Big Sky con move up?

Quite possibly a dumb question but I’m gonna ask it anyway. With all these cons starting/restarting football programs at the FCS with intentions to move up, what’s stopping the Big Sky from taking its top 8 teams and say we’re moving too? Please go easy on my ignorance😊.

This is why we'll be damn lucky to even have a conference when fall rolls around.

Well just for starters there are only two teams on that list that have a shot at sustaining the minimum attendance requirement for FBS inclusion. Then there is the facility issues with more than half that list...

And additional money for additional scholarships for football and additional added sports, men's and women's.

I was thinking I shouldn’t post a list cus I thought it might be a distraction from my original question.

I’m all for a good “the sky is falling” story but this doesn’t look like too much to worry about, at least this fall anyway. No mention of athletic cuts in any story yet. What are D2, D3, and NAIA athletic budgets like? Ya, it’s gonna become a reality where on line classes may become the norm and school enrollment numbers will plummet. Times will definitely change. I imagine schools could learn to run their programs on much less then they currently use now if the overall desire to keep the athletics in school is there.

Because FBS doesn't want our conference and probably doesn't want anymore conferences. FBS approval would be necessary. These other little conferences aren't going to move, or get approval to me up.

Damn! Networks can get smaller conferences at about 25% of the Power 5 schools. We'll get to watch most HBCU schools and Group of 5 schools. Going to be interesting this spring starting in a couple of weeks and then next fall. Most media outlets have lost their ass this year and, well, you really know how bad it has been.

Alabama, it isn’t a dumb question, however, if the will for a move up existed, current finances won’t allow. We will be fortunate to continue at the FCS level of competition.

If anything, i see the FBS breaking up a little. Power 5 might become the Power 6 or 7. Those that are left at FBS level get to drop a few sports and join the upper FCS conferences (FCS Power 4 or 5 move up?).

The smaller ends of both FBS and FCS are going to have budget problems for both school and athletics. A merge could help. Then the bottom of FCS moves down to join whatever is left from Div2/3/Juco, etc.

I’ve always believed this to be the end result but the “process” is becoming painfully slow. To see what’s happening but at the snail pace that it’s going by is tormenting. I wish the ncaa would just get its shit together and be logical about the situation. Recognize what’s happening and be proactive about it. Form a committee with a short(maybe a year) timeframe to readjust the levels accordingly and take a couple years to implement it. Instead this is gonna be a 10-20 year process where we sit back and watch the ncaa slowly go through these ugly mutations like an acid bathed villain in a super hero movie. A quicker transition could save some programs by forcing them into better situations instead of allowing them to slowly lose their finger tip grip on the cliff edge.

Don't forget to add Idaho to your list to make that three teams capable of FBS, as they've already shown us how it's done. ;)

Not really. Even with some "home" (wink, wink) games at WSU, the Vandals never came close to meeting the minimum attendance requirement. In all their time in the FBS, I don't think they even made it to 12 thousand per year. Yet, for reasons that escape me, the NCAA kept granting them waivers. Here's an article from back when they made the drop-down:

I don't see how it would be any different for another try. Unless, of course, the NCAA revamped the rules to make it possible (which, with all that's going on right now, would not surprise me).

If this NCAA FBS requirement was enforced, there would be several teams forced back to the FCS ranks or lower. Why have requirements if they are not enforced?

Maybe they’re ment to be more like suggestions.

Or good ideas that should be worked towards. As long as you intend to meet them, you are good to go!

Good post. Posing all the possibilities of the post Covid NCAA football world generates discussion. My take at this juncture relates to what must be some dire financial circumstances for nearly all schools. Perhaps only the super rich big boys may weather this situation.

Thinking positive that vaccine and following protocols will provide a gradual return to full competition fall 2021.
