For those of us closer to breaking a hip than being it, can someone explain to me what this press release says? And be quick about it; I don’t know how much time I have left.

All 11 Big Sky schools are now a member of a group called the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF) that allows schools to compete in amateur eSports tournaments, kind of a like a college league. They run leagues for League of Legends, Rocket League, Overwatch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, FIFA 21, CS:GO and Chess.

UM was already a member, but now that they found a sponsor, the rest of the schools have joined.

eSports is a huge industry with a massive worldwide audience. People expect the League of Legends World Championship finals will soon have more viewers than the Super Bowl.

Lot of hours to fill. If the rights are cheap, they'll show it. Even heavily-discounted ad rates -- arm wrestling at 2:00 in the morning? -- bring in the dough. :lol:

The professor who heads the program and president of the Esport group is a great guy.

There is movement to make gaming a legit degree, people are making a living playing video games already and is a place to expand student recruiting. All good for the University and unfortunately some parents will have to start getting their kids to focus more time playing video games.

Funny but true.

Not everything needs a degree. People can make a living at either meth cooking or pole dancing but outside of Eastern Washington and UNLV I don't think those should be degree options either.

Funny stuff. I never would have imagined this to be a legit college course, but online gaming is creating a large following and not sure what the draw is at this point but could be more popular than most sports with great increases projected. There is an array of courses as per writing and developing programs, managing systems, tech services and marketing so a whole field in itself as the private sector continue to dump big bucks into it. The Esport backing can lead to a big opportunity for the university as they quote see the money unquote. Not sure if the gaming is just a group thing at this point, but there is a push to grow university education around the industry and UM has personnel in place. So that is a good thing as per expanding areas of study and increased enrollment. Build it and they will come. :thumb:
