Best backups

Did anyone watch the linebackers closely? I didn't, but interested if anyone kept a close eye on the backups, who played/how they played. Owen obviously had the pick, he's a player I've always had a lot of hope for and think he has potential.

Did anyone else notice how close Worst stands to the place kicker, it looked like he only takes about a step and a half and boots one 50+ WOW. Worst is for sure the winner in the kicking game after his performance, my only concern now is will he get the blocking he needs to get the ball off, that short step may be the answer. Protection on PAT's has been a bit suspect.

He must stand close to himself as he is the place kicker. I think that you may have meant the holder.
Funny. :)

Only saw highlights (no live TV here in Idaho) from one angle, but that quick-step ... ka-boom did look impressive. The big-windup kickers have too many "moving parts" IMO. Back-in-the-day (ancient history), when I kicked -- straight ahead, not soccer style -- I worked hard at generating power with a quick half-step and then all leg and leverage. Now, I never hit these monster-long FGs that guys seem to make routinely now, but I never missed a point-after and never had a kick blocked.

I think Greenberg looked like a decent back up...for Worst.

That #97 DE, Ryan Johnson (I think), was god awful at firing off the ball and pursuing. He has to be the slowest DE I've seen. From what I could tell he mostly just got arm tied with the person blocking him and watched everything happen around him rather than shedding off his block and getting to it.

I thought Addison Owen did a great job and will be a good player in the future.

Would have thought I'd hear Van Ackern's name called a lot more than I did...

I paid attention to him a few times. While he did make contact he was trying to do a lot of tackling by brute force and ended up missing or bouncing off players rather than wrapping up.

I think Gustafson did pretty well for his first start. I liked him way better than SSH and he accomplished more in the little time he was in than SSH did. His touch passing was great and had good awareness.

Worst definitely has to be the go to kicker by now. Far more consistent. Lider was once again all over the place. I just don't think he has the leg so outside of 30 he is swinging so hard that all of his accuracy goes out of the window. He doesn't improve a whole lot inside the 30 either. Worst kicked a 50 yarder down the middle with length to spare and I think only had 1 kickoff that was not inside the endzone.

Seeing SSH in there brought back a lot of bad memories about last year. Doubt he could earn a starting job in the Frontier conference. They need to get Gus ready to back up JJ. I heard McKinney didn't even suit up.

McKinney was ill.

No disrespect to the kid, but HONESTLY, Shay would not start for Carroll, Northern, Rocky or Southern Oregon this season. The first three teams are losing their starter after this year so maybe next year.

VanAckerman lead the team in tackles, and part of the time he was playing a new position.

Interesting....seemed like I heard Dennards name, Rehm's name and Lebsock's name more frequently....then again, I was only paying cursory attention after about 8 minutes.

Ben Worst. Probably just earned himself the starting job. A freshman (redshirt freshman?) nailing a 50 yard field goal right down the middle? Good stuff.
A true Fr straight outta Twin Falls Id

Christmas, Twin Falls, Idaho, is my oldest memory

So since hermanson will be out vs NAU, who will be his replacement and is there much drop-off in talent?

I'd seriously consider Van Ackeren for a chance at Safety. Wouldn't hurt any. There's still Whitted and Gratton as well as Gamboa to fall back on.

Didn't Lebsock play safety in high school too? Either way, from what I've been reading we have options at the safety position and should be alright without him for a game or two. I would add that because it's not injury related and MH will be back in a couple of games, so long as we get the win we might be better off having more guys with game experience down the road :twocents:

worst is to lider as gustufson is to ssh.....the difference is to establish himself as the best back up qb, he needs more opportunity in playing time..imo....we really need to this to happen in case jj goes down....or we are up the proverbial creek.....
