MBBALL Brackets Time

Arizona advances on to San Jose. They have a matchup in the Sweet 16 and potential matchup in the Elite 8 against coaching legends. John Calipari is up next and Sean Miller could be waiting in the Elite 8.

Filled a gap waiting for the first game today with a recording of the Iowa-Florida game. Confirms my impression that the NCAA-refs have added a new dimension to "let them play." And it's not just this game. It's brutal out there. The refs have had to call multiple double-technical fouls to maintain any kind of control.

Theme holding up ... in what the announcers call a "physical" half of basketball(?), the teams have scored just 60 points between them. Only 11 fouls called so far, despite what I would call at least a dozen public muggings. Honestly, I do not find this style of BBall very enjoyable to watch. Defense is great if it shows a bit of finesse, but this is not that. When it goes like this between two reasonably matched teams, the winner is usually the team that figures out how much they can get away with.

2/4 of the Final 4 is set with Arizona and Illinois. I looked at flights on American from Phoenix to Indianapolis. It is sold out to fly back next Tuesday and $1800 to fly back a day later on Wednesday.

Death, taxes and Gonzaga and Duke choking in the big moments in the NCAA Tourney.

As someone who watched Duke in the early 90’s when they were about as clutch as could be, this has been….something the last 20/25 years or so.
I know, only 3 titles since 2000. Epic chokeathon. And none of their players are ever ready for the top level of roundball. It's been a struggle to be sure.

I’ve been watching Arizona choke in the NCAA Tourney every season for 25 years. I watched their 2014 team with 5 future NBA players choke as a 1 seed against Kaminsky in the Elite 8, and then watched the 2015 team do the same thing over again choke in the Elite 8 against Frank Kaminsky and Wisconsin. In 2018 I watched Arizona get blown out by 21 points against Buffalo when Arizona had the consensus #1 draft pick in that upcoming draft on the team. 3 years ago Arizona was a 2 seed and was held to 55 points losing to Princeton in the first round. From Gilbert Arenas’ team in 2001 until this season no one has choked more in the tournament. Duke went to the Final 4 5 times in that team period, Gonzaga went twice and Arizona went 0.

The Final 4 tips off tonight. Who do you have winning the championship? The 2 best teams in the tournament are facing off in the semis this evening in my opinion with Arizona vs Michigan. If Arizona wins today and Monday it will be the first basketball or football championship from any university in AZ since 1997.

Rock and a hard place right now: Rooting for Illinois against my actual pick, UConn. Fan of Illinois from back when Lou Henson (successful coach at NMSU when we were there) was the Illini coach. Did not pick them because UConn has been too hot. Despite the pick, would love an upset ... currently only 5 down with under 3 minutes left.
