Old Shep, a photographic tribute to a “Superfan”

His early 20’s were still his formative years. Although he never actually attended NDSU he became an ardent fan in the fall of 1971 when he saw a pretty girl wearing a NDSU jacket.

Shy, chunky and socially inept, Shep found that he was able to “fit in” with others when he wore his green afro and cheered for the Bison.

Always the joker, Shep used the same “I beat anorexia” Halloween Costume for 13 straight years, until he eventually outgrew it.

Ma always said he was “too busy for girls” with his job as assistant manager at the Bismark Radio Shack. Few people know the true dreams and fantasies that occupy Shep’s mind. Although he has never physically touched a female, besides his birth mother, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t long to. Their denial of his awkward advances only makes him that much more passionate about his beloved bison and is the motor that drives him to superfan status

Following his third heart attack, Shep temporarily slimmed down to enjoy the bison win another championship. Shep is pictured here with his best friend in the entire world, the foam #1 Finger.

Shep spends his off seasons in Ma’s basement, spreading his wealth of knowledge of North Dakota and North Dakota State Bison football by educating other fan boards. It stands to reason, if NDSU is a winner, he must be a one too! Besides Ma, It is really the only thing he has left since that 29 year-old punk from RS Corporate canned him and his cat Mr. Buffy got out of the house and ran away.

And this was just Pre-Game introduction when the GRIZ waxed your friends from the east, Northern Iowa...
Ok, I have been just observing this thread because it is pretty comical, but I really hope you're just messing with Shep by saying that was loud. It sounds like you could have a nice conversation with the person sitting next to you at a normal volume.

This video doesn't do justice to how loud this game was. Plus, the video was taken from the upper deck where the noise isn't as contained as it is down on the field. I had seats in the first row right next to the field, and you couldn't hear yourself think let alone have a conversation to the person next to you.

That makes sense, but I highly doubt Wa-Grizzly stadium is louder than the Fargodome. That's nothing against the Montana fans, it's just the fact that the Fargodome is a dome, which helps hold the noise in. From what I found on Wa-Grizzly stadium, last year in your game vs EWU, they broke the record for noise level with 111.3 decibels (http://www.nbcmontana.com/news/high...y-stadium-recorded-at-saturdays-game/22654586). That game ended up being a 5-point game, which as I'm sure you know helps get the crowd much louder. As a comparison, there was a study conducted last year at the Fargodome during NDSU's game against Furman. During that game, the decibel level reached 115, and that was a 31-point win for NDSU. Not really a lot of motivation for the fans to be loud there. http://www.noodls.com/view/7368231FB1AA1AE5E6571BC224A27097F4F23843?1564xxx1386690398

IMO, there's a huge difference in the electricity of the crowd in WGS during a day game vs a night game. EWU's was a day game. Something about those night games and tailgating all day that gets the crowd fired up even more than usual...

I thought Moglia was quoted as saying we were louder, despite being short 6-8k in fans due to 6 below temp at kickoff (whimps). Either way, we were colder.

He probably did say that. I know the Coastal Carolina QB said that Montana was louder. The crowd tends to get pretty quiet when it's 31-0 in the 2nd quarter though. Not a whole lot of motivation to be extremely loud in that situation, especially compared to the Montana game where Montana was making a comeback and was within 1 score in the 4th quarter.

Hopefully Montana can make it a decent game at least into the second half in Fargo so your fans can experience the noise themselves. ;)

117 is still louder than 115... Its obviously louder in Wa-Griz. I don't doubt that the FargoDome is loud but Wa-Griz can pack in almost 10,000 more people. That's more than half of what FargoDome can fit. Heres a couple quotes over the past few years:

http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=64552&p=923228&hilit=Tony+Romo#p923228" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After a victory over Seahawks in Seattle he was asked if he had ever experienced more noise in a stadium. His response was "Missoula Montana is way louder" - Tony Romo

"Because it's so closed in. The noise is so confined. My granddaughter got so scared in that place - she was 7 years old - she never let go of her mother for the whole first quarter." - Joe Gardi, coach

