Biggest Hoops rival?

I know you guys consider MSU to be your biggest football rivalry, but who do you guys consider your biggest hoops rival?

Great question. Maybe a reflection of where a person is in the lineage of Griz basketball. If you come to the program recently, I am not sure how it ranks.

Weber State is the flagship basketball program in the Big Sky. They have been the most consistent over teh years, and because Montana rarely has been horrid in basketball those games have mattered a bit more. The rivalry aspect has picked up recently because of how good both programs have been over the past four or five years.

That hasn't always been the case for MSU and UofM. Those games always have an instate rivalry feel, but even much of that has dissapated in the last decade or so. Went to a MSU game before I left Montana and there were 4,000 people at the game. I know that has changed in recent years, but the punch of the game is gone. Definately not 80's with LK, Ferch Brothers, Damako, McGowan and so forth. That Montana flavor of the game is a gonner.

I think my understanding of the rivalry is as much as a reflection of where UofM basketball is now. Nostaligcally, I think MSU is probably 1 and Weber State is 1A. Yet, in terms of current relevance Weber State over the past four or five years has held more value as a basketball game.

Weber State is the biggest on a pure basketball sense. We hate the cats, and they are in state, so they are probably getting the nod. I compare ourselves to Weber for quality basketball year in and year out.

There was a period of time where the answer to that question would have been a no-brainer: Idaho.

But now I'd still say MSU, although the Weber games lately have had far larger implications.

In any event unfortunately, neither stirs anything even approaching the passion of playing the cats in football.

From the fans perspective it is Montana State without question. All you have to do is look at the attendance figures. I would agree that WSU has grown into a good basketball rivalry in terms of competition and I'm sure if you asked the players about which game they get up for the most it would probably be WSU.

Agree with this. I think we want to beat Weber every year to win the BSC.

I would rather watch us play Weber and I don't have trouble with us losing to a good team like Weber.
But I hate losing to the cats no matter how good they are, thus that is a bigger rivarly for me.
