Lord Vigo said:I don't blame any Griz fan who doesn't want to root for the Cats, or vice versa. But I am perpetually confused by fans of either team who seem to honestly believe that the other's fanbase is completely composed of horrible people.
I know or have met a good number of Montanans on either side. There are a few jerks in both fan bases, and the rest are pretty solid people. I have great friends who are hardcore UM fans. I have seen Cat fans in Bozeman acting like total idiots.
On either side, they're just people. Which is to say, a mixed bag.
The only dynamic I can really identify is the streak hangover. Some UM fans have an arrogant streak coming out of them, and some MSU fans have little man's disease. But that doesn't have anything to do with the overall quality of people; it's the circumstances they were placed in during that era of the rivalry.

The one thing I see in this rivalry that's different from any other is the streak. 17 years without a win & victory snatched a couple times along the way. It gets in your head. Gentlemen, I was in school living on the same dorm floor as many of the Cat players who went from worst to first...to worst in 1983 -85. The streak started shortly thereafter. Lord I've seen fire & I've seen rain. It's been 20 years since ithe streak ended - but I didn't relax during Cat/Griz this year until midway through the 3rd quarter - 38 - 7 because I've done it before & it bit me in the ass.
The losing wasn't the only issue though, Griz fans bashing Cats got out of hand. Some was great humor, some not so much. For me and many others though it was Bobby who lead to the loathing you see from Cat fans today. Read some of his quotes about the Cats and ask yourself what you'd think of Vigen or Choate if they said the things Bobby did? He's a snarly son of a bitch when it comes to the Cats & it's not necessary. So Cat fans as a group don't like Bobby, but I can assure you Cat fans are rooting for Bobby to remain head coach! We finally get to punch back, beat the Griz, and move deep in the playoffs. This may be the year Cats win it all - we'll see soon. You don't know how good it feels to be here - you didn't suffer for 17.
If Cat fans are learning how to win & enjoying the 6 year run the team's on good for us. Little brothers grow up & the ones I know who got the crap beat out of them become tough as nails world beaters. Big brother - you reap what you sow so to speak. For me, when I see an entire stadium screaming ESG-GCG it makes me laugh out loud knowing how far the program has come & how starved its fan base was. Winning is fun & we're reveling in it. Losing sucks. Don't let it get into your head, it won't last forever. I can attest to it.

I am from the 60s, when the Griz never won. I was born and raised in Bobcat country, and during that long drought from the 60s until Don Read pulled us out the abyss in the mid-90s, I can assure you there was not one single Bobcat-rooting friend/acquaintance of mine who ever said one decent thing to me about UM or the Griz. They made fun of us for even attending UM, much less being Griz athletic fans. I am a third-generation UM attendee, and damned proud of it.
Just this morning, a Bobcat supporting friend came up to me, with a shit-eating grin on her face, with the comment: 'Bet I had a better weekend than you!' I knew exactly what she meant, but the friend with me asked what she was talking about; I told her it was football, and she was, like, "So?" I explained that the Cats had won, but UM was no longer in the playoffs. The friend's response was, "Well, that was nasty." I just said that was a Bobcat fan. There is nothing on earth that would ever get me to cheer for an MSU football team.

I mean thay sounds like some good natured ribbing. I love the back and forth as long as it's done nicely. I've had some great back and forth with random strangers over Cat/griz.
I remember shirts when the streak was at 16 that had a grizzly bending over a Bobcat and referencing that 16 was the age of consent. I'll take someone teasing me about my team affiliation over that any day.
