Back from the game, disappointed...

...Did'nt get my wish. Half of our offense is two guys standing down low while 3 other guys play catch 25 feet from the basket? Dlouhy should play more. Kid can shoot and take the ball to the basket. He needs more pt to gain some confidence, then watch out. Pederson should start. None of our big guys can do much, at least he can pop a j once in awhile. We hustled and for the most part got back on d really well in transition. We got tortured downlow. Mansell is Shane Christiansen all over again. Gonzaga is good. Duh. We can't shoot this badly for the whole season, right?

Sorry for the rant. First time seeing the Griz this year. On to Cheney Thursday nite.

Gonzaga was big and very physical. Their inside game was definitely impressive. I thought the officiating was pretty lopsided and at some points downright awful. Did anyone else see Mansell get knocked out of bounds by a Gonzaga player with the result being Gonzaga got the ball? Or when Turiaf was draped over Easley's back while tipping in a missed shot? Bleh.. I don't think the officiating cost the Griz the game or anything, it probably just added to some of the frustration. It really hurt the Griz that Davis & Seyfert got into foul trouble early, and fouled out early in the 2nd half.

The Griz didn't shoot very well from outside the arc, going 5-19 from 3 point range, two of those being Pedersons 3's towards the end of the game. Pederson did play well, as did Dlouhy, but that was towards the end of the game when many of Gonzaga's starters were no longer playing. Dlouhy does have a very nice looking shot, and we've seen that Pederson can shoot well too. I wouldn't change the starting lineup around based off of one game though.

The Griz turned the ball over 16 times this game, which is below their average. I can think of at least 3 turnovers which in my opinion shouldn't have been turnovers but instead fouls on Gonzaga (Mansell being knocked out of bounce, Horne being grabbed while he's dribbling causing him to lose it out of bounce, and Venters being grabbed when going for a pass).

The Griz overall shot a higher FG% (45.5%, which is the 3rd highest against Gonzaga this year), but got killed on the boards 44 to 23. According to the stats I'm looking at, Mansell & Lynch were our leading rebounders with 3 a piece. Gonzaga shot 42.1% from the field, their 2nd lowest FG% this season, the lowest coming in a loss to St. Joseph when they shot 36% from the field. Gonzaga had 16 offensive rebounds and the Griz only had 4. Gonzaga also got to the foul line 43 times whereas the Griz only shot 18 free throws. Overall I think the Griz did a pretty good job against a very talented Gonzaga team. Gonzaga had a few pretty impressive runs on the Griz, and the Griz put a few runs on Gonzaga in the first half. I think this is a Gonzaga team that deserves to be ranked higher than they are. They are ranked around #5 or #6 based on their RPI.

I wouldn't say that none of our big guys can do much. Davis in only 15 minutes of action (foul trouble) scored 13 points and I think he's going to be putting up some big numbers in conference for the Griz. One thing you probably noticed is when Davis gets the ball inside teams typically double team or even some times triple team him, that I think is largely because of the fact that the Griz are in kind of a shooting slump from outside, so the other team can focus more on stopping Davis & Seyfert using a double team on them, or playing more zone since they don't have to worry as much about the 3's flying in. These guys have played a very grueling schedule and I'm glad the slump came in the Non-Conference instead of during conference play. I'm sure they'll come out of the slump soon here and the Griz will be knocking down the 3s again to keep the other team from clogging up the middle with a zone or double team on our big guys.

Dexter I completely agree on the officiating - the reason we didn't get many rebounds is because they jumped over our backs. That said, they were that much better, and could have easily won by 40 or more points.

I was a little disapointed in Gonzaga for one reason - After they had a 30 point lead and 2 of our starters had fouled out, and Kennedy basically surrendered and cleared the bench, Gonzaga left their starters in for about 3 - 4 more minutes. Even that might have been o.k., but they also continued the full court press and virtually every trip down went for the circus shot, with multiple alley-oops and a backward slam. In my mind Few was trying to embarass the Griz, and I hope in the future we get the chance to return the favor. I always pull for Gonzaga when they are not playing the Griz, but I thought they really showed a lack of class last night. I was really hoping that on one of the alley-oops one of the Griz players would lay a hard foul on Turiaf, knocking him to the floor - not injuring him, but scaring Few into a little class.

I heard from a pretty reliable source that Booker and Davis are attending interim classes because they are academically ineligible. Anyone else hear that?

dornblazer- before you put Pederson in the starting lineup, consider the time of the game his points came. He can shoot the 3 some but he was getting wide open looks. Nobody with the GRIZ was getting wide open looks earlier in the game. Also, Ryan is not at all physical and simply does not rebound well. Look at his stats from last year. From what I understand, Ryan is a great young man and I am no way slamming him. However, he is not really an inside player. The Zags are a legit top 10 team and I don't want to see staring lineup changes based on this one game. I also agree that the officiating was poor and Zag players received many free passes on hammering GRIZ players. The GRIZ are now 0-0 and I believe will do well in the Big Sky.

I do not think that Coach Few was trying to embarass the Griz by leaving starters in. The Zags are down to seven players who will share the minutes. The two guys who got in at the end, Floyd and Michaelson, only play when the game is over. The Zags start conference play on the road against Pepperdine Thursday. I think Few was trying to see which combinations worked the best.
Your chance to beat Gonzaga may come next year if the Zags lose Turiaf along with Steppe, Violette, Skinner and Fox.

The Zags looked like they were firing on only 6 cylinders. Maybe it was the lack of students. The announcers said it was not the usual Kennel. Maybe they were looking past the Griz and toward Pepperdine. The Griz could have been smoked by 40 or more.

Hey - you guys know more than me, I get to see this team twice a year, if I'm lucky. But perhaps after losing 8 games in a row, you should tinker with the starting lineup! I was'nt really lumping Davis in with the "big guys" - I imagine he will have a good conference season. From what I saw McKay, Seyfert, and Easley did not much while Pederson at least contributed some points. I don't care who is in the game you still gotta can your shots and he did. Your always gonna get the worst of it officiating wise at Gonzaga, but overall it was not bad compared to some of the crimes I have seen committed there.
I saw Dlouhy play for three years in high school, just think the kid will turn out to be a pretty good player, and given the number of bricks being thrown up every night by these guys, why not now?

Booker is the one that is academically ineligible at this time. Will be taking the winter inter-session classes. Hopefully, he will pass and raise his GPA above the minimum level so that he can play some more this season.

There are some pluses from this game. We did have a good shooting percentage (but not from 3), we kept our turnovers down and we scored 67 points (well more than WSU or EWU). Plus everyone is healthy now which will give us some more depth (especially in the middle with McKay being able to play if Seyfert gets into foul trouble). It looks like we should be ok in league play. Most of the teams we lost to are well above .500 for preseason (Jackson St is well below and Wisconsin-Milwaukie is 6-5) so we probably played the toughest non-conference schedule in the Big Sky which means we're better prepared. I don't think our record is very indicative of the talent level on our team. I think once we start playing teams that are at more of our level we should be fine.

Zaga was probably a little off trying to make up for losing Skinner and Fox, who are both integral parts of their offense.

We definately weren't expected to win this game considering Gonzaga has only lost 3 games at The Kennel over the past 6 seasons and all things considered it sounds like we actually played pretty decent.

I agree that Pederson doesn't really belong in the starting line-up. He's a really nice guy but he's just not agressive enough to be starting. He did well against Zaga because he was big enough to go against their guys. Even without Fox the Zags are a big team.
