In the tough MV conference, South Dakota is 5th in Scoring Defense and 6th in Total Defense. Out of 11 in the conference. The SD defense is fairly solid. SD is only 3-6.

NW St has now won some games and is 4-5.

Here's where we are offensively vs. where we were last year:

Stat - 2021 rank - 2022 rank
Total Offense - 63rd - 53rd
Scoring Offense - 39th - 15th
Passing Offense - 48th - 64th
Rushing Offense - 70th - 40th
Passing Efficiency - 54th - 52nd

Some more food for thought, MSU's defensive rankings from 2021 to 2022:

Total Defense - 14th -> 56th
Rushing Defense - 36th -> 42nd
Passing Efficiency Defense - 18th -> 57th
Scoring Defense - 6th -> 61st :?

Whoops, this is nationally, not just conference :oops:

If only we had a serviceable backup QB….with that D we’d be undefeated.

That's the most frustrating thing. We were SO close to beating both Sac and Weber. All we needed was a half decent backup qb. Wouldn't even have to be a world beater, just someone who could move the offense down the field.

Would have taken more than that to win the Idaho game. Just a very bad day against a surprisingly good opponent. No longer a rival....

Yes, it would have.

Your post made me think of the parallels between this team and the 2001 team. They finished 15-1 with the loss coming to Hawaii. That season also included 2 conference wins that required OT - one of which was against Idaho (I think). Sometimes the difference is just razor thin - this year those close games didn't favor the Griz.

Idaho - no longer a rival? Sarcasm?

I can remember a LOT of games in Bobby's first tenure where if even one things breaks the other way, we lose, especially between 06-08. The 23-1 conference record was very close to being something like 18-6 with a few things going against us.

As for Idaho rivalry, until we lost that game to them, it didn't feel like a rivalry. Anyone younger than 30 does not remember them as a rival at all. I'm hoping this Eck turnaround lights a little fire under it, because they very much should be our #2 rival.

Given that the word is Johnson was sick as a dog, I’m not sure about that. A healthy Johnson or a serviceable backup and that game might have gone differently as well. But, we’ll never know.

"Sick as a dog," but play anyway.
Ugh.

The 2001 game against Idaho was not a conference game, it was nonconference game as they were an FBS (I-A) team at that time… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Montana_Grizzlies_football_team

Or our #1 rival. Idaho now leads series 30-56-2. Little Brown Stein. Dominated us this year. So only fans under 30 matter?

Cleaning up your data, in '06-'09, Griz were 32-1 against BSC teams. The only loss at Weber in '08 was soundly avenged in the playoffs.

Regular Season Wins With a Margin of 7 Or Less:
'06 (5)
'07 (3)
'08 (3)
'09 (4)

Now what was your point?

I’m genuinely confused why you’re upset with my post. We’re essentially saying the same thing about those old games. I also never said anything about older fans, just that younger fans don’t have any reason to consider Idaho a rival because we haven’t played them in sports for the majority of their lifetime. Hopefully closer games makes it feel more like a rivalry for them, too.

:lol: No kidding Kem...the point was close games happen all the time...even during Championship runs. Sheesh.
