The start of the NCAA Basketball Tournament is less than one week away! So this is a question that I have yet to see addressed in any meaningful way either in the national press or here on egriz.

Governor Jay Inslee of Washington State late yesterday declared an outright ban on any public gathering of more than 250 people. The governor of Ohio has requested a cancellation of all large political rally's in the state. Other measures are being taken around the country to limit public gatherings or cancel them all because of COVID19!

My question has two parts and many of you have already guessed what's coming.:

Does the NCAA cancel the tournament? In the alternative does the NCAA of for that matter, the Government hold the games without fan participation in the arena's, or just proceed as usual?

They will play without fans. Too big of an event and money maker (TV) for them not to play. I could see them consolidating the cities it will be played in to limit the travel/interaction and exposure.

My daughter (Purdue) just rcvd notice that school will be online only for at least 2 weeks after spring break. I believe the rest of the Big 10 is also doing this. She said all of her friends are still taking their spring break trips as normal and that the school is worried about outbreaks when the students return. By going with two weeks online (maybe more), it will be a form of quarantine.

Agreed, except for case-by-case decisions. I can understand Washington state, since they seem to be a "hot bed" of the problem. Seattle, specifically ... with their frequent interactions with China/Asia. Not so sure about Ohio. Have to use common sense, based on circumstances.

Sometimes the case is clear: Within the past hour or so, I received notice that the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, scheduled for March 22–26 in Philadelphia, has been flat-out canceled. Now this is a big deal, because that meeting draws 15 to 20 thousand attendees ... from all over the world. The worldwide attendance would surely include people from some major coronavirus hot spots in Europe and Asia. The Society (and Philadelphia) will take a huge financial hit, but there's no reasonable way to insure that such a mixed gathering would be safe.
 
So one of the regions is supposed to start next week in Spokane!! With the governor's ban, do they have to move it?

Even though it doesn't matter now, but the Washington ban was only for 3 counties on the westside...doesn't currently include Spokane.

Or for many other venues, for that matter. More or less business as usual.
 
next question: Does the Big Sky Tourney ban fans in the coming day or two?

I'd bet a beer that the championship game is without fans
