Available Coaches?

Neuheisel would be an excellent choice. Good guy, great recruiter, great coach. He'd get real Grizzy real fast. Hire him.

Absolutely. The guy who presided over one of the dirtiest eras of UW football would be a fantastic fit at this point. Superb ethics, teams never go downhill as the years progress, and he never throws players under the bus.

Hire him now!

While living in Boise, during four years of Hawkins' time, I can tell you that Hawkins did some very stupid things. My favorite was playing a guy who had a felony charge against him the same year he played him. Most Boise fans were glad for the Hawk exit. Peterson, Hawks replacement, has a very tight control of the players. They know that stupid actions leading to, at least, no playing time. His rule says no internet websites for players during the season. Hows that for control. Just look at his results?

These names might be a stretch, but how about Dennis Green or Herm Edwards?

Green has college experience, as he coached at Northwestern and Stanford. If my memory serves me correctly he coached in the UFL not too long ago (or is still there or the league folded).

Herm Edwards on the other hand, he does not have college experience. I wonder if he'd want to be a head coach again, either at the collegiate or pro level.

I wonder if the NCAA or individual conferences had something similar to the "Rooney Rule" to make sure that at least one minority is interviewed for a head coaching position.

Ron McBride is available -- couldn't stay retired at Weber and is now an assistant for the Utah Blaze (AFL)

I bet Joe Glenn would love his old job back -- Urban Meyer called him the best coach in the MWC

DD -- even though he makes $230K (according to another poster here) Canada's tax rate is 45% -- so salary would be about the same?

But with a premier FCS program, even with what is going on, emphasis should be placed on identifying and following the right selection process, and having the right selection committee. UM would be foolish to select a new HC on short order -- it won't do any good to try to have someone in place before spring ball is done.

Rob Ash was not on anyone's radar when we started the selection process -- and many of us (me included) wanted someone else on short list (Lennon). But the selection committee had it right. Take your time, pick the right guy.

Talking with some Griz fans recently, Glenns name came up, but the general consensus was that nobody wanted Glenn...UM wasn't good enough for him, and now it turns out Glenn isn't good enough for UM...pretty ironic.

Yeah, I'd like to see Glenn back. Too many times coaches, players, CEO's, senators, governors, etc., etc., don't know how good they have it where they are. Glenn should have stayed, but that's history. Engstrom had to do something. Turned out it was dramatic, but it signals that UM will no longer tolerate misconduct, by whatever definition, from any student, player, professor, administrator, whomever. That's the way it should be, and should have been. This gray area of back & forth, as far as UM is concerned is beside the point. There really should be no "due process" when it comes to students. Athletes, or not. Salaried employees is another matter.

Students of all brands should not have the rights to due process we as americans are given by law?

I do think both academic and athletic scholarships students should follow the same behavior codes and face the same punishments for any transgression. But all students should have due process granted to all americans.

But your thinking is obviously the thinking Mr Royce Engstrom and most of the mob on this board believe. Guilty until proven innocent, and even then it wont matter as the punishment will be dealt before any student is able to have due process.

Tyranny of the Majority. Germany before Hitler was a democracy, he was brought to power by people willing to sacrifice theirs and others due process and freedoms to feel better about themselves. Many on this board remind me that this can happen again and does happen in democracies just like ours.

There is no bogey man like hitler here, but people are willing to sacrifice the freedoms and due process america stands for to feel better in missoula now and that is disturbing.

This is one hell of a Job in college football. A younger guy could use it to build his resume or a more seasoned vet could cement their legacy over the next 5-7 years. Whoever it is should keep this staff in tack as much as possible.

Plus, being a Grizz asst' is not as lucrative as you might think these guys are here because they want to be. Either way I would expect someone to be announced shortly, especially if they want to make an announcement during the spring game.

Rick Neuheisel - He actually is register with the bar as an attorney! More of a wish then a hope to me.
Joe Glenn - Anything that can be tied back to success & Don Read era in Missoula
Dan Hawkins - Might be the best overall option given past Boise success & that FCS is a better fit!
Paul Wulff - Has won @ FCS level but I want to see our current coaches stay, they have what it takes
Dennis Erickson - Likes to drink too much & got fired @ ASU for lack of program discipline
Dave Dickinson - It would be an incredible grab to bring Dave back but dont expect it long term he's destined to be a CFL Head Coach or NFL O.C. you cant expect him to say no to jobs like that
Mike Van Diest - Good, strong potential here, especially would like to see what he would do with the better talent vs better talent
Jerome Souers - This is that seasoned vet of an FCS coach that could make a great leader of a program he has my interest

There ya go! Except for the fact we need to hire an AD first and then start looking at coaches.

