Boone 101

I thought I'd give my personal endorsements on things to see, do and eat for all you Grizzards making the long trip to see your team lose. ;)

Food:
Portofino (get the spiced sirloin or the fried green tomorato BLT), Char, Black Cat(chicken enchiladas or the Don't be a Jerk Burrito), Coyote Kitchen (Get the Toas Boat, featured in Our State Magazine this year), Boone Bagelry, Comeback Shack (Fried Green Tomato Burger, Comeback style Burger, chicken strips), Mellow Mushroom (Red potato pie or Cosmic Karma). Woodlands in Blowing Rock (chopped pork BBQ, NC style like God intended), Joe's, Maccadoes. Boone is a mecca of good restaurants. Even if you stray from my list of personal favorites, you're bound to find something you like. (no particular order)

Bars:
Char (known by App students as Charbar), Paolucci's(known by App students as Pow or PowPow). These two are boni fide night clubs on Howard Street (one block closer to campus than King St). Friday night is 1,2,3 night at Paolucci's $.50 jello shots, $1 beers, $2 shots and $3 mixed drinks. Go here only if you're young (or young at heart) and you want to see some real craziness. Good luck getting a drink at Char or even getting in if it's past 11 pm.

Boone Saloon, Galaleo's, Murphy's, Porto's, Macadoes. These will be more your speed assuming that most of you travelers are a little older than 18-22. The consensus on AGS among older App fans is that Murphy's would suit you best, though the others are great.

tApp Room, Klondike, Parthanon, Town Tavern are gonna be 90% students as well but they're more dive type bars with really good specials and cool atmospheres. tApp room is my favorite. Klondike and Parthenon are the "Greek bars." Croakies and boat shoes required.

(no particular order) All within a short walk from campus

The Tailgate:
Come gameday, make sure you take a long walking tour of most of the tailgating. It's pretty vast (we are the attendance leader after all). It's a beautiful campus and worth the time to explore. There are a ton of cool tailgate vehicles that people have outfitted. The main student lot is on River St and is more of an outdoor party than a traditional tailgate. If you walk through there you're likely to catch some heat for your Montana garb. Everywhere else, where the crowd is older, you will be treated like a king. Stadium lot, which takes a lot of $ to have a spot, will be your best bet as a visiter. Lot's of very generous alumni.

Other activities besides the game:
Downtown Boone (King St) is a must. The Mrs will LOVE the cool shops (Mast General Store, Farmer's Hardware ect). Blowing rock has good shopping and a ton of good restaurants too (about 20 minutes east). If you have kids they will enjoy the Linville Caverns which are located off of 221 (approx. 45 min. from Boone). Linville Falls is located off of 183. Howards Knob is a cool spot. It's the mountain (or I'm sure y'all would call it a hill) that's right over town. Offers basically a topographical map of campus. Ziplines (Hawksnest, Screaming). Float one of the rivers (Wahoo Adventures) rents and drops you off at a point and picks you up (only do if it is warm with kids). Drive the Parkway (Price Park Lake, Viaduct, and other attractions close to Boone). These include hiking, fishing, and other things. Grandfather Mountain (swinging bridge and small zoo).

Swweeeeeeeet! Thanks for the recs, Gonzo. The wife and I are making the trek from Seattle. In fact, we're planning on spending about 9 days in NC. Can't wait! :thumb: :thumb:

Not sure if these places are still around or how Gonzo would rate them, but back in '05 we ate at the Daniel Boone Inn and drank at the Library (Bar with cocktail waitresses dressed as librarians).

Agree with the Daniel Boone Inn. It's homestyle food served family style (read-- all you can eat.) Come early, because the line usually wraps around the building. IMHO, the best food in Boone is found at Hob Nob Farm Cafe on King St. Sandwiches, burritos with excellent homemade salsas, entrees, and lots of other great choices. Have never had a bad meal there and sometimes drive the 1.5 hours from Winston-Salem just to eat there.

