Bob Stitt has Earned a New Contract

Here's how this thread works:

The proposition was that Stitt deserves a new contract, regardless of what happens on Saturday. Come on in, state your opinion, and then get the hell out. There will be no ongoing debate.

Sincerely,

John Donvan, Moderator

I always knew you were a shanty Irish bastard :P

I am not a big Stitt fan. That is not news. However I will give credit where it is due and Coach Stitt has earned a modicum of credit for the overall improvement the team has shown the last half of the season. Most notably to me is the apparent change in Stitt's own mindset in play calling and the unnecessary risks that are no longer being called!

HOWEVER, I said at the beginning of the year that the team must show significant improvement before an extension should be granted. At this point I do not believe that significant improvement is in evidence. If they win handily this weekend I might change my mind. Even then I would think a three year extension is excessive.

While I am a bit upset about all of the Mick Delaney critics, I actually wonder where the program would be if Robin Pfluhgrad had not been wrongly terminated?

Two other quick points need to be made. I am concerned about the idea that last year's team up and quit at the end of the year. This not only does not reflect well on last year's coaching but does a grave disservice to all of the young men who busted their butt's for our entertainment. They may not have been successful but to suggest they quit is pure bullshit!

The other point is that we need to accept the possibility that even with a win this week there is still no guarantee that the Griz will get an at large bid. If NAU wins this week I am not that confident UM gets a bid over Weber, NAU, or SUU. If the Committee takes 4 BSC teams I would think UM and EWU would battle for that last spot and given the head to head matchup I am not sure an 8-3 record will trump a 7-4 record with a win over that 8-3 team on the résumé.

The quality win thing is getting out of hand. The Griz played who they were scheduled to play. IF they win and don't get again, that ain't Stitt's fault, maybe other than the fact that last year's meltdown set them far back at the beginning of this season with the pollsters. Other than that, the Griz lost to No. 9 Eastern Washington, and a Weber State team on the road that is going to now worse than share the Big Sky title, but also BEAT Eastern at their house, and the ONLY conference game they lost was the game they didn't have Cantwell. If that turns out to be the Griz only two REAL losses this season, and they don't get in, I can sure as hell live with that. I'll actually sleep just fine every night until next August, if those turn out to be the only two losses in a year when the Griz played the f----in Washington Huskies in Husky Stadium, with Jake Browning, Dante Pettis, Miles Gaskin and Vita Vea.

Yes! He has recruited very well. We are poised to make the playoffs and most importantly he has the locker room. The team appears unified this year (looking in from the outside) which was my concern in past seasons. I believe Coach Stitt deserves an extension and I’m glad to have this staff. I like the direction we are going.

In the alternative, does anyone think the program would be better served starting over, losing some commits and team stability, and then rebuilding for at least a couple more seasons under someone else?

Egriz logic for at least the first year under that scenario would be "See, Stitt drove it into the ground. He wrecked the program, so it will take time."

But time on Egriz is a relatively short term. By year two, that worm would start to turn and a lot of the same people who didn't like Stitt would start to not like the next guy either.

Again, I support Stitt/Semore, especially if they beat the Cats and make the playoffs. However, I think it has taken too long to get the program up towards the top. I truly believe that it shouldn't have taken this long, and it still isn't there. UM isn't even in the top 25 going into the last game of the season. Jeez, Delaney's last 2 teams were nos. 12 and 8 in the final polls. Why are the Griz not even in the top 25 at this point of the 3d season? I can argue both sides of this debate. A win next weekend completely tips the balance, tho, at least for me.
It’s taking too long to get the program up towards the top? It’s not like we were strapped with a loss of scholarships for his first two years. Given what he was handed, we are right where we should be… Maybe a little lower, but headed in the right direction.

eGriz “Stitt needs to be fired” Arguments:

1) Can't win on the road. When he beats the 'scats on Saturday, he'll be 3-1 on the road this year in FCS games. Argument null and void.

2) Ended last season on a horrible slide and lost the locker room. When he beats the 'scats on Saturday he'll have ended THIS season winning 6 of 7, INCLUDING three road games. These players LOVE playing for him and it shows, both on the sidelines and in the locker room.

3) His defense sucks--they give up 30 points a game and 500 yards of offense a game and show no improvement and he won't fire Semore. Last four games, they're 3-1 and have given up 343, 298, 218 and 362 yards (306 average). 17, 41, 15, 14 points. They're 2nd in sacks. 1st in INT's. 2nd in RZ defense. 6th in YPG. 5th in rushing D.

