Brawl of the Wild Name MEANING

Filthy McGrizzly said:

The nickname is okay. It gets your attention. It is newish though, to somebody who wnt to UM when the original stadium was up against the mountain.... And one of the school songs was hail copper silver gold and the freshmen had beanies to wear.

I like the name. It's evocative of Jack London and both teams really do exist on the very periphery, the wild, of college football. Montana is a wild place. Missoula and Bozeman are, in many ways, outposts of urban civilization in the far-flung wilderness, America's Empty Quarter.

Anyone hating on the name is just being edgy and contrarian trying to get clout for being more of a "real Montanan" or a "real fan" and they need to pull the sticks out of their collective asses.

I've always interpreted it as a brawl between two wild animals. Hadn't considered "the wild" as a reference to Montana until now.

I like it because it bypasses the Cat-Griz vs Griz-Cat argument. Interesting how people grew up on different ends of that, to me it has always been Griz-Cat and the other variant sounds weird. But I just call it "the Brawl" now. Crisp, concise, cool.

Completely agree with this, especially the second para.

The Banner Society ranked 178 college football "amazing rivalry nicknames," and picked for No. 1. Brawl of the Wild ("Montana-Montana State, and they can call it Griz-Cat, Griz-Scat, the battle for the Great Divide Trophy, and so forth all they want.")

I've always believed it to be about "wild animals" as well, and while I don't mind the name, Cat-Griz has always been just easier to say. Griz-Cat just sounds weird.

When people say “gris/cat” it just gives off an inferiority complex vibe. Cat/gris just sounds better. Who cares who’s name is first, it’s just a title…

Agreed it is cat/griz and always will be.

Same. Not sure why people are saying Griz fans only call it Griz/Cat.

Is it Saturday yet :-)

I think you’re the only one I’ve ever encountered who called it “gris/cat” OR “Cat/gris”. I don’t know what that means.

I just refer to it as the “Cat game”. Just like I refer to a game against Idaho as the “Idaho game”. If I’m watching a BSC game, the Griz part is implied.

Just picturing this guy actually saying "gris" out loud to other fans in real life and getting the dumbest looks, then having to awkwardly explain something that only the most online Griz-obsessed weirdos would even know anything about.

I'm not a fan of the Brawl. It's completely fabricated by a marketer and not a good one. I'm also not a fan of that bronze statue that looks like my dog's crap after he eats peanuts.

Call it Griz-Cat or Cat-Griz and leave it be. The trophy should have some character and be portable enough to get in some trouble, but durable enough to survive a victory party, or several days of being lost, like the Stanley CUP. Let it be found one morning hanging around the neck of our Lady of the Rockies and dripping beer.

All this talk made me realize I'd missed a lot while living out of state. Oh, well, roll with the punches. :?

yes - it is a word play on Call of the Wild - with no truth.

I despise Brawl for a moniker mostly because my folks who graduated from UM in the 40s and both lived to almost 100, never succumbed to calling it that. They always called it Cat Griz Game and never Griz Cat. So I’ll stay with their tradition. They both watched the game every year till they died enjoying it immensely when the Griz won and as they got older enjoying it regardless of the victor. What I’ve noticed as a newer trend which I also plan to ignore, is to refer to the opposition as “our neighbors” or The school over the hill” instead of our opponents the bobcats, or our opponents the griz. What is that even about? Both sides seem to be guilty of this but I believe I first noticed it on coming from the Bobcats ,specifically Keaton Gillogly. I also resent the notion the whole state is divided one way or another when there are plenty of people who a) don’t care or b) like or at least don’t mind both teams. Go Griz.

It's really quite simple from anyone who has attended either school. Depending on your point of view, it's either the Cat game or the Griz game. Duh! Perhaps, simply, the game.
