Just wanted to show some love for this kid. My goodness has he been absolutely tremendous as a true freshman. At times, he looks like he’s the best player on the floor regardless of team.

I truly think he can score pretty much anytime he wants to, but he has the conundrum of trying to be a point guard and create for others as well. How many times did he just decide to take the ball to the hoop against Sac st and no one could stop him. It’s like when he makes his mind up that he will score, that’s exactly what happens.

Regardless of what happens this season, it’s sure going to be fun watching this kid grow.

In his last 3 games, he is averaging 21 ppg, he is shooting 58% from the floor (24-41), and 50% from 3 (5-10). True freshman and it seems like he’s just getting started.

If he can score anytime he wants to, might I suggest he start doing that doing those long stretches we seem to go without a single bucket?

Just a thought from someone who never played the game past freshman year of HS....

During those long stretches just maybe the other team is really defending him tightly.

I’m just saying whenever he went to the hoop, he scored. I bet he shot 90% when he drove. He was scoring at will. But, again, the conundrum here is he’s a point who is completely responsible for getting his offense to flow and to create for others. That’s the delicate balance here. He can’t win game by himself (Harland Frey great example last year). He needs to get the team involved without them failing.

For not being tall or particularly long he can get his shot off among the trees. Beasley also has this ability. At times the bigs clog the lane in this O, they have to learn when the spacing is right to go and when other options are better. More time playing together will help, when BW or RB have the D leaning and leaving a crease they can get to the rack in a hurry. I'm with some other posters who have mentioned hoping to see some more wrinkles offensively to space things better for our perimeter talent. We have had these issues in the past with a stagnant O as well, having some pretty good talent on the floor .

True Freshman. Big contributor. Ought to be playing in the West Coast, or Pac-12..
Hope we're able to keep him for another 3 seasons..

Dillon,

Please explain your reasoning for WHY it is STUPID for Griz fans  to bring up the POSSIBILTY of a loosing a gifted and proven top shelf player such as Brandon Whitney to a higher profile program, particularly now that the Transfer Portal is making it easier for players who want play ball somewhere else. We have our fair share of players who were raised 1200 miles away from a different climatic zone..... Hope the kid is having a great experience in Missoula...

We all know Lillard was an anamoly to the league. Weber was first on the scene with Damian and had recruited him since his high school Freshman year....no joke, and is exactly why they landed him. Pretty unusual talent for the Big Sky, and no one doubts that. Also, the transfer portal wasn't around when Lillard graced our league..

Hard knowing what Whitney's projection is, but it is odd to think that we could have him for another four years.

I think the concerns about his height were vastly overplayed here in SoCal, but it was the reason that a number of power 5 schools were less interested in him. He's a below the rim player, on the short end, and he is more a playmaker than a pure scorer. In that sense he looks like a lot of other kids from the LA/SD area which probably made his recruitment a bit weaker.

Most of the SoCal hoops guys were stunned that Whitney escaped CA to Montana. I've said this before, but it helps that D1 hoops in CA is a quagmire of mediocrity and so much of the recruiting done by power 5 schools is done by watching the same 10 elite travel hoops squad pummel lesser opponents into oblivion. That is a gross over simplification, but as a friend of mine here told me is that those top tier travel ball tournaments are over recruited and some of the regional stuff can be a goldmine.

Travis and his staff have some absolute dynamite connections here and it keeps producing some top tier BSC talent year in and year out.

Don't know about travel ball but I agree with your take on measurables. Shouldn't be surprising to Griz fans as we get these type of guys all the time. If Carter-Hollinger was 6'8" he would be playing in a better conference. Just like there are only so many off the rack, ready to play 6' 10" guys entering school each year and we can only get projects, at least to this point in DeCuire tenure.
