Big Sky Preview

Hi all,

I come around here every so often, but in case you don't know, I write a blog on the Big Sky. Every year, I like to go long-winded with my preview, in this case totaling 13K words. If you are interested in reading (probably in parts!), check out the link here -

Thanks! Let me know what you think, or if you have any thoughts or questions....

Terrific preview, hard to dispute any of it. Offensively, the GRIZ will be better this season. I too thought they would struggle offensively, but after watching their exhibition games, Travis changed my tune. They move the ball well, penetrate well, create well for others, a lot of terrific perimeter shooters, better inside game, and not one black hole. They all pass well. Breunig reminds me of a bigger Mathias Ward, with a better inside game. Breunig can handle the ball and a solid passer as well. Breunig has the game and athleticism of a true big SF. DeCuire likes fast temp, uptempo might be an understatement. The GRIZ/EWU game will be crazy wild.

I won't be surprised to see the GRIZ average over 80 PPG, and shoot over 38% from 3 this season. Overall FG% should be over 45%. Defensively, they will create a lot of turnovers. I am sure they will have a few stinker games, but they are already ahead of where I thought they would be. I was very impressed with their offensive and defensive continuity in the 2 exhibition games. GO GRIZ!!!!!

yo, jon! so i'm a gem--just as my mom said. i read every word of your preview. i like that you always balance the positives with the negatives, and find something good about every team. extremes always hide the truth, and this is a balanced, well-researched analysis, with no bias--and your very own team ranked near the bottom. that's objective reporting.

we often let petty rivalries blind us to what's good for the entire conference--and your reporting is great for big sky basketball. a rising tide lifts all boats, and this is a conference that can use any lift it can get. i am personally happy when any other school gets a great recruit, because it raises the quality of the conference, and increases our national profile. and i love your blog, because you bring the same passion to big sky basketball that you see in the acc, or other basketball hotbeds around the country. keep up the good work!

i'm excited about our griz, and our prospects under decuire. i think we have a guy who will emerge as a major coach in a short time. his hiring of ken bone as an assistant was a huge clue to me, because other rookie coaches might not have had the confidence to hire a guy who had such extensive head coaching experience, especially in the pac 12. but i know from business, great hires can take you on a magic carpet ride.

our griz are young--nine of 13 players are freshmen or sophomores. our weakness, beyond inexperience, is the lack of a piano mover in the paint, because it's going to be tough to deal with a guy like bolomboy, or the big kid at sac state. i think decuire will counter that with faster play, more ball movement, and quicker shots. so i'm looking forward to the season, and your excellent analysis only whets the appetite.
