Bad news for the Griz...

Good news for my alma mater. OK, maybe not bad news for the Griz, since the game won't affect their RPI or UC-Riverside's, but the University of Puget Sound defeated UC-Riverside tonight 115-111. UPS is D3, but is ranked #5 in D3 right now. Their only loss this year came to Warner Pacific, an NAIA school, who was leading Portland St. tonight @ the half, only to lose by just 9. Good day to be a Logger. I'm sure they have the Griz to thank for softening up UC-Riverside for them.

In basktball these things don't surprise me. When you only have five player's on your team, all it takes is one or two outstanding players who evaded D-I recrcuiters to overacheive. It's very different from interdivisional football games.

We can officially start worrying about RPI after we lose an NCAA tourney game because of an inflated seed. Until then, the entire matter is irrelevant because there is no way the Sky will get two bids.

Like I said on SacBuzz, that game got me wondering about the state of Big West basketball. First, you have a team knock off Stanford. (OK, the luster's been knocked off of that since then, but at the time it was considered a good thing.) Then another team waxes Western KY and Fresneck, both of whom were rated higher than BWC. But we've seen teams get beat by Stanislaus and Sonoma and now Puget Sound. Something's rotten in the Big West. There's been some speculation that the Riverside AD may pull a Riley. We'll see.

My main point is that right now it seems that the Sky is the place to be and the California Bus League is not. I can easily foresee Montana-Sac in the BSC final and possibly getting BOTH in, at the expense of last year's two bids for the BWC.

Both getting in what? A hot night club? I hope you don't really believe that two Big Sky schools will get in the big dance. If you do, I have some ocean front property here in Montana if you want to buy. ;-)