"Their atmosphere is a lot better than The Rock. Their crowd makes Michigan's 109,000 sound like mice. I promise you that there isn't another stadium in our division like Montana's stadium and fans. It was the loudest place I have ever been to in my life. Our 30K+ isn't even close to the 22,000 I heard today. The experience was awesome today." - Jerry Moore, App State Coach

" I've been to alot of places, this has gotta be tops. Reminds me of Autzen stadium in Oregon." - Todd Harris & Charles Arbuckle, ESPN announsers: App State (11-2) vs Montana (13-0) 2009

After playing at Nebraska and losing 17 - 3 loss in front of over 85,000 fans: “Coming here, we thought this would be the loudest crowd we've ever faced, but I'd say Montana was quite a bit louder.” - Thomas O'Brien, South Dakota State QB

SEC SCHOOL "I will end the discussion right now. I have played in Jordan Haire Stadium(Auburn:79k+) and @ Washington-Grizzly Stadium. It got loud at the end of the Auburn game when they scored the gw td with less than 1 minute to go in Tuberville's debut, but Montana was different. Those fans were right on top of you and i can tell you that is was louder in that "little" stadium than @ Auburn. " - App State player 2007-2010

UTENN "I have coached in stadiums all over the country in my career. Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Nebraska to name a few. All of these facilities held 80,000 to 100,000 people. None of these stadiums were as loud as the only FCS school in the country to sell more season tickets then Old Dominion, the University of Montana. What made Montana different was the fans were at their loudest when their opponent was on offense. They knew they could eliminate the offensive check system with noise. They were the 12th defender on the field by making the offense predictable. And they took great pleasure in every penalty the visiting team received. They knew that was their penalty !! " - Bobby Wilder, ODU Head Coach

The 117 wasn't confirmed. That was from people on their own devices. NDSU has had people claim they have seen 130+ decibels on their own devices, and 130 is louder than 117. However, I wanted to go with confirmed numbers, which is why I chose the 115 and 111.3. Based on confirmed numbers, NDSU reached 115 decibels in a blowout, and Montana reached 111.3 in a very close game.

Actually, the fans do become MUCH more quiet during a blowout. Are you telling me that in Wa-Grizzly stadium, it was just as loud last year during the OK Panhandle State game as it was during the Coastal Carolina game?

+1. I find it funny how fans of teams who play in a dome compare their noise level to that of a team who's stadium is open. Of course your stadium is going to be loud, you've got a roof trapping that noise.

A lot of Bison fans pride themselves in the fact that their stadium is so loud... but take that roof off, and the noise level drops considerably. Montana fans can pride themselves in the fact that we can make just as much noise if not more in our stadium without the aid of a roof overhead.

I've heard the same about Wa-Griz. I've heard of 130+ there as well. It makes a difference when you've got a roof. The noise in the buffalo stables isn't gonna bother our boys. Trust me.

This is exactly it. I don't get why you guys are so sensitive about the Fargodome being louder. It doesn't indicate in any way that the NDSU fans are better than the Montana fans. It's all about the acoustics of having a roof. Of course if you took the roof off, it would be a lot quieter, but that's a ridiculous point to try to use, because the roof is there. That would be like a team from the south coming up to play in Wa-Grizzly stadium in the winter and saying, yeah, it might be cold, but if you enclosed the stadium and installed heaters, it would be a lot warmer. That sounds pretty dumb, doesn't it.

I'm not saying the NDSU fans are better than the Montana fans. I'm saying the acoustics of having a roof, which the Fargodome has, makes it a lot easier for it to become loud. You could adjust the layout of Wa-Grizzly stadium to make it a lot quieter as well, but the layout is what it is, and that helps your stadium become loud as well. Obviously, it is impressive that it can get almost as loud at Wa-Grizzly stadium as in the Fargodome, but again, that doesn't really say a lot about your fans. It says that the acoustics of your stadium assist in holding in the noise. Obviously your fans need to make some noise for it to be loud, just like the fans in the Fargodome need to make some noise for it to be loud in the Fargodome, but it's more about the acoustics than the fans.

Oh yea.....well we have Monte so stick that in you're pipe and smoke it. This game will be won/lost in the trenches not the stands.