I would hope that Coach Delaney is allowed to be the interim coach for the upcoming season, thus hopefully keeping the coaches that are currently here so as to give some stability for the team in the fall. If not, I fear the coaches will have no choice but to start looking, and it creates even more instability for our team. Here's to hoping...

Does he even want to be HC for a full season or did he just agree to help the team make it through spring?

Also, I have to think recruiting would be extremely difficult when the recruits know it will be a completely different staff.

IMO Slick Rick N would not be a good fit. He had some run in with the NCAA while at Colorado and again at UW. He has talent but not what the Griz need.

I like Hawkins myself and think he could do well at UM.

VanDiest no doubt has done great things at Caroll with much lessor talents. It would be interesting to see what he could do at UM.

Cowboy Joe well I think he would be solid for UM again. I could see him coming back and coaching untill he retired.

Personally I think it would be best to find a coach as soon as spring practice is done. Get permanent direction in place rather than have this team play a season knowing ANOTHER coach would be coming in.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with your first assessment, but the second doesn't intrigue me whatsoever.

For instance, granted, Mr. Joe Glenn was at the helm for a twenty-four game winning streak with also the 2001 National Championship on his resumé, but, in losing three of his last four games he showed that he was evidently listening to someone else before those games, namely, seemingly, the University of Wyoming and their overtures on his being considered their next Head Coach that resulted in his...'why even bother with Griz football from therein to the end of the season.' His post-game interview after the Griz lost to MSU completely left me flabbergasted:.."a rivalry should never be as one-sided as the Griz have had the previous sixteen meetings." Huh? I don't care if you call it a rivalry or not, to tell you the truth, but I'd never condone losing on purpose to any opponent, yet alone to the MSU Bobcats. Sorry. Keeping Edwards in to finish 1 - 19 on passing when there was a Brandon Neill on the sidelines, who could have given a better accounting of himself that of what I saw IMHO, would have been a move to say:.."I'm still trying to win this here game." Didn't happen.

Afterwards, after for all intends and purposes, that "Cowboy Joe" was pretty ensured on continuing talks with Wyoming on their vacant HC position in the off-season, Glenn slapped together a recruiting class that left the Griz devastated on recruiting for 2007. Granted, Glenn did receive some recruits that turned out quite well; perhaps already committed before good o' "Cowboy Joe" got distracted by Wyoming four of five games left in the regular season. Such players as Dustin Dlouhy, Jeff Marshall, Kerry Mullen and a transfer in Jeff Disney out of Chaffey College, and a Michael Potts that lasted all of two years. But outside of that? Not much < http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7921" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Seemed like he just picked some names out of a hat and left it at that sort of deal.

Such a lowlife kick in the gut that "Cowboy Joe" did to the Griz would have been better served if he had left right before the Eastern Washington game 11/16/2002 than to carry on the discreet charade. Allowing what was left of the Griz Coaching Staff to concentrate on the games at hand that were left in the season. What "Cowboy Joe" did to the Griz resulted in the 2007 recruiting Class that could only sign six high school players and not much else, didn't exactly impress me; and of those I can only remember two that stuck around for four years: Ryan Fetherston and Jeff Larsen.

Maybe you can consider 'Cowboy Joe" to coach your Pop Warner League teams, other than the Griz, but I'd really rather not even lower myself to ever consider forgiving Glenn for his antics in 2002.

WyoGriz, I fully agree with your post.

Joe Glenn is a very capable coach. He knows how to win games and I'm sure he will do fine in South Dakota. Yet the way he wrapped up his term in Missoula left a very sour taste in my mouth and I'd be disappointed to see him brought back under any circumstances. Though you'd have to admit there would be a certain irony to see him bail out of his recently signed contract there to jump back here...

that is until he bailed out on us again to jump somewhere else.

Stay where you are Cowboy Joe, we will find a new piano player!

I agree, 1982. I earlier posted that Glenn would be good for the program. Here's what I think  UM should look for in a new coach:

1. Young
2. Either a winning FCS HC or an asst from a winning FBS program (Maybe a winning FCS HC might not be so young.)
3. Preferably earlier ties to UM
4. We don't want a coach who wants to finish out his years to retire. We want a young coach who wants to make a statement with this team, so he can move up. (Sorry, but that's where UM is.) Give us 4,5,6 years of winning w/ a NC in there. OK, OK, there's the Don Reads. Give me a break!
5. Could be an asst from a pro program
6. Could be a former player
7. Could be someone already on staff

UM is a premier football program in the FCS. I'm sure there will be no lack of candidates for the position. My only question is: What will be the offensive & defensive philosophies of whomever applies? Do we want a Hauck-style offense/defense? Or, to we want the Pflu/Breske style?
