Hey CV, mind if I take a stab?

It's not that the defense was statistically amazing or dominant. What made them really good was that for the most part they could reliably keep the Griz in games the the offense seemed hell-bent on keeping us out of. While there were break-downs and miscues, this defense was scrappy enough to bail the offense out all season. I wonder what the average TOP for the entire season is, however I think that our opponents have won this statistic quite impressively. Given just how much they were forced to play, they did remarkably well. While they are statistically less than stellar at the run, it was awful hard to put points on them. In short, they were the most reliable part of this team.

Are they better than many other defenses? Maybe. We play in an offense heavy conference, others do not. Stats don't always tell the whole story.

Scrappy? Fair enough. But being ranked above only nine teams against the run can't be explained away that easily.....That's a problem.

I think my point was that stats only tell part of the narrative. The defense kept us in more games than the stats suggest. I do agree that run defense absolutely has to improve. A deep playoff run, not to mention a championship run, is next to impossible otherwise.

CV's run defense stat isn't right. Not even close to being right. UM's rush defense stat, while not great, was 14th amongst playoff teams. Not great. Not bad. The rush defense stat is also skewed because UM played against the nos. 1, 10, 12 (twice), 15, and 18 ranked rushing offenses.

Sorry. Not my stat. Spin it anyway you want....what did a poster call you a few years back? " the shill of shills". The Griz D did give as good of an effort as they could yesterday.... But you always touting them and TG has more behind it then you're letting on.....

I was at the UNI - PSU game last night. While I wasn't surprised by UNI's physical brand of football, I thought that PSU actually played them very well. They mostly matched up evenly. Really there were 4 big running plays that got behind the PSU defense and that is why they lost..
Huh? UNI had over 400 yards rushing from Bailey and Smith. PSU had no answer. UNI had 277 in Fargo without Smith. The challenge is on NDSU to beat a team twice this week.

CV, you don't understand the stat, and you didn't look at it carefully. Yes, it was your stat. You posted it and touted it. You own it.

I see that you'll still afraid to answer the call and give your full assessment of the Griz D yesterday.

UNI are our Arch Rivals, NDSU will want this game BAD!

No team knows how good it really is until it gets to the playoffs against other successful teams in their conference. The playoffs show where the strengths and weaknesses of a team really are. Stitt, I'm sure, learned a lot from the playoffs. Now he definitely knows what his team has and what it needs. It's been a trial by fire.

Stitt, the coach that he is, now has the knowledge and experience to create a Griz team that will be National Champions. Maybe not next year, but close, because I guarantee you, the Griz will again be in the playoffs next year.

Barring a string of even more catastrophic injuries (which, sadly, can never be predicted), I do agree that the Griz have enough returning talent to get into the playoffs again next year.

The Griz were bipolar this year. Seems they forgot focus, preparation and maximum effort, not press write ups, win games. With NDSU having a week to heal up and another to break down new film, this was not going to be an easy game. SDSU showed how to stop this offense and get Gus off his game. Would be surprised if there's a direct hotline between Fargo and Brookings. Fact is our game plan didn't change or have an answer for what both state U's were doing. I believe Stitt, with another spring and fall camp under his belt, will have answers for this. As for the snap count, pitchers and catchers know enough to change signals throughout the game. I was surprised too.
