Clayton Christian, the commissioner of higher education, was involved in Montana's interview process and is expected to approve the contract. Sources have told us the feeling with Hauck and the administration was the Hauck interviewed very well

Not sure of the chain of command here, and may have missed a few along the way:

Coach reports to AD
AD Reports to School President
School President reports to Commissioner of HE
Commissioner reports to BOR

Why in the holy f*** does the Commissioner of HE have to "bless" a hire made three levels down in the organization? it's not goddamned wonder shit can't get done at these red tape factories.

You're telling me the president of the university does not have the authority to hire a coach? Eff that. There's no WAY I'd ever want to be that hamstrung.

They don't really approve the hiring or the person per se, but the contract. I suppose given the right set of circumstances that they could reject a hire proposed by one of the presidents (chancellors at the satellite colleges), but I would suggest that it is a VERY rare occurrence.

Jonathon Smith was contacted about HC job and turned it down before he became new coach for the beavs. Matt lubick was contacted and he turned it down. He is in line for big pay raise now that he is the sole OC for the dogs. Beau Baldwin put in for beavs job. Is staying at Cal. When he was at Eastern he couldn't get a head coaching offer at a PAC 12 school. Didn't want to take a job at places like UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming or any other bottom dwelling coach killing schools. Wasn't interested in Griz job because for him it was huge pay cut and a step down. The problamo for Griz is that all of the most qualified guys are D1 assistants who make a ton of doe want to be head coaches at a D1 school. Talks in progress with Thompson an assistant from NAU, Kane and guy from Syracuse. Hauck is the only really qualified guy who is interested. I think that an announcement will be made tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

Ah, bureaucracy. It's amazing that anything gets done.

What got done?

Touché.

The most qualified guys, D1 assistants are looking at the griz job as a pay cut and a step down. The best FCS assistants are gun shy because griz fire coaches with winning records and the intense scrutiny from the press and Griz nation for not much money. Therein lies the problem. Hauck is the only really qualified D1 assistant who is interested. The question is who is more qualified or equally as qualified as Hauck who is willing to step down and take a pay cut to coach the Griz. Any up and coming assistant from a FCS school is only going to want to stay a few years and then move up. Hauck supposedly wants the job for the long haul. It may come down to Hauck being the only guy who wants it...then what.

Commissioner of Higher Education has to approve the contract? Ok, sure. So what did they do with the other 7 working hours that day? Even if it was submitted yesterday, pretty shocking that this wouldn't be a top priority.

Commissioner of Higher EDUCATION! Not commissioner of football program with entitled keyboard jockies. I would assume he has a TON of things to do. Most pressing would be how to trim even more from a budget that came up 227 million dollars short of projected. Some of which has to come from the university system.

227 million short? Sounds like his office isn't exactly doing their jobs anyway then, should have time to review the contract for one of our top revenue generating resources.

Congrats to @Coach_Hauck on returning to his native Montana as head coach of the Grizzlies. A pro's pro who always had time for you and one hell of a special teams coach. To every fish in Montana, consider yourself forewarned. @Aztec_Football

The $227 million budget shortfall was for the entire state, not just the university budget.

I thought I made that clear by saying some of which had to come from the university budget, but in hindsight, I could have done a better job. Yes, you are correct. That is the state. Some of the deficit will be cut from the entire university system.
