Big Sky vs PAC12 TV Deals

Found it interesting to see a comparison between what the Big Sky has for a TV deal with ESPN vs what the PAC12 has with CBS (and CW + ESPN) in 2025. The PAC12 has a little better deal with multiple TV outlets, but still impressive thought that the Big Sky is able to get four games on an ESPN linear network.

BIG SKY TV DEAL (ESPN)
  • Minimum of four regular-season football games on ESPN linear
  • Minimum of two regular-season football games on ESPN or ESPN2
  • All other regular-season games available on ESPN+
PAC12 TV DEAL (CBS SPORTS, CW, ESPN)
  • Annual football championship game on CBS and Paramount+
  • Minimum of three regular-season games on CBS and Paramount+
  • All other games throughout regular season on CBS Sports Network
  • CW will televise 9 PAC12 games
  • ESPN will televise two PAC12 games (Cal @ Oregon State, Houston @ Oregon State)
  • CBS will televise two PAC12 games (WSU @ Washington, Oregon State @ WSU)
 
CBS is the only long term deal the PAC has signed. CW and ESPN are only for this season unless they decide to submit offers for future years. I suspect CW and ESPN will likely both be interested for the long term. Outside of LIV Golf, CW really doesn't have anything going for themselves, and ESPN will likely be interested in late night games bringing back PAC After Dark. Now that Texas State is on board, there should be announcements on the other media partners coming soon.

That said, for an FCS conference, I really like our TV deal with ESPN.

And if we're being honest, the only reason that the Big Sky and Missouri Valley have a TV contract with ESPN is 100% because of Montana/Montana State and NDSU/SDSU.

And yet the bsc mandates that one of the precious few games they have to showcase their product doesn't include them. Only in bsclogicland does that even remotely make sense.

I mean Vanderbilt got a couple games on ESPN last year. One of which was against Virginia Tech. Should the SEC start preventing Vanderbilt and Missouri from getting any games on ESPN? I'm fine with the Big Sky giving one game to other teams, especially since that game is likely always gonna go to Idaho and it's always gonna be on a Friday night. I think most people here would be pissed if the Griz had to play multiple Friday night games. It's not that big of a deal IMO. It's not like they're picking UNC vs. PSU. I have no issue with it.

Yes, but who did Vandy play in those games? Also every SEC game can be found on network television so it's obviously an apples to cumquats comparison. The bsc gets 4 games. Does it not make sense for them to show the 4 best match-ups? Why have a rule that prohibits that?

The point is that the bsc should make the best decision for their conference by showing their best games and highlighting their best programs (you know, the ones that make them the vast majority of their revenue). And they rarely if ever do. It's the bsc way.

I nailed it...you are so wordy. Thing is, you assume UM/MSU are in a leverage position but they aren't. BSC is doing what the majority dictates.

I'm happy for them that they were able to rebuild their conference, but wow, that list is sure underwhelming compared to the heyday of PAC-10/12 sports

I don't mind it either NAU is one of the more interesting venues. I have ESPN+ so I get all the Griz games regardless but ESPN is more likely to be on at a local bar. It is kind of interesting how one of the games is at Sac State when they are leaving the conference. I would have preferred Griz at Weber for example so we are not giving coverage to Sac but oh well.

well it will be a damage to their reputation as a perennial powerhouse Suck State to lose on national tv. BSC is saying goodbye on national tv

I would argue those are the 4 best matchups outside of the Brawl.

My opinion, even if the BSC did everything to highlight UM/MSU, the BSC conference would still just be the BSC. They have no where to go, they are stuck in the mud and there is no lifeline. The grass isn't greener letting UM/MSU dictate.

Oh, absolutely. It's still the bsc after all. But if you have the ugliest house on the block, it still helps some if you mow your lawn.

This isn’t true. The biggest draws in the SEC, Alabama and Georgia, had five of their games shown only on the SEC network. I didn’t bother looking at the rest but I’m sure they have a lot more.
