Big Sky Champs (or Eastern Game Thread)

OMG Hornets steal and lay it in to come within 3 and then steal the ball and miss an uncontested layin. GRRR! 52 sec left.
Sac gets ball with 20 seconds. Weber up by 3.
6.8 left, Sac timeout.

Both Woods and Adams were recruited to address the need for three point shooters. Neither have really worked out. In these two cases, Wayne' recruiting did not pan out and we are paying the price.

The Griz have two really big guys ... neither of whom seems to know how to use their size to the best advantage. Their shots too-often seem tentative, yet they don't really have great touch. And then they are continually out of position to get second shots or to kick the ball outside to a teammate.

I just checked the season stats ... after the ridiculous inside performance we just saw (where they were out-rebounded 3-to-2). Despite all that size inside, the Griz have barely managed to win the total rebound battle: (1004 to 953, thus averaging 34.6 per game versus 32.9). Worse yet, they have lost the battle for offensive rebounds (297 to 323) -- that's generally a sign of poor technique or lack of effort (or both).

The Griz do play good defense (most of the time) ... but you have to score too.

Woods has been given more than enough chance to get over his shooting woes. Wonder what goes on in Practice where Adams doesn't get a look in games?

I think this is spot on. I also know that you, like me, flipped back and forth to the GU game. This was seriously one of the first things I noticed. Compared to Sacre and Harris (who really aren't elite players), our bigs looked unable to position for rebounds on both ends of the floor. And I don't care if Selvig thinks he's a perimeter player, if you're seven feet tall, you better able to get some goddamned boards.

I could just cry, watching him try to launch a jump shot.

It seems to me he has a syndrome you see all too often with really big guys: Ever since they got their first giant growth spurt, they've been able to dominate just by being out there. They never had to learn much technique ... so they didn't.

Have the Griz won a tip all year without a guard stealing it? 2" - 6" height advantage but no initial tip advantage pretty much tells you all you need to know. If only we had a coach who knows how to coach big men. Wait, sorry. Well another BSC championship in front of 500, should make great television. Yea Fullerton.Who could have seen this coming? What happened to that guaranteed 10 - 20 point win over the Eagles?

Well, can't blame me for this one. I got disgusted after 5 minutes. Both the ecast and the team were not worth watching....the bball season resembles the football season....bad play, errors, poor judgement, and questionable decisions.....how can a 7 ft guy expect to dibble well, play the perimeter, avoid rebounding or boxing out? I think it is just as well the Griz don't get embarrassed again on tv....There is always next year....but no Qvale....ugh.

Michael Taylor is shooting 52.4% from 3-pt range for Whitworth:

"Michael Taylor (Brewster) has made an immediate impact in his first, and only, season with the Pirates. He leads the team in scoring average (19.7 ppg - 3rd in the NWC) and also leads in assists (3.58 apg, 3rd in the NWC). Taylor is second in the NWC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.27) and leads the conference in both free throw percentage (88.4%) and three-point percentage (.524). He scored a career-high 36 points in the December 28 win over Ripon, and has tallied 30 points three other times this season. He was the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year at Eastern Washington University. After a coaching change, he transferred to the University of Montana where he was a key contributor off of the bench each of the last two seasons."

I was confident the GRIZ would win this handily, and should have won it handily. When a team shoots as many bricks as the GRIZ do, it makes winning hard.

As much as I like Selvig's passing, hands, and shooting, I think his lack of rebounding and intensity upsets me more than what I like. Offensively, be a SF, fine, but please use your damn height to swallow more boards. Selvig is much softer than I ever imagined a seven footer could be. Mathias Ward is a more effective rebounder, and scorer than Selvig. Derek needs to find something to fire him up to compete for rebounds.

I pray somehow we find some offense and rebounding consistency. It would be a shame to not see Qvale in the NCAA tournament. He can compete against most bigs this year. He could make a name for himself as well.

Come on GRIZ, find your mojo again. Losing to Long Beach State the way we did was disappointing. Losing EWU the way we did was outright embarrassing. That is one game we should have never lost.

I believe he wanted a chance to play baseball as well. But I am sure there is more to it than that, considering he had to have known that with Staudacher leaving he would have been the go to long-ranger.