4) He can't win the big game. NDSU, SDSU, EWU, MSU, NAU (and MSU this weekend). Okay, this one is a little week, but he hasn't had a ton of chances this year...EWU and WSU being the notable exceptions).

5) His offense is too complicated and too easily defended. This year they've scored 45, 56, 41, 45, 39, 41, 27, 17, 44. < 20 once. < 30 twice. > 40 SIX times. #1 in scoring offense. #4 in total offense. More RZ TD's than ANY TEAM in the conference.

6) He can't and won't make halftime adjustments. ISU: 21 points in 1st half, 10 in 2nd. WSU: 34 points in 1st half, 7 in 2nd. NAU: 172 yards in 1st half, 111 in 2nd. Weber: scored 6 in 1st half, 21 in 2nd half.

What else...I'm sure I'm missing some.

Haslam ought to be waiting in the tunnel to give Stitt a new 3-year contract after we smack down the skiddy kitties this weekend.

@George

"The quality win thing is getting out of hand. The Griz played who they were scheduled to play..."

A very valid point, which makes me ponder next years schedule. Brint brought this up elsewhere. Obviously preseason rankings can go out the window fairly quickly. How about those Fightin' Hawks? Shit happens.

So based on how things look right now, "quality" wins. (If we come out on top that is)

Out of....

* Western Illinois
* Northern Iowa

In...

*Southern Utah
* Insert team here (No one really knows until the season gets rolling)

One conference "quality" win. As GF said....We play who we are scheduled to play.

Stitt was "handed" a team that had been ranked no. 12 in the nation the prior year, and no. 8 the year before that. Stitt was "handed" a strong program with a great winning tradition, a great stadium and game day atmosphere, and very good support. No f-ing way that the loss of a few scholarships after that has caused UM to be unranked at this point in the 3d year. The Griz have declined considerably in the last 3 years, anyway you measure it. That doesn't mean that Stitt should be fired. You think going from nos. 12/8 in the nation to not in the top 25 is going in the right direction? The excuses that some make are what causes me to wonder whether some understand football.

Nobody in (or out of) the organization can control the pollsters minds. Delaney teams were ranked ABOVE their talent level...Stitt’s appear to be ranked somewhat BELOW theirs...it is what it is. Polls aren’t the be-all end-all for playoffs or determining team/program trajectory.

I agree with your first sentence, but call BS to your next sentence. The polls were done after the season and after the playoffs. They were relatively accurate.

Weren't the 2 years before that the 2 Jordy Johnson years though? Hell of a drop-off at QB after that. All respect to Gus for stepping up, but a big difference in my opinion.

Is it an oversight or a real decision to exclude the leading BSC passer, Meier of UCD, from the "best QB in the conference" discussion?

Maybe. But he’s doing it it mostly with the best WR by far that could be making him appear better on paper than he really is. However I’ll fully admit I could be totally wrong there.

Never heard that one before. His numbers speak for themselves, even more notable on a team that is not the strongest. We play them the next two years; I will predict now he will be a problem for us.

He's also been playing ALL of his games, even in blowouts, and when he's gone up against better defenses, his numbers have fallen a little.

I think he's good, but I'm not ready to say he's the best in the conference.

So he's durable; let's hold that against him. And he doesn't get kicked out of games for targeting. He needs to be in the discussion.

I think the point was that he is not coming out of games that they hold comfortable leads in to allow his back up to get some reps

About the Delaney/Stitt stuff, STATS had us ranked high, but Massey had us a lot lower.

Final Massey/STATS ratings:
2012: 33 STATS: Unranked
2013: 18 STATS: 8
2014: 21 STATS: 12
2015: 17 STATS: 14
2016: 32 STATS: Unranked
2017: 18 STATS: Unranked

Maybe the truth is in between? But it does at least sort of support AZ's take that we were over-ranked before and under-ranked now.

FWIW, MSU is ranked 31 in Massey right now.

No, he's been playing when the game is well in hand, which may have something to do with why his stats look so good.

Something, maybe. Everything, uh-uh.

Question for those who argue that UM should wait until after Saturday before offering Stitt a contract:

Do you think that the spectre of non-renewal (i.e., negative reinforcement) will improve Stitt's coaching performance on Saturday?
It’s not negative at all. Fear is mankind’s greatest motivator; always has been, always will. In fact, I believe this “spectre” was already given to Stitt and may be part of the reason for some better showings this year
Can’t believe I’m saying this but PR and MickyMantle are right. Being knocked out of the playoffs two years in a row by the worst cat teams in about 15 years is totally unacceptable. There’s no stupid stat that can excuse that.
If I were Ken, I may offer a one-year contract on Sunday after watching the selection show, and I would remind Stitt about that once a week
