Big Sky Con strength of schedule

Decided to try and do a strength of schedule rankings for the Big Sky. Had to get a little creative with a point system based of this years rankings. I grouped the Big Sky into 4 tiers based off the polls and what little knowledge I have of the teams. Feel free to critique exept all the naysayers that don't think the Griz are a tier 1 team.
tier 1
-Eastern Washington
-Montana State
-Montana
-Cal Poly
tier 2
-Idaho State
-Northern Arizona
tier 3
-Sacramento State
-Southern Utah
-Portland State
tier 4
-North Dakota
-Weber State
-UC Davis
-Northern Colorado

It may look like a lot but the point system really isn't too complex. One thing that will skew the rankings is teams that play ranked FBS teams. I figure those games should be unwinable if the FBS teams show up so I made those kind of high. Obviously 0 pts for any D2 and tier 4 teams played at home. It's not a perfect system(yes it is) but its just for fun any way.
vs D2-0pts
vs tier 4 BSC/home-0pts
vs tier 4 BSC/road-1pt
vs tier 3 BSC/home-1pt
vs tier 3 BSC/road-2pts
vs tier 2 BSC/home-2pts
vs tier 2 BSC/road-3pts
vs tier 1 BSC/home-3pts
vs tier 1 BSC/road-4pts
vs UM/EWU road-5pts
vs bottom half FCS/home-1pts
vs bottom half FCS/road-2pts
vs top half FCS/home-2pts
vs top half FCS/road-3pts
vs top 25 FCS/home-3pts
vs top 25 FCS/road-4pts
vs top 15 FCS/home-4pts
vs top 15 FCS/road-5pts
vs top 5 FCS/home-5pts
vs top 5 FCS/road-6pts
vs bottom half FBS-5pts
vs top half FBS-7pts
vs ranked FBS-10pts

Schedule rank and team followed by overall schedule points and conference scheduled points. Once in the schedule's of each team, the first column is conference ranking(tier rank for each BSC team). The second column is their national rank if applicable and the third column is how many points the game is worth.

Cal Poly has the hardest schedule the 1st half of the year followed by the easiest schedule the second half. Their first six games are against ranked opponents, including a ranked FBS foe. They also play at Montana, Montana St, and Eastern Washington. They will have to go at least 2-2 against their first four BSC opponents if they want a chance at winning the con.

On the road vs Oregon, Northern Iowa, Idaho St, and Montana plus Montana St, Cal Poly, and NAU at home all while breaking in a new QB and trying to find a defence. Should be a interesting year in Cheany.

Playing the Mtn West top to bottom in their 3rd and 4th games. Getting Eastern and the Montanas at home helps. Scheduling a D-2 school probably kept them from the tuffest sched. Time to prove how legit they are.

A good balance but a tuff schedule for a team that almost wasn't gonna play this year. Both Montanas at home but Idaho St, Cal Poly, and Eastern Wash on the road with two lower level FBS schools on the docket. If the Viqueens survive the sched, it could be the rebirth of a good PSU team.

The tuffest schedule without an FBS opponent(although some could argue NDSU plays at that level). A ruff first month and last month with a cupcake schedule through oct. Getting NDSU, Cal Po, NAU, and E Wash at home helps. At Lib, Idaho St, and MSU will be tuff road games. If Stitt and co get some big wins, I see is regaining our BSC dominance.

Another team with a soft middle stretch sandwiched between two tuff stretches. Starting the year mostly on the road against SFA, Mont, and FBS Ari. Finishing the year on the road against E Wash and S Utah and getting Sac St at home. Somehow, no matter how good NAU is though, they always seem to lose a game they should win. Could be Sac St this year which would be very costly at the end of the year.

Good balance throughout for Weber. Tuff start on the road for two unwinable games and visiting Mont, NAU, and E Wash will be very tuff. Getting Sac St, S Utah, and Idaho St at home will help and they'll need it.

One of the tuffer conference schedules. Playing at Cal Po, NAU, and MSU and getting Idaho St and E Wash at home will all be challenging games for a team replacing their leader at QB.

Easily the easiest schedule of any of the top BSC teams thanx largely to the OOC games. Sure they play E Wash but the other two are a D2 school and an FCS independent that is feilding a team for the first time. The con sched is a little tuffer with games at NAU, PSU, and Idaho St. Home games against Cal Po, Sac St, and of course the brawl. Loses to Idaho St(the Big Human wants this soooo badly) and Mont in Nov will solidify Ash's teams rep and probably cost him his job if it keeps them from the playoffs.

Now getting to the teams with the cup cake con schedules. They at least have two FBS teams on the sched but in con the tuffest road game is at Sac St. At home they got Mont, NAU, and Cal Po but mostly it's on the easy side.

Good rebuilding sched here. OOC has Utah St and South Dakota St but once in con, the tuff road game is at MSU. At home they get Cal Po and NAU.

Who ever made this schedule didn't think much of N Col. OOC consists of a D2 and two lowly Southland teams. Once in con, they have to suffer on the road against NAU and at home they get E Wash. If they finish above last place, the schedule will be why.

I don't like any SOS that includes a play-up game. Those artificially inflate any teams schedule, no matter how weak the rest of the teams are on their schedule.

Agreed, that was my main hang up in doing this whole thing. One thing I noticed though is that every team except us, MSU, and N Col have play up games. A couple teams have two but I think it kinda balances out still. Montana has the hardest schedule w/out an FBS game. I also figured in a con ranking too which shows the top 10 teams con sched is pretty similar. The difference is the teams that only have to play two tier one teams instead of three or four. Some teams also have "play down" games which even things up too.

Overall though, a SOS includes the whole schedule and a play up game makes your overall schedule much tuffer.

Thanks for doing the work on this, AlabamaGrizzly. Good stuff.
Thanx, I get bored reading all the BS on here. Just trying to keep some football related subjects on the board.

You know, when you put it THAT way EWU might struggle a bit this year. I can see 7-4.

a.g. thanks for time and effort to make this about bsc football...I found it interesting and pretty insightful....it will be fun to see how this shakes out for the season in retrospect....thanks again for your contribution to egriz.

I'll put Idaho State's schedule (two FBS teams, all three of the top-rated teams pre-season, one home game in a six-week stretch) against anybody's. If the Bengals win 7 games against that schedule, they will deserve to make the playoffs.

The way I see it, the only thing that kept you from the top is your D2 opponent instead of another FCS school. Cudos on plating Boise St though. Everyone in the BSC will be watchin' that game. I expect you to beat UNLV also.
