Baer’s D after 2 games

If he wasn't any good, he couldn't have been hired over-and-over by quality FBS programs, and would have washed-out from the tight coaching fraternity many years ago. To get him at the FCS level is a steal. Would anyone prefer Ty or Semore?

I asked Ty for his no bullshit opinion of Baer, and he seemed to have his respect. For whatever that's worth to us armchair generals.

I really like what I've seen so far but it's also been just 2 games. One against a team with very little experience/skill in the passing game (UNI) and another against a team that was generally overmatched out the gate (Drake). I want to see how this defense looks against Sac, Davis, and some of the other more potent offenses in the conference before rushing to judgement on it.

I like the way the D line has been eating up blockers, sometimes two at a time, which has allowed the outstanding talent at LB to show through. There is no doubt Olson is a monster. Fast, smart ,fills really well, hits hard. So is Buss of course, and Lewis showed great promise last year but got dinged up if I remember. The lack of pass rush without blitzing does concern me, and there has been a good deal of blitzing, and that led to 7 sacks last week, most of them by LBs. Granted it was Drake but, something works. The surprising performance of the back end of the D coverage has also been a huge factor. This weekend will be a test and then the pass heavy BSC will begin. I very much like what Baer has done so far. With the offensive challenges, we are not 2-0 without the D. But, like BW I'm still "wait and see". Egriz is a tough crowd.

Perhaps worthy of a modification to the saying: "If you don't follow the Griz, you'll be running with a Baer behind!" Seriously, a great name for a Grizzly coach: Grizzly Baer...

Intensity, physicality, speed, and tackling have all been phenomenal. I don’t think anyone could reasonably have expected this level of execution this early in the season given the coaching, personnel, and scheme changes. At this point I’d give them an ‘A’. Hopefully they’re able to hold up against some of the more potent offense in the league. This weekend will be another test for our young team, and I can’t wait to see how they handle it! GO GRIZ!

I have absolutely no problem with the D-line play so far. It is true we have not had a great rush on the qb to date but you really can't blame that on the line in a 3-3-5 defense. Take a look at the rushing stats that this line has and then tell me they are suspect! And remember, Northern Iowa was supposed to have a pretty good running game.

The first half of the first two games have been phenomenal scorewise -- only allowed 3 points so far this year.

G1 ... 0 ... 0 | ... 7 ... 16
G2 ... 0 ... 3 | ... 7 ... 6
Tot .. 0 ... 3 | ... 14 ... 22

So far, I like how they have adjusted and improved. Some of that has taken a little longer than I would have liked, but they have improved.

Just a couple nitpick examples, game 1 fumble recoveries compared to game 2. Significant improvement.
During game 2, playing a soft conservative defense for way too long before attempting a more aggressive approach.

Just my 2¢, which won't even buy you a cup to put coffee in, let a lone fill it.

One thing that concerns me about the defense now is that it is pretty high risk high reward, just like Semores was. When the Griz get no pressure on the quarterback we get exposed deep, and that happened numerous times against WIU. I think Nuanez on the ESPN show had a similar take. I just worry that teams with decent lines that have been able to look at our first three games will pick us apart. I hope Baer has another wrinkle to add now that conference play has started.

Pretty much ANY defense that fails to get pressure on the QB (in whatever scheme/stunt that's called) will get "exposed" deep....those guys can't cover forever.....

Griz have made up for weak secondaries in the past with a strong pass rush...something I hope develops this season.
