Bobcat WR Manny Kalfell

Fellas..

We are talking about a young mans death. Why do some of you have to come across as so cold hearted?

In this particular case I deleted posts that might not otherwise be deleted in respect of the loss of a Montana State football player.

Please show the class this thread is worthy of.

Good on you Payton. No matter what our feelings on suicide are, this is a tragedy and people are hurting right now. It's not the time for politics or debates, but to grieve, love, and care for others.

I didn't read the deleted posts but thanks for protecting me (us) Payton. As PT said, now is the time to grieve, love and care for others.

Manny sounded like a great Montana kid with a big heart and a great Montana work ethic !!!

God bless him, his family, and his Bobcat teammates during this very difficult time !!!

Sorry for my earlier post. Not the thread for it. It bums me out thinking what his friends and family are going through. I hate these threads.

Many are surprised by this tragedy, and rightfully so. Manny "...was liked by all because of his smile and spirit...". And yet he took his own life. Depression is often masked. But there are signs. Look out for your friends and family. Someone you know most likely is in need. UMs' own WR Ellis Henderson bravely came out with his battle of depression. It is everywhere. Be kind, be alert. RIP Manny.

My former manager and friend committed suicide a couple of years ago. The problem is that you can know a person and still not know what they are capable of. He graduated long ago Magna Cum Laude from Utah so not a stupid person but depression can destroy logic and reason. I hope those left behind can find peace with Manny's choice.

I just read an article stating that 25% of college athletes battle severe depression....
Oh, they do. And its an irony, its biochemical. They fight depression through athletic activity because the activity produces endorphins, the natural and powerful anti-depressant.

So, for the moment, during and after the workout, they are free of the demon. So they do sports. It sets them free, temporarily.

It is a self-medication. Believe me, as someone with an athletic background, graduate work in biochemistry, and continual coaching experience, the role of collegiate sport and its relationship to depression is significant.

This is hard to digest. Every athletic department should allow for one designated councilor position. Some adult on staff that kids can come to for advice, perspective or guidance. The news last night said about 30 MSU students are getting or have got counciling for suicidal thoughts this year. I'm sure it's proportional at other schools. Here in Butte seems we average 1-2 suicides per year in schools. This year a 6th grader and a highschool kid, so far...
