Break Out Game - Jeremy Calhoun

Not an under the radar player by any means, but I believe the Sac St. game is setting up to be a true break out game for Jeremy Calhoun. Yes we all know he scores a lot of TD's but this season he is showing an ability to get to the second level and take it to the house with sneaky speed and incredible Chase Reynolds-like vision. Its time for Calhoun to officially become a feature RB. He's great in short yardage, is a good receiver out of the backfield, a much improved blocker in pass-pro and is a real home run threat. The guy just has a nose for the end-zone and is a hard nosed, blue collar workhorse RB.

Prediction: 20 carries for 175 yards and 2 TDs + 3 catches for 30 yards. Time for Stitt to use Ngyuen sparingly as more of a change of pace back and turn Calhoun loose on the BSC.

I like Calhoun a lot. But Nguyen has had some big games himself and he's still better in the pass game, both as a receiver and in protection. I don't see his time lessening greatly.

Good problem to have.

Jeremy has been stealing snaps from Nguyen lately.

I would love to see Jeremy have a larger role in this offense. I've been thinking since mid-season last year that he will be a great back, and is truly our best back on this team. I like what Nguyen brings as far as leadership and pass game, but Calhoun is just bigger and faster.

Go Griz!

I know Nguyen is a polarizing figure on this board. I'm not trying to take anything away from what he brings to the table and I think he is the perfect compliment to Calhoun, but I think its time Calhoun becomes a feature back for this offense. Just look at the numbers.

Calhoun: 46 carries for 272 yards for 5.6 yards per carry 7 TDs and 51.4 Yards per game
Nguyen:69 carries for 274 yards for 3.7 yards per carry 0 TDs and 50.8 Yards per game

Nguyen has always been a third down type of back in my mind. I think he was featured more out of necessity. Now that Calhoun has emerge as an every down back, both should benefit.

I agree with everything on this board although I would say this: Nguyen has definitely earned and has shown he deserves the start and has the ability and talent to be a featured back. I like him in pass pro for the majority of the game to help get points on the board early and protect the QB while also being a threat in the run game. Then I like bringing Calhoun in in the 3rd and 4th quarter as the dagger. Their defense is tired and mentally exhausted defending sideline to sideline, the timing is perfect for Calhoun to break long runs in the late 3rd and 4th quarter. Love it!!

Perhaps. But coming into the game, Calhoun had 7 TDs and was tied for 3rd for scoring in the Big Sky. He did look great. Colin Bingham had the Break Out game. He is a weapon.

Bingham is going to be special. Doesn't play like a RS-FR. Not a single drop, acts like he's been there before, big and fast.....

nWIN's run was the longest from scrimmage in damn near fifty years. If it had been accomplished by Calhoun or Counts the Egriz girls would still be all wet in the leg even the morning after.

Calhoun has been running very well since he got back into the mix. However, some of those holes were so wide that almost any Griz back, including Nguyen, would have done the same thing. Same thing with Nguyen's hole for his big run yesterday. Any Griz back would have scored on that one. Calhoun's first TD on Saturday was a nice run. Had a good hole, but then made several moves and decisions later in the run, to get him to the end zone. To my recollection, that was his best longer run of the season. He has some nice tough shorter runs too.