We can't wait to come to Boone...and watch our Griz Beat Appy State!!! We're flying into Charlotte Thursday and driving up to Boone on Friday! Thanks for the recommendations! It will be fun to visit a campus with comparable tailgating and fan support, like the Griz! We'll treat you to the same next year!!!

The Library had a big fire about 5 years ago and hasn't been open since. DBI is still there. IMO it's the most over ratted restaurant in Boone. It's VERY expensive for southern food.

Agree on the DBI-- it's good, but not truly outstanding, and a bit pricey. But if you're really hungry it fits the bill.

A few more things:

Since this is a night game, the collective blood alcohol content is going to be SKY HIGH. I hope all you get are some playful boo's while you're here, but I apologize in advance if someone offends you. Don't forget that football is the religion of the south and App students like to party. I hope I get to meet some of you and I'll be happy to share a little shine to even the playing field. :thumb:

Speaking of booze, Friday night down town is the "Art Crawl." The first Friday of every month, most of the places on King street will be giving out free wine, beer and food. Some places have art galleries (Boone is a very artsy town) while others participate just to promote their stores. My favorite spots are Glug(a cool little beer shop), Farmer's Hardware, Anna Bananas, Soulshine and High Country Glass(the last two are head shops, and they don't always participate but when they do they'll just hand out PBR cans). It's a pretty fun time and an absolutely free way to get hammered. It goes from about 4pm-10pm and is perfect for our usual 3:30 kickoffs the next day since you can get hammered, get to bed fairly early and get up early to start the tailgate. Word to the wise, be sure to pace yourself. Having unlimited free wine (and it's usually pretty cheap stuff) can have you vomiting by 8:30 if you're not careful.

That's not anyone here. 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

ugh, the best laid plans....I planned an extended football/fly fishing excursion to Boone and then back up to Montana to catch the Griz/Liberty game...but my son (who is working his rear off to get a college baseball scholarship) has been invited to play in some showcase ball games during that time, so I will be going along with him. Of course it is my great pleasure and honor to be there to watch him compete for his dreams, but I really wanted to visit Boone; it's just one of those places that a guy ought to visit at least once, particularly when the Griz and the Mountaineers are squaring off.

To all that are making the trip, have fun, yell loud and have safe travels.

Bump!

If any of our Grizitors have questions about Boone, Appalachian, The High Country or Kidd Brewer Stadium, feel free to PM me. I've lived in Boone since 2007 and I've worked in the tourism industry since I graduated from ASU.

My 2 cents on restaurants in Boone.

Daniel Boone Inn is not worth it; last time I was there was in '81. 'Course, SOMEBODY likes it, else it would not still be there. I suspect those somebodies are tourists.

A MUCH better bet is Makoto's Japanese Steakhouse. I've been going there after App games for about 15 years. Since our game is a 6:30 kickoff, dinner after the game is not going to work. For Griz fans, I suggest doing Makoto's for lunch on Sat. or dinner on Friday night. Peddler Steakhouse is also excellent, but it's a tad pricey. Enjoy.

BTW, Makoto's is not the same place as Macado's. Makoto's is on US321 going out of town; Macodo's is downtown on King St.

Further, I have a feeling that there will be little reason for any Griz fan, properly bedecked in Griz colors, to go ANYWHERE for lunch on Sat., other than App alumni' tailgates.

I hope those were commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce!

Sorry to hear about the demise of the Library...was hoping they'd switched to having the librarians dressed as cocktail waitresses.

Made a request for the immediate release of Monte's cousin from the Boone Mellow Mushroom. Got this back.

As much as I would love to return Monte's cousin, I'm afraid he just doesn't want to leave! He loves the pizza too much. Not to mention he is really digging the easy life up here in the littler mountains. I would even say he has gone as far as to become a full blown Mountaineer! However... stop on by and pay him a visit, and I'll be sure to buy you a beer. Have fun at the game, and Keep on Shroomin!

The Mellow Mushroom is a great place for pizza. If you head there you're welcome to try to claim my beer from Chase.

I think Boone and Missoula have more in common than just good football teams.
