Boy! What a mess (and tragedy)

As we sit here doing whatever, officials in Sacramento and Davis, California consider if there will be a football game between Sac State and UC-Davis -- the traditional "Causeway Classic." Here's one article:
https://www.sacbee.com/sports/college/article221735315.html

Key quote: "... air quality is so poor that every high school football playoff game in Northern California this weekend has been postponed for safety reasons."

My guess is: No game, unless they can find a healthy location, literally overnight. There are probably venues open away from the smoke, but that could be next to impossible to set up on such short notice. (I'd say a Fresno State home game is in serious trouble too.)

UC-D would still get a playoff bid (they have 8 D-I wins, after all), but everything else would be up in the air.

I grew up about 20-30 miles south of Paradise, BTW. It's incredibly painful to see the pictures of how the fire turned a nice small town into ... ashes.

I like that this was posted a few hours after they announced it would be moved.

What a mess and tragedy is correct. I feel so sorry for the town of Paradise. The number of dead and still missing is astounding. My son's in-laws live in Chico. They have been doing a lot of volunteering.

Would have been a thought for a couple hundred student-athletes, coaches & staff folks for these two schools in lieu of the expense of heading over to Reno. Davis doesn’t need the game & getting pounded one last time this season seems kind of less than appealing for Sac State. What would I know?

Well, then blame Google. I restricted the search to the past 24 hours and only got the discussion article. The search did not bring up any notice that it had been moved to Reno ... which seems like a great idea, BTW. So where's the link?

Excellent!

Still ... strange that Google didn't show that on my search. I went looking after hearing (on Weather channel) how bad the air quality was in the northern Central Valley. Oh well, "best laid plans."

Moving it to Reno makes total sense because Nevada-Reno football is on the road (at San Jose State). Here's an update from the UC-Davis web site:
UPDATE (1 p.m.)

Fans making the drive to Mackay Stadium can park for free at the West Stadium Garage, located next to the facility. ADA parking is available on the fifth level, which leads to ADA seating inside the stadium.
UC Davis and Sacramento State students receive free admission with a valid ID.
Gate 1, at Mackay Stadium, is the main entrance for Saturday's Causeway Classic.
Gates open at 11 a.m.
There are no concessions for Saturday's game. Nevada Athletics staff will allow outside food and beverages that are not in a glass container.
UC Davis Athletics is aware of questions about ticket refunds. The Athletics Ticket Office, and UC Davis campus, are closed today due to very unhealthy AQI. We are working through options and will be able to assist everyone early next week. UC Davis Athletics thanks you for your patience and support as we navigate the challenges of relocating this game.
Kudos to the people involved. They're doing a great job putting this all together in such a hurry. I particularly like the way they handled parking and the fact that concessions (refreshments and food) could not be arranged on short notice. Want to bet private operator will flood the place with beer and food trucks? (That's how free enterprise works!)

For those who aren't familiar with the area: Barring bad weather over the Sierras (and it looks good right now), it's no big deal to drive from the Valley to Reno on Saturday morning -- freeway all the way. Game gets over in late afternoon ... you can easily drive home and not have to get a room in Reno. (OTOH, if you drive over, why not get a room and go home Sunday afternoon? :) ).

Stanford v Cal is also being looked at for postponement.
Announced: Postponed to Dec 1.

Still have not seen anything about the Fresno State game. That was already scheduled for a late start (8:30 pm), so I guess they figure they'll be all right.
