Big Sky brass pleased with first Reno run

The point is....there was nothing wrong with the tournament...you just want to bitch about something....the games were good....the chipper was a good game between the 2 best teams......I heard of no issues with how it was run......so just keep bitching to bitch.....

Agreed on all points, box.

Would you agree that the same could be said about last year's tournaments in Missoula? The only difference was, that tournament was well-attended. So I guess I fail to see how this was an improvement.

you just have to get over the attendance issue......the BSC is comfortable with the first year attendance and confident that it will get better....but attendance is not a factor that will directly make or break the predetermined site.....and with the conference wanting to have a combined mens/womens tournament site for 24 teams limits the site possibilities....no site is going to be perfect...

You are right! The games were great, the refs terrible and it did come down to the two best teams,

all played where the average fan wasn't able to go.

Hell yes I bitch, that's what us minions do.

Is the average fan of a BSC team able to travel to Msla or Flagstaff or Grand Forks on a couple weeks notice easier than travel to a predetermined site.......

I'm not griping just to gripe, grizindabox. I'm a long time fan and make every reasonable effort to attend Griz games. My efforts to get to Reno failed (and I started planning in early Nov.) From friends who attended I heard that the games were great, and that there were a few raucous parties... but that ONLY the games featuring Montana and Weber State had attendance numbers that could be counted. Next in line (I heard) were North Dakota numbers. If ANY of the other Big Sky schools had shown fan numbers even close, I believe the tourney would have been considered a success. As is, the tourney gave the outward image of being a two-team show. Big surprise.

Furthermore, the media coverage beyond streaming was nonexistent. The Reno Gazette Journal did NOT cover it, instead relying on AP coverage. The ONLY press photo coverage was provided by the Sacramento Bee (one game, I believe) and the Ogden Standard Examiner. In fact, I believe there was no AP photo coverage either. This tournament was largely ignored. It's my opinion that -- had the tourney been housed in Ogden, Missoula, Billings or Spokane -- it would have been better attended and significantly better covered by the local media.

This tourney will doubtless take place in Reno the next two years. But major (structural) improvements will likely be necessary. While Big Sky Officials obviously worked hard, they're going to have to establish a process for significantly better actual tourney media attention, and then give at least an indication that there are people in attendance. If not, I'd say the Big Sky may well be facing a crisis two years down the line.

Anyway you can guarantee SOME built-in fans in places like Ogden, Missoula, Bozeman. That just ain't the case in Reno, and I sincerely doubt there ever would be. Just sayin'.... And the lack of TV coverage eliminated many of those would-be fans.

Once again....it is more about saving each individual school money while having all participate....that just won't work if you don't know where the tournament might be until the final weekend of the season....

Box where do the proceeds from ticket sales go? Do you know? I dont know. I would hope that it goes to the atheletic programs of the participating schools. If so doesnt choosing a site that makes more money (ie sell more tickets) accomplish similar results to finding a location that is less costly? I would love to know how much cheaper it was for all 12 teams to get to and complete the Reno tournament over one of the other suggested sites that likely would draw more fans.

Perhaps they wouldn't have to "save so much money" if they'd have the tournament in a place where fans of the schools could actually get to the fucking tournament and pay for tickets.

The way it's run now it's ENTIRELY an expense, with basically ZERO revenue to offset it. And no real hope that that will change any time soon.

And once again: If the tournament was in Spokane, PSU, EWU, UI, UM, MSU, ISU, WSU....ALL could have taken a fucking BUS to the tournament and not had to worry about traveling by plane and the costs associated with that.

Having the tournament in Reno made EVERYBODY have to fly. How, exactly, does that save everybody money?

or you can choose the predetermined site for a combined tournament that probably saves you money on the arena and gives you breaks for housing all 24 teams and allows each school to book travel far in advance at a lower cost......I would guarantee you that even with the attendance in Reno, the cost per school was less than under the old format..

you act like there was no one there......and if the tournament was in Sacramento or Grand Forks with a week notice do you think the attendance would be far superior...

It is not about the fans saving.......it is about the member schools saving money....and why do you think having 2 separate tournaments on short notice at a member institution is cheaper than a combined tournament that you can shop for the best deal.....

the Spokane bid did not accommodate both the men and women tournaments at the same site...maybe next time they will....that is why it was not chosen...

People want to believe there is a perfect site for everyone....but there isn't....and some just want the perfect site for them......which is stupid....
