MBBALL Big Sky Progress (Feb 12,14)

Besides another Griz-Cats meeting, the most interesting feature of the coming week is the fact that two of the top contenders will spend it on the road.

Of course, the Vikings get to visit two conference bottom-feeders, so the probability of upsets seems pretty low. Weber, however, will be at two mid-level opponents. A split would probably be a good result for them.

Sac State also visits the bottom-feeders, so they have a chance to move up a bit. Idaho State visits two mid-level opponents, so a split would be a big deal for them … of course, except for Bengal fans, who really cares?

Portland State (10-1) … @ NAU … @ NoColo
Montana State (8-4) …bye … @ UM
Montana (8-4) … bye … MSU
Weber State (6-6) … @ Idaho … @ EWU
Idaho (5-6) … WSU … ISU
Eastern Wash (5-6) … ISU … WSU
Sac State (5-6) … @ NoColo … @ NAU
No Colorado (5-7) … Sac State … PSU
Idaho State (3-9) … @ EWU … @ Idaho
No Arizona (3-9) … PSU … Sac State

Big Sky today:

Sac State (5-6) @ NoColo (5-7) … 4:00
Portland State (10-1) @ NAU (3-9) … 6:00
Weber State (6-6) @ Idaho (5-6) … 7:00
Idaho State (3-9) @ EWU (5-6) … 7:00

On the records, the games at Northern Colorado and Idaho look the most competitive. Beyond that, I do not consider it out of the question that the Bengals could upset EWU … the Eagles have been so inconsistent. Not seeing much hope at NAU … but stranger things have already happened this year.

Don't know if I recorded it wrong or it was rescheduled: Sac State at Northern Colorado has just started.

FWIW: Both home teams ahead at the half, including NAU 29-32 over PSU (not likely to hold up, but there it is).

Pretty much as expected: NoColo won handily and PSU over NAU (closer than expected ... only 9 points).

Decent leads (Weber and EWU, but time left.

With the Montana schools Idle and both Portland and Weber winning, no change at the top. Lots of stirring around in the bottom half, however. Tomorrow should be interesting.

Mid-afternoon starts a full slate of Big Sky games. Aside from the Griz game (which I’ll leave to its own thread), the most competitive would seem to be Weber at EWU. A win by the Eags would not at all surprise me. That would tighten things up in middle of the standings. Then, if NoColo pulled off an amazing upset, we’d have three 7-win teams in that middle block. Too many games left to get serious, but we’ll soon be able to start thinking about tournament seedings.

Portland State (11-1) @ NoColo (6-7) … 2:00
Idaho State (3-10) @ Idaho (5-7) … 3:00
Weber State (7-6) @ EWU (6-6) … 3:00
Sac State (5-7) @ NAU (3-10) … 6:00
Montana State (8-4) @ UM (8-4) … 7:00

(Weak) upset alert: NoColo leads PSU 66-59 with just under 4 min left. Plenty of time for the Vikes to come back.

Visitors at Idaho and EWU getting pounded at halftime.

It was indeed an “interesting” week of basketball. The top three teams split their games and remained pretty much the same, although the Griz dropped out of a tie for #2. Weber also split, and took a hit, dropping two spots (from #4 to 6).

The big gainers were, naturally, the two that won both of their games. Eastern Washington moved from #6 to 4, while Northern Colorado went from #8 to 5.

As I recall, the only (small) advantage in the seeds for the conference tournament goes to the top two … they get to face the two survivors of the four-team opening round among the bottom-feeders. Seeds 3 and 4 face mid-level opponents in their first games.
