He didn't try to go to FBS. That was my point. How many Griz head coaches have left for FBS, who didn't get a head coaching job. Just read the words slowly.

I know him quite well, and don't think he ever tried to become an FBS head coach after leaving UM. Prior to UM, he had been an assistant at multiple FBS schools, including Oregon, WA St an AZ St. I suppose he made some inquiries with new head coaches he knew.

Again, my original post asked if any UM head coach had ever left UM to an assistant coach in FBS, not whether anyone applied to coach in FBS.

What should concern everyone is that he's listed as "Former Colorado School of Mines HC" and not "Former HC at Montana"....apparently the writer felt he'd be better recognized by referencing the School of Mines FFS.
