UTAH MEN'S BASKETBALL: Utes to interview Michigan State assistant coach
Jim Boylen, the top assistant to Spartans coach Tom Izzo, will interview this week

Michigan State's Jim Boylen has confirmed that he will interview this week for the vacant men's basketball coaching job at the University of Utah, while Old Dominion's Blaine Taylor did not deny that he is a candidate and might do the same. "I'm the kind of guy who's going to kind of let them do what they do" without commenting directly on the search, Taylor said.
Vacationing with his family in South Carolina after the Monarchs lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the 49-year-old former Montana coach declined to say whether he expects to interview with Utah athletic director Chris Hill in the coming days - which is what Boylen told the Detroit News he plans to do, confirming what sources told The Salt Lake Tribune last week.
"I haven't had any interaction with anybody of note, to this point," Taylor said.
Hill is searching for a coach to replace Ray Giacoletti, whom he forced to resign earlier this month after an 11-19 season. Boylen and Taylor are considered two of the top candidates, after Larry Krystkowiak last week rejected Hill's overtures in favor of becoming the head coach of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.
Hill also has received permission to interview Kent State's Jim Christian, who has not commented on his potential interest in the job.
Taylor has compiled a 118-68 record with the Monarchs, who last week lost to Butler in the first round of their second NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons under him. He played and coached at Montana under Mike Montgomery, who had been a popular candidate for the Utah job before telling Hill he was not interested in it.
Meanwhile, Boylen is the top assistant to coach Tom Izzo at MSU. That's a position that has produced several Division I head coaches, including Marquette's Tom Crean, Arkansas' Stan Heath (who preceded Christian at Kent State), Dayton's Brian Gregory, Toledo's Stan Joplin and Tulsa's Doug Wojcik.

The 41-year-old Boylen also worked in the NBA for 13 years, mostly for the Houston Rockets.
The Spartans lost to North Carolina in the second round of the tournament over the weekend, clearing Boylen's schedule for an interview in the next few days. However, the Utes might have competition for his services; Boylen is viewed by some as a candidate to replace the fired Tommy Amaker at Michigan.

I kind of wondered if his name wouldn't come up.

Would Stu Morril ever move over to the Utes?

I don't know if that is allowed in the Mormon faith. Seriously, that is a good question. Stew has a nice situation at Utah State. He is very well liked there, they get great fan support , have nice facilitites, and his teams are usually competing for the league championship. The only knock on Stew is he never has a strong schedule which has cost him at large NCAA bids more than once during his coaching tenure. He scheduled soft at Montana and Colorado State as well. I think he has proven he can coach, and he might be able to elevate recruiting if he scheduled better teams. Stew has been around a long time so there should be no reason to not have a good schedule unless he simpy doesn't want one. I don't see him being a candidate at Utah. :twocents:

Stew is fine where he is. While nothing is 100% my impression is that Stew is in that final stage of his career. He is very comfortable, and love the school and community he is in. A few years back his ideal job was #1 Utah #2 BYU or USU, but now that he is Utah and pretty much has the USU head coach as long as he wants it, don't look for him to really want to move on. He has a long term contract (4-5 years left) look for him to sign maybe a 1 or 2 year extension at most and then retire. There is not another job right now he covets.....

Just been my opinion, I think I am pretty close on this, but I have been wrong before.

Stew, interviewed the last time the Utes had a coaching vacancy. He told Chris Hill "no" at that time. He also said he is not interested this time and has no intention to interview for the Ute job.

Like was said earlier, Stew is loved in Logan. He says that USU has been very loyal to him and he is loyal to them. He runs the USU program how he wants he does all the scheduling. I have heard from multiple sources he runs the program how he wants, including scheduling (which is often critized by many, me included as being soft). Griz football fans remind me of USU basketball fans.

No one tells Stew what to do from all I have ever heard. Why should they. He runs the only consistenly successfull program USU has.

I don't think Stew would ever go to BYU. Although a member of the LDS faith, Stew is does not attened church regularly, and would probably not fit in well at BYU. He says USU will be his last job.

He says USU will be his last job.

"I plan to be here for a long, long time" as he walks off the stage to his next job.....   Just kidding. But I think I have heard every coach who is about to leave say something just like that. Not saying that Stew will, just thought it was funny.

So true grizpack, usually when they pledge thier loyalty coaches seem to have one foot out the door.

Do you think Blaine would want the Utah job? I wonder with him at ODU if he is thinking the route of coaching a mid-major on the east coast and parlaying it into a Big East or ACC coaching gig. The way his teams play there could be that chance right?

Do you think Blaine would want the Utah job?

I do, CCG. With the addition of Alford at NM I think it's gonna be a very good conf next year. (I know, not ACC or Big East) But they ended the season with 4 teams in the top 70 RPI and 6 of the 9 teams played a top 100 SOS. Sounds like a conf. to watch next year.

I have heard it is very expensive back at ODU as far as living goes. He may be better off to go to Utah for a minimal raise, with a lower living cost.

Hey Wildman, don't you have some beer to drink!

MSU asst. coach Boylen expected to be announced as the new head coach for Utah tomorrow. Also Giacaletti is an asst. at Gonzaga now.

If I remember right I believe in Boylen is a cousin of egriz's own MichGriz. I think it is a good hire for Boylen. He was a great assistant for Izzo at State and one of those good interviews on the local sports radio. His enthusiasm will be great for the Utes.
