Athlon 2016 FCS Preseason Rankings

EWU and UND getting some extra benefit b/c of two special players they have, Kupp and Santiago. Also UND's super soft schedule helps them big time. They may win the Big Sky (or split with NAU) and go into the playoffs with 1 or 2 losses, while not really having played much of the presumed strength of the conference.

Kupp is game-changer, best WR in the FCS since Randy Moss. For that alone they get a big bump in these early polls, despite a brutal schedule.

Must be the ONLY thing they are looking at, but it should have no bearing on the rankings. Every year, some team like Bethune Cookman or Jackson State goes 11-0, then gets pummeled in the playoffs when they have to play a real FCS team. In my opinion, North Dakota is in that same category.

I would agree with this. I don't think UND is that good, they're schedule will make them look better than they are...

Be real careful agreeing with me...... REAL CAREFUL!

Why? I do it all the time.

Do you have to hide your face at the tailgate parties, or do you just do like I do and tailgate with Griz fans who understand the strengths and weaknesses of our program?

My tailgating consists of a Miller Lite in one hand, and a football in the other playing catch with my son. That's about the extent of it.........

I tend to ignore talking football with people at the tailgates, as it's about as naive as this board........

LOL, you got that right! I'm offered plenty of grape Kool-Aid at the tailgates, but I prefer a good IPA.

As always these polls are virtually meaningless at this time of year. Injuries or suspensions can derail a season before they even start. First off we killed EWU and UND so I have a hard time believing they are better than us. But then again PSU handled us and they are ranked lower. If we can have a fast start and beat another top 5 team early, gain some confidence and consistency, I anticipate the Griz being top 5 by the end of the season. We are young though especially on defense. We need our OL, DL and special teams to improve and we need to have an effective running game to make it happen.

It's a sad day in Grizland when the University of North Dakota is ranked higher than we are, even in the pre-season! Hell, or 3rd string QB, who is now a WR, set an all-time record with 7 TD passes against them last year! They lose 11 starters from that team, and yet are ranked higher than us? WTF!

As self righteous as you are about football knowledge, I'm suprised you don't know it was six touchdowns. It put him in the record books matching Dickenson, Ah Yat, & Johnson. High company

Also, conspicuously absent are the defending Big Sky champs SUU. Hmmm weird. Let's drop them in at 25 for tits and jiggles eh?

It's not a poll. It's a top 25 ranking according to Craig Haley.
SUU lost their amazing QB, defense, and HC Ed Lamb(to BYU).
They'll be breaking in a new HC, QB and defense. But, they aren't Montana.

There is a difference in knowledge and trivia. I'll stick to knowledge and leave the trivia to..... well, you know who. :thumb:

Hum, is it just me or does it seem EWU is over-rated? Same QBs as last year, same crappy defense. They have the best receiver ever I will grant them that, but they had him last year too and went 6-5.
So my question is what do people see in EWU that makes them so potentially good?

Last year Eastern completely switched defenses, had a new D coordinator and started a ton of freshman. All the kids will now have had a year in the system....similar to the Griz offense, you expect it to be better after the complete shift in the first year, you'd expect the same with Easterns D.

As far as offense. Jordan West will most likely not be the starter, or even the backup this year. Eastern was put in a tough spot last year. Adams announced he was leaving after winter condo and after the signing period so it left Eastern with few options. This year they have been able to develop their two soph's, who saw limited action last year, even though Hennessey started a game or two last year, he will be completely different this year. Shaq Hill was also granted a red shirt for missing last year and will help immensely if he can return to his 2013/2014 days.

Just my 2 cents...

Haley has tweeted a couple of links to Athlon predictions for conference winners and @large bids. They have EWU winning the BSC, with Montana, UND, & PSU all in the tournament. Somebody must think things are going to be fine over there.
