I would be real curious to see what the commissioner, staff and regents were talking about.
The Missoulian FOIA was pretty early in the ordeal. It dealt with UM staff emails, but nothing from the regents or commissioner that I remember. But by June of 2012 Asst Commish Kevin McRae was the official spokesman on the subject. Royse had gone into hiding. And that summer it was the commissioner, not Engstrom, who decided against expelling Johnson.
So what happened? UM was rushing to throw an innocent kid under the bus and then in less than two months ends up letting him stay.
I don't think the U decided to reverse course out of the goodness of its heart. It also let Johnson back on the team and chose to let him start. While egrizxers might see that as good and just, it's a tremendous about face for Engstrom, given how berserk Missoula had become. Whatever changed, it didn't happen in Missoula. It happened in Helena.
I would like to read what Pat Williams was up to and whether Schweizer got involved--thing the Missoulian didn't seem at all curious about.

Read the book when it came out. Saw the movie when it came out....that ^^ WAS a great read, and an interesting update. Perhaps most interesting that Krakauer still gives a shit about getting the story right.

Since i wasted my time reading it, maybe i can save some of you: The only "interesting" part of that article was the extent of the literary license. The author assumed potato seeds killed him because he apparently said so in his diary. But the author added the "[ato]" part. What it really said was "EXTREMELY WEAK. FAULT OF POT SEED." I think its more likely that the hippie died from eating too many POT seeds, just like he said.

The case should be pretty straightforward. The u is obligated to assert student privacy rights under federal law. Usually an obligation imposed by Congress will trump a conflicting obligation under state law due to federal preemption pursuant to the Supremacy Clause of the federal constitution. I suspect the u system will raise that by motion right away. If that argument fails for some reason, the only thing left for the u to argue is that the privacy rights of JJ clearly outweigh the merits of public disclosure. That's a hard argument to make given how much of the case has played out in public and that the request is directed at communication by government officials. Let the legal games begin!

krakauer is digging into how the commission of higher ed. handled this, not um. at least not um at this point. he's trying to figure out if the commission office played a role in j.j. not being expelled when the university court expelled him and o'day said he was in the missoulian. basically he wants to know if the commission office played a role in reversing the expulsion.

if they didn't, then he's probably going to be looking why um reversed the expulsion or why um expelled him in the first place.

its unclear whether or not he's writing a book solely on this case or if he's writing something about sports or rape in general. it could even be just a couple paragraphs of some other book as an example of similar things happening across the country. his books often include little side stories like that.

Glad to see you quickly deleted your incorrect info on O'Day having been quoted in the Missoulian saying that JJ had been expelled. O'Day had been fired 6 weeks before the university court hearing.

you're lying. i didn't delete anything. the comment on o'day is from the a.p. report by matt volz. it states, "Former UM athletic director Jim O'Day previously confirmed the expulsion order to the Missoulian newspaper."
