Awesome Quotes from DD

Sounds like Kent took my advice. I posted a few weeks ago, he needed to reach out to Dave no matter how much of a long shot it was, and eventually, at least get DD involved in the process.

Here's DD's thoughts on him, and the job

"It's that I didn't have a thought process going on and think about that, but I believe when you do sign something, you should honor it. I really do (He's in midst of three-year deal with the Stamps). I thought about it last year before signing that, and I'm not necessarily going to change my mind all the time."

"Some of them did, and some other really good people, too. I hadn't talked to Mike Tilleman (from Havre) in a long, long time. And I appreciated the call from him. I talked to the AD (Kent Haslam) and a few other people. You know, I thought about it. I did. But I don't want to be this guy who is distracting. I've always felt like whoever they bring in, I'm going to give him my full support. I want people to know I still love the school and support them fully, but I'm just in a different stage of my life. I've got a young family and I'm comfortable where I'm at. I do think that Montana is deep down in all of us who are from there. You get a yearning to come home, but you've got to understand that life has moved on. My wife's Canadian and my kids are pretty locked in to what they do here. As the years go by it gets tougher to get up and move the whole thing back to where you grew up and had that great success."

DD on Hauck

A: In my opinion I think you want to get somebody who is not as inclined to move. I think it's important to still have some of the roots of your program, and I think there are some good candidates out there who do have good ties to the program. I'm going to say right now that I know Bobby Hauck is unemployed.

Q: Yes, I know.

A: "He was probably the best coach that university's had, so I'd be disappointed if the call wasn't made to Bobby. Plus, Tim Hauck's on his staff, and Timm Rosenbach's on his staff. That's some great football people. Now I don't know if Bobby's interested. I know when Bobby left there were some people who were like, we're going in a new direction. Well, I think Bobby had them going in the right direction. I love the Hauck family. I think they're awesome. I also know that Brent Pease has been looking, and Kraig Paulson's been looking. There's some good people right there."

"No scoop. Better to be honest. I am going to call Kent Haslam and hopefully give my opinion on a few guys (for the Grizzly job). Maybe I can help out that way. I appreciate that he called me and I always do appreciate the interest in the state."

Who's not as inclined to move? I think it's our coach that is retiring.

I think he meant move on quickly, like use UM for a 2 or 3 year springboard. Get someone who will be here a while.

So I read it a couple more times. Disclaimer: I have also consumed some beers since halftime of our game today.

I'm unclear if Dave is endorsing anyone or just talking like a politician? Would UM be a "springboard" for BH this time around or has he saved enough cash and settled down enough to where he might stick it out for a while? I'm uncertain as to what he is implying?

With a few rare exceptions most of the FCS head coach positions are a stepping stone. You have a few years of great success and someone comes sniffing around waving the money carrot in your face.

With that said, it looks like we have the current players and (especially) the recruits to make good things happen in the next few years. I'm not going to pretend I have an inside scoop or know what Haslam is thinking. My guess is someone is within a few days of putting ink on the initial paperwork. I'm going to trust him and hope for the best.

Would a re-hire of Hauck be any different than what we had with Delaney? I guess you can look at it two ways - once school of thought says hire the guy who is motivated for career advancement and is hungry and on the way up, and the other school of thought says hire the guy that wants to return to retire in Montana. I thought we just had that with Delaney and the Griz were just another good team that went out and played on Saturdays.

I don't know what to think, in the end it all comes down to chance. Hauck has scratched that wanderlust itch and in the process has encountered other rabid fanbases so maybe it wasn't so bad after all back at Montana.

I'm hoping they hire a guy with the mental energy to take it to the next level above just another good team.

Hauck is 50; I don't think retirement has yet to enter his mind.

In my opinion, anyone who thinks Bobby would just be here to have is team play on Saturdays is forgetting who Bobby is. Bobby loves winning and hates losing. Even if he wanted to retire at Montana, no doubt would he make sure his players were playing just as hard as they did his first time at UM. The guy is also only 50 so he's got plenty of energy in the tank. His teams were great, just couldn't get over the NC hump.
