Wow, what do you think of this?

North Dakota State enters the 2013 campaign on top of the Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection. The Bison rule the range again after leading the entire 2012 regular season and winning its second straight title. Conference mate Northern Iowa is solid in second.

The Big Sky Conference has five teams in the top 25; the Colonial Athletic Association, Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Southland Conference have four each; the Ohio Valley Conference has three; the Southern Conference has two; and the Big South Conference, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Patriot League and Independents have one each. (Games through 9/29/13)

For conference average rankings, the Missouri Valley Football Conference is in first with the Southland Conference and the Colonial Athletic Association at two and three. The Ohio Valley and Big Sky Conferences round out the top five.

Its been about 40 year since I last took statistics but I remember enough enough to know that their methodology of getting to to their "total" makes absolutely no sense. Sounds like they are trying to grade on the curve.................

:? Umm, credibility of the GPI just took a hit since ODU is an FBS independent this year...

Been longer for me, but if this is a main indicator, it is what it is. It isn't a total if you look at the formula it is an average, just named wrong.

Total = (ARC + 2 polls used)/7
ARC (Adjusted Rankings of the Computers) = Sum of 5 computer ranking numbers (removing the max and min number from the 7 used)

Take of the Top take off the bottom to get the ARC add the polls and average it. That's grading on the curve. Except for very Top the rest are all very similar look at the range of scores. If it used for "seeding" the top 15 are the only ones with significantly higher gross scores. The rest are pretty darn close an can be chosen pretty much at will or in the case of "seeding" based on and justified by anything

So all in all its pretty smart the "at larges" can be chosen at will...........

Much like BCS according to what I read. Give it a couple more weeks and it gets interesting. Hope the big sky doesn't beat the crap out of each other and end with 3 teams with 3 losses at the top. That will not be good with a low conference rating

60 SF Austin 2-3
71 Monmouth INDEP 2-3
72 Appalachian St 1-3
87 North Dakota 1-3

My question is how is North Dakota at 87? Seems they should be more towards the bottom (lowest 127) than that.

Because the Poll ratings which account for about 1/3 of the score don't go any lower than 26 Their assumption is if you are not in the top 25 you are ranked 26

That is correct but it is the same for all of the bottom teams. So there are teams that are not as good as UND hard to believe, as I have seen them play two games in person. Valparaiso is rated below them, and that was UND's win.
