Big Sky MVP Discussion

Gallatin Griz

I thought there was already a post on this but I looked back a couple pages of posts and didn't see the obvious where it would be. Here are my questions:

Will BQ be named BSC MVP?

Will BQ be named BSC MVP and Defensive MVP?

He is currently ranked in the top 3 in conference for 6 different statistical categories that the BSC tracks:
Rebounding - 1st
Blocked Shots - 1st
Defensive Rebounds - 1st
Field Goal % - 2nd
Offensive Rebounds - 2nd
Scoring - 3rd

Your thoughts?

MVP will be Qvale or Beitzel depending on who ends up winning the regular season title and hosts the tourney.

I think you're probably right. Being biased, I'd give it to BQ, no matter what. Beitzel's good though, I admit that, and very important to the success of his team.

I love BQ's play, but honestly feel that Beitzel is the MVP this year despite which team wins the regular season. It's hard to pick between the two.

Maybe I'm basing my opinion too much on what I saw from both of them in Ogden (Beitzel was very impressive, Qvale was not), but if I had a vote it would definitely go to Beitzel. I just think Beitzel is much more important to his team than Qvale is to his. Qvale has more talent around him.

Disagree, UNC has a full team back from last year, and UM...not so much.

While the griz are more talented i think the players around Beitzel compliment him much better than that of BQ. usually when BQ plays bad its because we cant hit a perimeter shot to break up the double or triple team surrounding him. Beitzel is surrounded by a bunch of senior shooters and therefore has a lot of driving lanes and more opportunities. If BQ had 1/3 the shooters NC has hed be averaging over twenty and probably shooting a better %. Beitzel doesnt have to fight near as hard to get the ball. Oh and if BQ is averaging 3 blocks a game he is altering 12-15.

Either would be a good choice because Beitzel is a heck of a player and gave us fits in Greeley... but i think BQ deserves it. We just dont see big men like him come through the big sky. maybe every 10 or 15 years. we see guards like beitzel about every year.

No offense to Beitzel, but Qvale has had to overcome much more to get his stats than Bietzel has. As for comparing how the 2 played wherever, you have not seen the GRIZ when Qvale has been on the bench due to foul trouble.

You also have not seen most every opponent double team and completely collapse the paint on Qvale. To be honest, the numbers he has put up is quite impressive for all the attention defenses pay to him. Defensively, the GRIZ struggle more without Cherry and/or Qvale. They both make the GRIZ defense the best in the conference.

Qvale's impact on the GRIZ is much more than Bietzel's on UNC. Qvale's defense alone seperates him in this category. BTW, for Bietzel or any guard to impact his team defensively the way Qvale has, that guard would need to be averaging better than 3 steals per game, and outright shutting down opponent's guards.

Offensively and leadership are Bietzel's strong suits. Defensively, he is solid, but an average defender in this conference. MVP is Qvale, in my opinion, but it will be a close race.

Beitzel is an excellent player and I'd love to have him on my team. But Qvale brings more to the table.

Beitzel is tops in the league in scoring, but Qvale is No. 3. The only other category where Beitzel shows up in the top 10 is steals, where he is tied for No. 5.

Qvale leads the league in rebounding and blocks. He set the record for career blocks, and may well set the record for blocks in a single season.

He might well be the defensive MVP, as well as one of the top scorers. He forces teams to alter their offensive schemes...and their defensive schemes, for that matter.

A year ago, I don't know that I would have taken Qvale over Beitzel, but this year I would.

Both Beitzel and Qvale have done a lot of great this this year. I'd have to go with Qvale though. He's such a presence on defense out there too. As grizonbob pointed out, Qvale leads the league in rebounding and blocks, and is #3 in scoring. That's pretty damn impressive.

Beitzel on the other hand has done a great job becoming the scorer UNC needed after they lost Will Figures (SR last year who led them in scoring).

I think wbtfg is right...if the Griz host the tournament, Qvale will be MVP. If UNC does, Beitzel will. I'm still pissed AJ didn't win it last year.. I guess he showed everyone in the Big Sky tourney why he deserved it :D

Big Sky MVP - Brian Qvale
Big Sky Defensive player of the year - Will Cherry
Big Sky newcomer of the year - Scott Bamforth
Big Sky Freshman of the year - Byron Fulton
Big Sky coach of the year - Wayne Tinkle

Strangely enough a Montana/Weber sweep

But I can see them giving Beitzel MVP and Qvale Defensive Player of the Year, the other 3 remain the same.

...it all comes down to tonite...brian showz up...
...with hiz strength..leadership..an dominance...
...the griz win the conference..game set match...
...not taking anything away from the weber kid...

... 8-) ...

As far as I am concerned, Bamforth gets Montana's play of the year too. His game winning shot against UNC shifted momentum in favor of the GRIZ. If not for that shot, we would be looking up at UNC. Hard to remember a shot/play that impacted conference standings more than his shot.

No matter what Bamforth does after his playing days, he will be one of few BSC players, I always remember.

I'd still go with Beitzel for BSC MVP. Too many easy games and must win games for the Griz to have taked control of the BSC and they just fizzled completely. Too many high and lows without much consistency. The consistent one was Northern Colorado; undefeated at home (12 - 0) this year. That has to count for something and Beitzel is their best player. Without him, what? Qvale for Defensive Player.

Losing to EWU on the road where they were 7 - 6 at home at the time, 8 - 19 at the time, really hurt. That was a game where a real BSC MVP would have taken control and led his team to a victory; didn't happen. Qvale leading his team in scoring at a 14.4 avg., only came up with 12 pts and 5 rbs.

And all this before I found out who actually won.
