Does the UND Lady Sioux automatically push the Lady Griz off the podium as the power team in the conference? They have won 3 national Championships at the D-II level. Does 3 lower level National Championships translate into more prestige than a perennial upper division post-season participant that realistically had no chance to win a National Championship?
That may all be well and good. North Dakota did supply a couple recruits in RSelvig's early years; such names as Julie Eckmann & Anita Novak come to mind; and Joy Anderson from Minnesota. All excellent players. Strange that RSelvig didn't pursue that area more heavily in subsequent years since such areas have developed many good players that could've been recruited by U0fM IMHO. My thoughts on that may not be totally accurate but 'seemingly,' it has appeared that most funds supplied from the UofM Athletic Dept. over the past decade or two has gone to football recuiting primarily. A type of hierarchy so to speak that says football first, then men's basketball, if that, then the rest, etc. Needless to say it has also 'seemed' that of thirty prospective recruits culled for football purposes, perhaps one gets signed and then of thirty signed less than ten are around by the time they're seniors; but I guess that's how that goes. The primary 'cash cow' has been football and one needs to feed it evidently, otherwise...I mean, what renovations to any sports facilites has been augmented the most?..Washington-Griz Stadium from just over 15,000 seating capacity, if that, in the mid-eighties, to now 25,000? All duly appreciated, granted, this including the playing surface which is something to be proud of, really. Or the Dahlberg Arena that had a renovation as well but dropped the seating capacity from nearly over 9,000 to now just about 7,200? Granted, also a new flooring for the basketball court which was like fifteen to twenty years overdue.
But, as always, the teams will have to put it on the court and let it be determined there. All past accomplishments are good for 'Press Media Guides' and the record books but can hardly be relied on in present and future endeavors.
This Forum allows everyone to be an expert. Subsequently most have overlooked the coaching ability of RSelvig over the years with the limited resources provided that if akin to the football program very well could have been a possible contender in the post season arena even past the Shannon Cate years. It all depends on where you place your emphasis with the resources available. Either this or that. Seemingly.
