Bobcats aren't a rival

Kind of like Bill Simmons used to say about the Red Sox and Yankees, "rivalry" implies that two teams are roughly equals so when two teams just hate each other (but are not competitive) it's really just a feud. We are feuding with the Cats but they aren't our rivals. EWU is well on their way to becoming a true rival though.

Well kids, Bill Simmons "aint God", and he certainly isn't the purveyor of wisdom when it comes to rivalries! To say that 113 years of cross state football, competition for athletes and monies, allegiances that split families, 21,000 + fans at the last game in Bozeman, and message board discussion that states EVERYTHING to the contrary would simply disagree with your baked conclusion.

Realizing you are new to the message board game, let me simply say you my friend are in denial, "wishing upon a star", and hoping for an alternate universe. I hope you find it. But, for those grounded in reality, the rivalry lives on! Go Cats.

Oh, and I hope your prince charming comes to kiss you on the lips sleeping beauty, because you are dreaming!

Thanks! I had no idea about this newfangled message board thing till now  The Cats are just a team we don't like, they aren't a rival since they haven't been competitive with the Griz. Maybe you should save your wishes and dreams for your Cats program that just lost a whole lot of talent.

I think a rivalry transcends the field or court and plays a part in everyday life. I personally know very few people with whom I have daily contact with from EWU or Univ. of Idaho whereas I run into Bobcat fans everyday of the year and a well-placed jab is usually part of any conversation. As a school counselor, I've been chastised for even suggesting a student go to UM, even when it makes academic sense! Beating EWU is of the utmost importance in football mainly because the fans are not fun or funny people. I don't care so much in other sports. The same is true with UofI. I want to beat the cats in everything. That's a rivalry!

This nails it. Idaho was not a rival, and EWU never will be. Virtually everyone in MT (or from MT) who pays much attention to anything picks sides between Griz and Cats. Other games can be important -- but those are just other games.

When Idaho was in the Big Sky, they were hated and a true rivalry, especially on the hardwood. A similar debate would be, who does Oklahoma consider their rival? Is it Oklahoma State or Texas? Most around here would tell you Texas, and its not even close. Doesnt seem logical, but it is. Now you talk to a OSU fan, and they will be more likely tell you Oklahoma is their chief rival.

Idaho was absolutely a rival. Go walk through the Hall of Champions (or whatever it's called) and you'll see The Little Brown Stein that they used to play for.

Yeah, I know about The Little Brown Stein but and rolling the potatoes out on the BB court but Idaho left that behind, I used to see Idahutter as a rival but even as a little kid I didn't ever want to lose to the cats! I spent time in southern Idaho in the late 70s and early 80s and Idaho and Boise seemed like a bigger rivalry than Idaho and UM.

I remember throwing spuds at the Vandals in Dornblaser. Idaho was hated, and hated even more in hoops, but I don't think they were a true rival. I attended one game in Moscow, but I've gone to dozens in Bozo.

113 years of competition between two in State teams. Game sold out every year and generates more excitement in State than any other game on each others schedule. I would say that it is a rivalry!
Amen Bigsky. I am a diehard Griz fan. On Cat-Griz I hate the Cats with every fiber of my being. I suspect you feel the same about the Griz. That is why it is a rivalry! If you're a Montanan you know this.

Agreed. 100%.

I love the Cats because -
Someone has to be attracted to fat girls.
Someone has to embrace losing in this world.
Someone has to like playing football in a cow pasture.
Someone has to enjoy eating that crap that wheat Montana produces.
Someone has to like sheep when even the fat girls won't love you.
Someone has to like little blue cups.
I don't have to like any of the above things because the Cats have stepped up for the rest of us. I love the Cats.
I read this earlier and it didn't quite hit my funny bone, but after a couple of drinks, this was really funny. Thanks for the laugh and Happy Thanksgiving. May we all appreciate what we have. I might even drink to that.

This I agree with 100% -- and I've been rooting for the Griz and against the Cats more than 60 years.

Of course, Idaho's all-time record against us is 55-27-2. By the logic of some on this thread, that would mean UM isn't really a rival to UI either, right?

When I went to UM, trust me, football was taken far more seriously by Idaho than Montana. But, the game was a big one for the very few Griz who attended and watched, in huge disappointment, when the Griz scored, which they rarely did back then. It was the best excuse ever to down some Everclear and grape juice.

I logged on to egriz to wish the Griz luck this weekend and throughout the playoffs. I was going to start a new thread, but there is always a Bobcat hating thread over here. Thanks for continuing to make MT a proud icon of good football. Sorry my favorite team isn't good enough to lick the dirt off of your cleats. You've got a great team this year, and you wont be going anywhere but up. This Cat fan will supporting the Griz this weekend.
