Attendance and the NCAA Split

Below is a list of the 157 football teams that average over 10,000 people per home game (2010 stats). I inserted some gaps to indicate a 4 (64 teams), 5 (80 teams) or 6 (96 teams) Mega conference league. I dont think there is much debate about the to 64 teams being division 1 (except Air Force)... Nor is there much debate about teams 110 to 157 being division 2 the real fun begins with teams 65 to 110 if the Mega leaugues are expanded to 96 teams. And no I do not think that any of the FCS teams should be in the Mega conference.

Even though it's not going to happen, let's suspend reality and pretend that it might. It will be so expensive - we'll have to cut the Cats loose.

For those of you that do not believe thwre is a super conference coming... what proof do you have that it wont?

What I see is the Large conferences taking every advantage of the others.
I see teams like Boise scrambling to get into THE BIG EAST.... WHY?
I see The likes of Weber, msu and Sac State building in the middle of a recesion.
I see a 4 team playoff that will never include a TCU, Boise (ect)
I see conference comisioners commenting that a split will happen.
I see bowl games that are losing money not only for the bowls but for the teams in the bowl games
I see a football season where there are only 10-15 teams that have a chance to win a NC.
I see voters that are tied ONLY to the big conferences.
I see the haves and the have nots in the FBS and the division is getting larger.

In other words... I SEE A SPLIT, not because I want it but because it is the plan of the top conferences.

Check out the article on ESPN today with the ND Irish AD. He mentions a committee in 2014 will vote on teams that play in this 4 team playoff. One thing the AD mentioned was strength of schedule will have a great deal of determination on whom gets into the playoff.

My guess is that there will be no FCS OOC games with the PAC12, SEC, BIG TEN, BIG12 (the Big 4 let's call them). (I think some schools in ACC and BIG EAST will be taken in by the Big4 and some will not).

Sadly many FCS programs count on one if not two pay day games to help fund there programs. If the Big4 stop scheduling FCS schools for there soft games the Big4 will look to fill the OOC schedules with other Big4 schools or with other mid major "FBS" conferences, MWC, CUSA, SBC, MAC. This of course would then reduce the amount of FCS and mid major OOC games as well. There will be no big pay day games with the Big4 or moderate pay day games with mid majors. If this happens which by all accounts it will, it will be a major blow to many FCS programs.

Some FCS programs may have gambled on this coming. I believe they have gambled right. If this all plays out I can only hope at some point other solid FCS teams have a shot at getting to mid major status.

I believe this could be a death blow to what we know of the FCS as it is today.

That's not evidence...

Its coming make no mistake about it. There has been grumbling and talk about this for 12 years. And it has not been simply on message boards. Most of the major conferences have leaked information over the years and it is what is intended. ANd most of them now see that the bowl games are a losing effort.

There will be 3 divisions:
Division 1 top 60-96 teams (8-16 team playoff)
Division 2 Next 60-96 teams (20 team playoff)
Division 3 all the rif raff (20 team playoff)

The main reason for all of this is money. The big guys want it all!!! But they need the second division in order to schedule enough games.

JCU... I am not going to rehash the last 12-15 years... but see info below

I just do not see, how it does not happen. Is it coincidental, Montana, Montana State, Sac State, and Portland State, all recently putting money into upgrades, in hopes to be properly prepared?

Is it coincidental, more schools have been doing studies, surveys, etc to determine what is feasible?

Why are conferences jockeying for position in having the best teams possible, with good tv markets?

Prior to the last few years, why have the changes been fewer, and further between?

Conferences, schools, and programs are all preparing the best they can?

I know, all these things are just happening for the sake of change, without any justification, or reason whatsoever. Like it, or not, It will happen.

There has been a split ever since the BCS was formed. It's just an issue whether the NCAA, powerless against the BCS, ever acknowledges it and tries to regain a foothold by bullying the have-nots into a coral that they have a chance to control. The NCAA is no more than a regulatory agency for major college football today.
