Boise State tops MWC in $ Distributions

... UM also doesn't have WSU and Gonzaga in its back yard competing for dollars like Idaho does. They're pretty much f***[*]. And that's coming from a UI grad...
Yeah, WSU -- with its Pac-12 schedule -- sucks the football tit dry, and Gonzaga crushes BBall. So both of the (potentially) "money" sports are screwed for UI.

Hell, I WENT to UI, and we STILL would drive over to WSU to watch football games... :thumb: The only reason I went to UI football was because I was in the Navy ROTC and we had the contract to do all the parking before the game, and clean the dome after the game.

Boise State for Montana is the nagging equivalent of the job you should have taken - but didn't, the woman you should have married - but didn't or the life altering choice you should have made - but didn't. Without the ever-present damning spector of a BSU Montana could be rolling along much more comfortable and self-satisfied in its role as a premier FCS force, and as the historically-dominant leader of an increasingly diluted Big Sky Conference. Instead now there is always the shadowy presence of BSU to remind us of what would'a, could'a - and maybe should'a been - if UM hadn't opted to continue into a second half a century as a one-eyed king in the land of the BSC blind.

BSU is the UM of the MWC. They are a conference outlyer both in terms of support and $$ relative to the rest of the conference.

Missoula metro area has roughly 113,000 people. That includes (per MSA designation, the towns of Missoula, Bonner, East Missoula, Orchard Homes, Seeley Lake, Clinton, Frenchtown, Wye, Condon and Lolo Hot Springs).

So, what it conspicuously does NOT include is the following (ALL well within 2 hours drive): Butte (34,200), Helena (28,190), Anaconda (9,300), all of Ravalli County (population 40,000+ including Hamilton (4,400), Darby, Victor, Corvallis, Stevensville, Florence), St. Regis, Polson, Arlee, Charlo, Alberton, Superior, Drummond, Philipsburg, Kalispell (with a 93,068 Metro population, likely including Whitefish, Bigfork, and Lakeside), Ovando, Thompson Falls, Plains, etc., etc., etc.

There's LOTS more than 200,000 people within 2 hours. More like 300,000. It's no "Boise", but it's no Moscow, Idaho either. And yes, that does not include the multitudes of people who drive much more than 2 hours to Griz games every weekend from all points inside and outside Montana.
I stand corrected on the number. My big miss was the Kalispel thing -- I had no idea there were that many people in that area.

Of course, if we're going to go out two hours from BSU, then we should include the Twin Falls region, which as another 100,000 all by itself. Based on jerseys on the streets, the Broncos draw pretty well from there too.

Very good point about UI in Moscow. Even if you include Lewiston, Couer d'Alene, Post Falls, and a few other small towns, you don't get to even 200,000. Just shows that if it were just about population numbers, UI should be reconsidering its overall athletic program (and budget). ;)

I'm wondering why people think we need more attendance to be an FBS program. That must be a requirement of which I am unaware.

Yeah, I knew he was wrong about that, if you include Spokane. But there probably aren't a lot of Vandal fans in Spokompton.

I don't. That's why I said BSU is an outlier in the MWC.

Although I DO believe that a MWC conference schedule WOULD bring in more fans.... :thumb: :thumb:

I would definitely go to 2-3 more games per year.

There aren't a lot of Vandal fans anywhere, but Spokane has a big number of Vandal alumni.

Interesting numbers, all right. You got me again, but it absolutely never occurred to me to include Spokane (or Pullman, for that matter) as part of a viable fan base for UI. Sounds like I wasn't that far wrong.

uhhh no. boise is about 3rd - 4th in thew mwc in attendance and do not even have the largest athletic budget in the mwc, they are not an outlier

I'd like to propose a move to the MWC, but I'd miss terribly the sweet aroma of feed lots in beautiful Greeley, the pleasant pre-game stroll past crack houses in Cheney, the lovely scent of stale sweat that permeates the 3 domes in our conference, and the chance to play our basketball tournament in a yoga studio.

That's a lot to give up, right there.
Greeley doesn't have feedlots. It is illegal to own livestock there.

Feedlots don't have to be within the city limits to dominate the atmosphere. It must be downwind from several; the stench is unmistakable. Smells just like Shepherd, MT.

True. There's lots around small towns around Greeley; such as La Sall, Kersey, Platteville that have feedlots.

Correct. Fresno, Boise & SDSU finished 3, 4, and 5 in all G5 teams as far as average home attendance. The rest of the conference? Mmmmm....not so much.

Attendance isn't keeping the Griz out of FBS. UM's attendance would be middle of the pack now in the MWC. And that is against a FCS schedule. UM would draw more of its own fans and more fans of the visiting team if it were in the MWC. We can debate why the Griz aren't in FBS, but I don't think it is attendance.

Nope. And within the next 2 years, it won't be facilities either.
