I'd take Bignell in a heart beat, but am not impressed with Newell. We have better RBs than Newell.

What doesn't "impress" you about him. Not explosive enough?

Probably just wants to contradict another post. He is all into makeup sex.

He's still got a year, he might really have a huge year. But speaking generally, I agree with you. That's a high bar though, he runs angry and plays with a lot of fire, even though he's a cat I loved watching the way he played in last years Brawl. Wish he was in maroon.

Agreed. When the rest of the cats were done Newell was trying, singlehanded, to win that game. Big motor, tons of heart.

Yeah anyone willing to pound into multiple defenders every time after the battle is lost deserves respect.

I'm counting an extra running back and receiver on the All-BSC offense. And an extra linebacker on defense. Are we going to 13 on 12 this season? Seems to put the defense at even more of a disadvantage in a league where defense wasn't a particular focus many Saturday's. Is it possible that Stitt uses both extra offensive spots on receiver? That would get him up to 6 or 7, depending on the formation/play, which sounds optimal. Maybe with 7 receivers running patterns, it would be difficult to overthrow everyone? But on the other hand, with 7 receivers on any given play, I think we might still be short players for the rotation. Perhaps a couple of two-way players, or those guys trying out for kicker to fill in the gap? And maybe since we seem to have a glut of guys @ safety, maybe use the extra linebacker spot there instead.

Will this just be for conference games? Puts us @ a disadvantage versus teams like UNI if so. But with that many folks, we might be able to legitimately hang a hundo on state ag in November. Perhaps this should have been an ask CDA question. Never mind.

I love Newell. Great kid. A leader, a hard worker, a guy you want in your foxhole. I also love how much he shed a completely different light on the "rivalry" last year when he spoke about his friendships off the field with Gus and other Griz players. I couldn't have been more impressed by that in particular. He wasn't afraid to speak publicly about that topic, right as the 2015 Griz-Cat week reached a fever pitch and fan hatred was at its yearly high.

Just a great, great kid, and a hell of a football player. And a deserved honor to be named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Having said all that, I love the running backs the Griz have in their stable right now, and with Rey Green, the future looks really good.

Should piss off our new built O-Line that none of them were mentioned. Maybe it will be enough to really spark their play...Our O-Line is the key to offense success!

I had to laugh at your post. I can not remember a single year when UM didn't have AT LEAST one All-Big Sky o-lineman. the people making up this list obviously saw our O-line play last season, and the fact that all of them return means that none of them are All-Conference. Here's a news flash. Gaining 20 lbs. does not create a great O-linemen from a weak one.

I predict that at least two starters from last season will lose their starting jobs, either in fall camp or by Game 3.

I have to laugh out loud that you don't the difference between Preseason, as voted by the media, and Big Sky All-Conference at the end of the season, as voted by the coaches. Where, in 2015, the Griz did indeed have TWO OFFENSIVE LINEMAN who were named Big Sky All-Conference.

I predict in December, when the actual All-Conference teams are announced, the Griz will have THREE ALL-CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN? Wanna bet?

If I'm not mistaken, the illustrious Skyline Sports Preseason All Big Sky Team is chosen each year by a prestigious 6 member committee during a July weekend in Bozeman. The committee includes Colon Nuance and a fifth of Maker's Mark.

This list is actually from the Big Sky Conference. Skyline Sports does theirs separately. All guys on the list are deserving so shouldn't really matter.

Maybe...except for your running back.

Chad Newell isn't deserving?

Ok then what other BSC back should be ahead of him this preseason?

Every one Raider...every back...all the backs.

You have got to be kidding me!

With all your inane pontificating about MT high school recruits, Newell is actually one example you could have used for a kid the Griz didn’t offer and should have. Ironically, you are "not impressed".

This post alone shows how disconnected and uninformed you are regarding MT high school players.
Do me a favor. Ask one of your mythical “Griz coach buddies” what they think of Chad Newell.

