COLLEGE BASKETBALL
ODU coach could fit Stanford well

Though no bona-fide candidates have surfaced for Stanford's men's basketball coach opening, one obvious possibility is Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor, who has a clause in his contract specifically allowing him to leave for Stanford.

Taylor said Monday that he had not spoken to any Stanford officials about the Cardinal vacancy, although it was obvious he was interested in the job.

Taylor was a Stanford assistant under Mike Montgomery from 1998 to 2001, when the Cardinal finished the seasons ranked No. 7, No. 3 and No. 2, respectively. He is familiar with Stanford's recruiting limitations, having been there when Stanford signed Casey Jacobsen, Josh Childress, Curtis Borchardt and Chris Hernandez.

He then went to Virginia's Old Dominion, which had losing records the two seasons before Taylor arrived. Taylor has just finished his seventh season at ODU, which is in the Colonial Athletic Association, and the Monarchs have won 24 games or more in three of the past four seasons and twice played in the NCAA Tournament.

Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby would not comment on which coaches might be involved in the search, laying out only general parameters.

"I expect the process will take at least another week or 10 days," he said via e-mail Monday. "Knowledge of the Pac-10 would be helpful."

Bowlsby plans to have preliminary visits with between five and 10 possible candidates.

Taylor would represent a continuation of the Montgomery lineage that extended through Trent Johnson. That might be an asset, but sometimes athletic directors think that, after a certain amount of time, a completely fresh start is in order. Plus, Bowlsby hired neither Montgomery nor Johnson and might have a different idea about what type of coach he wants to represent him and Stanford.

Elsewhere, Portland State coach Ken Bone also said he would be interested in the Stanford job. He has Pac-10 experience, having been an assistant at Washington for three years (2002-05) before turning Portland State into this season's Big Sky Conference champion, finishing 23-10.

Nevada coach Mark Fox is another name being mentioned as a possible candidate.

I immediately thought about Blaine for the Stanford gig when it opened, but I wondered if Monte's hiring at Cal might have put a damper on the enthusiasm for one of his former assistants.

local papers this morning say blaine taylor is still the frontrunner for the stanfoo job though no deal is imminent and larry brown (!)has expressed an interest in the job

also, travis decuire has left taylor at old dominion to join monty's staff at cal.

I would like to see Blaine get it. He has put in his time at ODU.

Larry Brown!?!?!?

I guess some of his other "payouts" from when he bailed or was fired from other jobs must be drying up.

A little side note regarding Blaine's contract at ODU. He has a 6 figure buyout if he leaves early, HOWEVER; he has three escape clauses, One is for an NBA job, one is to join good friend and former Oregon athletic director Bill Moos at another school and the third is to take the job at Stanford.

ODU is working on an extension, but it won't affect BT if he is offerred the Stanford job.

Stanford has offered its men's basketball job to Johnny Dawkins, and the Duke associate head coach is leaning toward accepting, sources said Saturday.

Dawkins interviewed for the job on Friday with Cardinal athletic director Bob Bowlsby.

Dawkins is in his 11th year of coaching at his alma mater. He was promoted from assistant coach after the 1998-99 season. He was named player personnel director for the USA Basketball Senior National Team in 2006.

As a player, Dawkins finished his career in 1986 as Duke's all-time leading scorer. He was a two-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and went on to play nine NBA seasons.

The Stanford job became available this month when Trent Johnson, the 2008 Pac-10 coach of the year, accepted the top position at LSU.

after all the speculation about blaine taylor, dawkins is the pick over two other finalists, doug oliver, ex of idaho state and one of trent johnson's assistants, and eric reveno, stanford grad now head coach at portland. was taylor not interested in a potential rivalry with mike montgomery, or did stanford turn away from taylor for whatever reason? since taylor seemed such a perfect fit for this job, i'd be curious to know what happened.

Ask Blaine. He has never shied away from a question. Seriously, he has a darn good thing going at ODU. He is getting another raise, and he makes about the same money as the Stanford coach does. Stanford is the lowest paying job in the Pac 10 now that WSU has stepped up to the plate to retain Bennett. Blaine will wait for the right opportunity. I think he would have much better chance for success if he could get the AZ job when Lute retires. Much easier to recruit to AZ. Former UM PG and Taylor assistant at ODU Travis Decuire is going to Cal to join Montogmery's staff though. There is an excellent audio interview on The Missoulian website (look for where are they now section) that Bill Schwanke did with Travis recently. It doesn't even sound remotely like the Travis Decuire that was at UM. He has really done well for himself, is well spoken, and has a bright future in coaching.

thanks for the tip, gb1. great read.

i'm one who grew up on griz bb, and feel the tradition of the great players and notable coaches, the zoo, the sold out crowds and the consistently winning records is on the brink of being revitalized. meantime, today's program continues to draw on that tradition, including our last two head coaches and a current assistant (duchesne) while others like decuire, leroy washington and even micheal ray continue to establish their cred in the coaching ranks. i'm glad to see the university keeping up personal links with the good ole days. there's a wellspring of talent and information to draw on.

Did you see the audio link? You can actually listen to the interviews. I am amazed at the amount of growth in TD since his playing days.
