Bowls Are Better?

Pard, read the post you responded to, then apply its maxim. You are makin' this too convenient.

Pard, if you spoke English I may be able to understand what you're going on about.

Hell, well pard, I have a trick I use when my lack of skills render my ability to grasp a concept non-existent. Who am I kiddin'? I've never failed to grasp anything, but I had a serviceman once who was, like yourself, excruciatingly slow on the uptake. He told me that he refrains from placing himself in the stream of a conversation that he does not adequately understand. He may have been on to something.

Which one did you attend this year, pard? Here's a good tip: read an entire post and think as hard as you can before ever thinking about responding.

So y'all are saying the Griz would have gone bowling this year in spite of the fact the couldn't make the playoffs?
If the Griz had the exact same season in FBS, then yes, they would be headed to a bowl game. 7-4 is more than good enough to get yourself into a bowl these days.

The Griz fanbase travels well, and they have a tradition for turning out for the big road games. If the Griz were in a bowl game, wouldn't that be like a major season road game? Why wouldn't they turn out for that? I was in San Antonio in December 2004 in the midst of the Alamo bowl with Ohio State vs Oklahoma State. Texas and Michigan were in the Rose Bowl, but these fans didn't appear to be unhappy playing at the Alamo Bowl instead. SA is a city with a festival atmosphere and it was really exciting to be in the middle of all of it.

As far as football fans go, a big game is a big game, playoff or bowl. Six of one and a half dozen of the other. I think the best comment I ever read on this board said that football is played at all levels. A real fan just enjoys the level of play in any category without making meaningless comparisons as to which one is better. It's all good, just that there is a lot of variety in terms of choice.

My personal preference is for the Griz, no matter where they play, but one thing I will say is that mixing athletics and earning a college degree makes for extraordinary demands on the athletes and the programs and in that regard I say advantage bowls.

Any former FCS program that wasn't fortunate enough to move up into a BCS league would undoubtedly be relegated to a third tier bowl such as the below 2010 examples...

Little Caesar Pizza Bowl - Florida International vs Toledo
Go Daddy.com Bowl - Miami (OH) vs Middle Tennessee
R&L Carriers Bowl - Ohio U vs Troy
Humanitarian Bowl - Northern Illinois vs Fresno St

given the choice.. I'd take an FCS playoff game in bad weather.. over any of those above sad sack FBS bowls.

I would prefer to be at any game the Griz are playing in; a playoff game or the "who cares" bowl game. I suspect I would be joined by a few thousand other Griz fans at any location or any venue that the Griz were playing at........playoff game or bowl game.

I am really looking forward to this weekends playoff games. I hope to record and watch as many of them as I can . I am also looking forward to watching Oregon play Auborn and a few of the other "who cares" bowl games.

Does that make me an "adulterer" because I am not loyal to FCS? I love football...period.

Congratulations little girl on being successful half the time this year and getting to play in the BBVA Compass Bowl (yes, real). Here's your participation ribbon.

Well, pard, I sure would like to watch one more game at the end of the year.
One more game? I got to go to 4 more games at the end of the season last year and I have to say I liked all of them except for the outcome of the last one.

like getting on a Griz board and INSTANTLY assuming "UNC" is the Tar Heels... :thumb:
like you said.... gotta think long and hard before you type

"one more game at the end of the year"... was clearly a generalization
"which one did you attend this year"... is being specific...
make up your mind

Yep, that was a glarin' mistake on my part, pard. I guess I just had never seen a fella refer to UNC without it bein' the Tarheels.

One thing you might want to realize is that askin' a specific question stemming from a generalization is not only logically valid, but should also be expected. Hell, it's often the route to clarification. Example:
A: "I only drink Budweiser."
B: "I saw you drink a Miller at the ballgame, what gives?"
A: "When I have the choice, I only drink Budweiser."
B: "Now I understand, good day to you, sir."

So I need not make up my mind on that front. I hope this has been helpful, pard.

You're welcome,

Ashley

The question is... do we watch an FCS playoff game, or the Chocolate-Covered Dill Pickle Bowl... Since we compete and keep interest in the FCS, I will watch those games... always wondering if the Griz are better than what's on the screen. As for your argument about the the "big bowls".... I'm sure I'll watch the Rose Bowl, though I'm pissed TCU is there and not Stanford. Christ, send TCU to the Orange Bowl instead of ruining two games. I'll take in the Orange Bowl to watch Stanford and Andrew Luck, but won't obsess about being there for every play. A Wisconsin/Stanford contest would have been fabulous. I honestly havent paid attention to who's in the Sugar Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. But I hear that powerhouse Connecticutt is in one of them while Michigan State isn't. I hear the BCS contract is running out this year... if that's true... THANK GOD!

Hell, pard, I'll watch whichever one sounds more delicious. That being said, I do see your point about The University of Connecticut being somewhat underpowered and not very compelling to watch. I'm thinkin' that I might go ahead and watch Wofford if they can make her far enough. Hell, I'm still lamentin' the fact that Robert Morris, Lehigh, and Bethune-Cookman got knocked out so early.

Woffford is actually a fun team to watch... they maximize their limited talent. As we found out a couple of years ago.

I know, pard. That's why I want to watch them. They have one hell of a squad. Hell, they seem to made up of guys who have likely nailed an ex-girlfriend in their respective living rooms before sending them off to get married in another locale.

LMAO... you have a good memory!

It doesn't have to be Bowls or Playoffs for FBS football. There are lots of ways to structure things so that both are involved.

In my opinion, there should be a 16 team playoff with all 11 conference champs involved, and 5 at large spots. The playoff games could technically be called Bowls, with a tiered bowls structure setup. The only concern is 4 rounds, so maybe a 3 round playoff is better with 8 teams, or play-in games for the lower ranked teams.

Also, the teams that do not make the playoffs could play in bowls. Why Not! These bowls would not suck any more than they do today. Would it be any different for two 6-6 teams from the B10/SEC to play each other in a bowl while a playoff was going on? No, it doesn't mean anything today, so why couldn't it continue. After the playoff teams are identified, the remaining bowls could choose from the non-playoff field. Why can't a system like this be setup?

Well heck fire Bubba, kind of like the usual Will Farrell schtick you were kind of amusing at first and then descended into an exercise in tedious psychobabble.

You go girl.

The bowl system will not go away if there is a playoff. If they go to 16 team playoff system, the bowls will chose from the other 60 bowl eligble teams.

I meant to type "you're", pard. I apologize for my mistake, and hope my post makes more sense to you after you apply the foregoing revision. The mistake itself is doubly embarrassing to me because I fancy myself an enthusiast in the field of attention to detail. The best of luck to your players in their upcoming football game, and thank you kindly for calling this error to my attention.