Newell is 100% over-rated. He was the benefit of a great multiple offense with the threat of the QB running the ball on every play, thus occupying much of what the defense was trying to stop. When Newell is the "supposed" offensive stud this fall, and teams focus on him, you will see how pedestrian he is. If Newell played for NAU, PSU, Sac. State, or really any other offense, you would never hear of him again. He will get plenty of carries this season to pad his numbers because the Cats have little else to offer, but he is not that good. Stop being an ass wipe about me knowing college coaches. I know them, but don't waste their time trying to pry football info from them like you, Wally, and Playa Rape do. I treat them like equals, instead of Gods like you and your buddies, and love beating them in golf.

OK, big guy, we'll see how wonderful your Cat RB is in the fall. There is a reason is was not offered coming out of high school, and he will demonstrate that this season without Prukop occupying defensive coordinator's energy. I will be proven right once again.

Book marked****

But, don't sweat it......
It will only be about the 2398th time you've been proven wrong this year?

Bye the way.......What type of hand gun are you packin' this week?

I'd say this falls in the category of topics that aren't worth arguing about.

He wasn't offered out of high school because of a knee injury his junior season. As far as him not being productive, that is an incorrect statement. Against SDSU in the playoffs two years ago, everyone knew Dakota was playing on one leg. Chad Newell was the main focus and he rushed for 101 yards, 5 tds, and had 42 yards receiving. Again, Dakota was not a running threat in that game so that argument can't be used. When he is given his carries, he produces...every time.

Another game that year, Jake Bleskin starts against Idaho State and Chad rumbles off 101 yards rushing, 21 yards receiving and a touchdown.

I can keep listing off games but I'm going to stop. MSU's offense could have actually done itself a favor against NAU last year and kept giving Chad the ball, as we were rolling on the ground in the first half. But then we wanted to get cute and started to run our usual gimmick plays with Dakota.

Do I think there are other productive running backs who could've been listed over Chad? Yes, absolutely. But there is also a long list of arguments why he deserves first team.

Good post. One of Chad's high-school coaches is a former Griz and a good friend of mine. He was very disappointed that UM did not pursue Newell.

All of this is moot. Dillboy is again talking out of both sides of his lying mouth about a MT high school recruit, and now he is trying to spin it like he always does. It's laughable how different his opinion of Brekke and Newell is, given the difference in how they have actually performed.

Again, pathetic

Anyone who thinks Chad Newell is "100% overrated" is a moron.

And Growler points out if Newell played for other teams we'd see how pedestrian (or whatever) he is. One of those teams he listed was NAU. If NAU had Chad Newell with the additional talent they'd finish as one of the best teams in the FCS. Imagine trying to defend an offense that can beat a team in so many ways...

I agree but regarding Gunnar, here is how I feel on his career. I'm still angry he wasn't redshirted his true freshman year. On top of that, Gunnar and Chad have gotten less carries over the past two years because of Dakota's tendency to keep the ball more times than not. Chad gets most of the inside runs and Gunnar gets the outside carries. In reality though, if Dakota didn't keep the ball himself, he would give it to Chad who would plow into the line for 3 yards and a cloud of dust so he got more carries. Gunnar has been used as more of a scat back in Cramsey's offense so he was more of a receiver. Not to make excuses here but I don't get too shook up about Gunnar's stats because he has only been really playing for two years and he was part of an offense that really only featured its QB. And like Chad, Gunnar has been productive, especially in the return and passing game, when called upon. He has shown his explosiveness on numerous occasions over the past two years and his yards per touch are actually pretty darn good. Just too bad he is a 4 year senior this year and not a redshirt junior. Regardless, he still has been a vital part of our offensive success over the past two years.

2015
Played in only 9 games (concussion)

63 carries for 292 - 1 TD
22 receptions for 353 - 2 TDs

645 yards and 3 TDs

2014
Played in all 13 games

75 carries for 424 - 4 TDs
21 receptions for 204 - 2 TDs

628 yards and 6 TDs

27 returns for 732 yards (average of 27 yds per return)

2013
19 carries for 67
3 receptions for 19

Didn't even have a return because Shawn Johnson was the guy so he basically just played on a few special team units and got 22 snaps on offense...most in garbage time. Thank you Rob Ash.

(SHOULD HAVE REDSHIRTED!)
