This weekend I took two of my friends to their first Griz game. The loss was disappointing but not surprising given the atmosphere. We needs advertising and you can't really do anything about stupid fans (cheering during offense, etc.), but there are five areas we can change.
1. It starts with the pregame
WHO HAS CONTROL OF THIS?! I do not give a crap about the old mascot coming out in a Bulls uniform (also, very hard to explain the "significance" to my friends). I noticed two things, first fans weren't in the stadium because the shows have been SO horrible lately, and second, NOT ONE PERSON was pumped up by that entrance. A flat crowd = a flat team. Do something EXCITING! That pregame probably cost about $300.
2. The fillers
Ads were bad yes, but they are a necessary evil. What about the acknowledgments? My buddy joked that he would know half the state of Montana before the game was over. Can we limit this to say....five per game? Some of them are important, but most are congratulations for finishing 6th at the Miss. Butte pageant.
3. Events Issues
The crowd being flat is part of the pregame problem, but there are other issues too. The #37 flag is a rip off of Seattle and I've been fine with that, but can we get a BIGGER damn pole and flag? Such an anti-climatic experience.
The one time we got the "MONTANA....GRIZZLIES" cheer going the speakers were blasting followed by the band playing. Band, shut up for this part, what a way to kill an environment. Whoever is in charge of the pregame, why not kill the speakers one minute before the game starts and start the chant instead? What a great way to pump up the fans and team.
4. Get back in the damn stadium
Our team came out flat for the 2nd half, makes sense being as there were 1,000 people in the stadium. Here's the point---either you believe the crowd makes a difference and you realize its bad fanhood not being back in the stadium, or you don't think the crowd makes a difference in which case you most likely don't have a problem with the current gameday atmosphere.
5. Get rid of Mo
Seriously. I never want to see Benny again.
I hope someone who can control these things gets a chance to read these suggestions.
