go GrizWBB.

Your not going to get much feed back because it's hard to even begin with your thread. You must not be watching LG games, the team is light years ahead of last season. The only thing you have right is Holsinger has basically the same team, however he can coach unlike his predecessor, that is why they are so much better!

Mthoops I apologize! I had brain lapse of a year, completely forgot about Petrino and was thinking about Schweyen. I liked Petrino and thought he did a good job last year. Griz would have been fine to keep him and wished they had at the time, also think Holsinger is doing good as well. Your points are all valid my memory is apparently not :(

Broadcast quality was putrid. I think it was the bobcat feed and not ESPN. Oh well back to the drawing board for the ladies. The faster they put this game in the rear view mirror the better.
I had higher expectations for the ladies in this game but plain to see we still have a ways to go. I’ll avoid calling out any individual player because they all missed the bus to Bozeman.
Binford has put together a very solid program in Bozeman and she’s to be congratulated for that. Cats shot lights out in the third and that’s were the game got away from them.
Brian has his work cut out but I think given 3/4 years he will do it.

It is definitely the MSU feed, because Montana State volleyball and men's hoops as well as women's hoops have been nearly impossible to watch... an ongoing problem that's gotten significantly worse with the ESPN+ connection. This is not an issue with MSU football. I'm assuming the MSU streaming system inside the Brick needs a complete overhaul or replacement.

Want to make sure you saw this in my post: "The LG seem better this year, but haven't played the best competition."

I don't agree that the team is "light years" ahead of last year. Last year, after playing the Cats the first time, the LG were 4-3. 5-3 this year. That's not light years to me. The next 3 games are winnable, EWU, Idaho, Weber, but the first 2 are on the road. Then Ida St and So. Utah, current nos. 1 and 2 in conference. Then NAU and PSU, both on the road. LG need to win those games. Idaho at home should be winnable. So. Utah and MSU at home. I'm not so sure the LG win either. No. Colo. on road is winnable. SS (4-4) may be a tough one.

I see the LG 7-5 in those games, assuming they win all of the winnable ones. That would be 12-8 in conference going into tourney. I think LG were 9-7 in conference going into the tourney last year. They can do better than that if they start playing a bit better and shooting the 3 better.

Completely agree with you, like I said in second post I completely skipped a year, forgot Petrino last season and was comparing this team to Shannon's last season 2 years ago. I liked Petrino and thought he did a really good job. Sorry for the confusion call it a Covid fog haha

Beginning to hold a lower opinion per ESPN+ LGriz "broadcasts", they goofed the NAU game last week, and hour late. Now this ,for one of the biggest showcases. Luckily have open air, switched to SWX that was very good, high quality. I'd like to usher a complaint, but I am not sure where to direct it to, ESPN? ESPN+, or contractors, UM Sports?

Did ESPN+ use the SWX feed?

Last fall I sent an email complaint to the Big Sky Conf regarding a botched volleyball game broadcast on ESPN+
I received a prompt reply, with an apology, and a promise to rectify the volleyball broadcast issues. Promptly done.
The Big Sky is not responsible for poor facilities equipment (video and streaming servers) quality at each of the schools, of which MSU, UNC and SUU are cellar dwellers. But I'm pretty certain a techie in the Big Sky complex handles all schedule and broadcast calendars. Don't hesitate to send an email to any of the commissioners. I've done so several times. I have always received prompt replies and compliance.
Regarding the quality of video and streaming... AND journalistic broadcast standards, Montana is light years ahead of the rest of the conference.

I watched 30 seconds of a Men's Kitten game, as that is the max my eyes can take of their colors after a full Football game, and I noticed their BB arena looks like a HS gym. Real odd.

The broadcast was fine though.
